PADS Before you Panic! - A Simple Check Could Save You Thousands 💡🐾

What happens when your dog suddenly starts limping or holding their leg off the ground? Do you panic and get into the vet ASAP? Or leave it a couple of days to see if it settles down?

It’s always hard to not let our protective instincts take over and panic when our beloved fur kids are injured and holding their legs off the ground. We feel that an urgent trip to the vet is the best course of action to make them feel better and get to the cause of the injury.

Before you head off to the clinic or emergency room (especially when these things always happen after hours! 🤦‍♂️), try this quick and easy check - it could save you thousands of dollars and even unnecessary surgery!

👉 Check their FEET first! You’d be amazed how many times I’ve had clients fearing the worst - like a torn cruciate ligament or a broken bone - only to find something much simpler, like a cut, split toenail, or bruised toe.

Here’s a simple checklist you can follow:

1. Examine their paw pads for any cuts, debris, or anything stuck like glass or gravel.
2. Check the nails for split toenail or infection where the nails come out of the toe (nail bed) by squeezing gently around the end of the toe.
3. Spread the toes apart and check the webbing (skin holding the toes together) between the toes for any cuts or bleeding.
4. Squeeze the toes: if there’s any pain from an injury around the pads where the hair stops and the pads start.
5. Move each toe forwards and back to make sure there is no pain when moving the toe joints.

If any of these tests cause them to pull their foot away. Move on to another toe and make sure they are not just sensitive with you touching their feet, and then go back to the suspect toe and see if they react again.

If they REACT to any of these checks, you might be dealing with a toe injury - and that’s GOOD NEWS! These type of injuries usually heal quickly with a little rest and care.

What to do if it’s a cut or toe nail injury?
1. Dress and clean any wounds and keep it clean from dirt or debris.
2. Rest your dog - avoid jumping up or down (as this puts a lot of pressure on their toes).
3. Avoid fast past paced exercise like dog park or free running.
4. Keep walks short and on-leash until they’re better.
5. After a few days, check the area again to see if the sensitivity has gone.

💡 PRO TIP: If you do end up going to the vet, make sure they check the TOES!

You would be surprised how often I’ve have seen limping dogs get booked in for CRUCIATE LIGAMENT SURGERY when it turned out to be an INJURED TOE 🤷🏻😱

I hope this will help other dog parents save time, money, and unnecessary worry! 🐕💚
