Unexpected oral tumour! 🐶

Rommy came in for a routine castrate at 10 months old, with no history or concerns for anything else!

After he was anaesthetised we noticed a mass in his mouth, 2 of his incisors were removed as the roots were eroding and he was booked in for weekly rechecks.

He was then booked in for a biopsy of the mass as it continued to grow and we awaited the results. Unfortunately they came back as cancerous, and he was booked in for a resection.

He had the mass, a couple more teeth and some of his jaw removed to ensure the entire mass was gone.
He recovered very well, looks great and is now going wonderful!

So just a reminder to check your pets all over every now and then incase any abnormalities pop up! It’s great to start teaching puppies and kittens to have their mouth, ears and paws handled from a young age so they can get used to these things 😊

Hip Dysplasia! 🐶

Hip dysplasia is a genetic disease of the hips that occurs during growth. It affects mainly larger breed dogs, such as German Shepherds and Great Danes. There are some factors that can affect it, such as diet, exercise, growth rate, muscle mass and environment.

The hip joint is a ball and socket joint, during growth, both the ball and the socket in the pelvis must grow at equal rates. With hip dysplasia, this equal growth during puppyhood doesn’t happen and the result is looseness of the joint. This can then lead to degenerative joint disease or osteoarthritis.

Symptoms can be painful in the back legs and hips, lameness, reluctant to stand up or exercise intolerance.
To diagnose hip dysplasia it is done by a simple x-ray.
Although there is no cure for hip dysplasia, symptoms can be managed and if caught early there are many options so your dog can live a full and comfortable life.

In the following radiographs you can see the first 2 dogs have hip dysplasia. The first dog is a milder case and is worse on the left side, the second dog is a more extreme case. The third dog has normal and healthy hips.
You can see the difference where the ‘ball’ and ‘socket’ fit perfectly together in the third dogs radiographs, compared to the other two radiographs where the ‘ball’ is sitting away from the ‘socket’.

If you would like to know more or are worried about your dog being uncomfortable or sore, especially coming into Winter, please call the clinic on 63604553 😊

Senior Pets! 🐶

Yearly health checks for our senior pets is crucial to keep them feeling their best and keep on top of any unexpected health issues they could develop.

As they get older things such as their eyes, teeth and joints can deteriorate, they can develop lumps and bumps that may need checking. Their heart and kidneys can also start not working as well as they once did and may need checking.

If you’d like to call and discuss or book in your pet for a senior health check, please call the clinic on 63604553 😊

Charlie having some snuggles after his desexing. This little man is definitely a favourite here! 🥰

Desexing is an important procedure that can provide many benefits!
Some of these include, significantly reducing the risk of your female dog developing mammary or ovarian cancers, as well as eliminating the chance of them developing a pyometra and avoiding unwanted pregnancies.

For male dogs it can significantly reduce the risk of testicular cancer and prostate diseases, as well as avoiding unwanted urinating.

Desexing has many befits for cats as well, including stopping unexpected pregnancies, reducing the risk of straying or wondering and greatly reducing spraying or marking.

If you need to discuss desexing or wish to book your pet in, please contact the clinic on 63604553 Monday - Friday, 8.30am - 6pm 😊

Meet Legs! 🐶

This gorgeous Great Dane came into our care for a routine spey and a potentially life saving gastropexy ❤️

These deep chested large breed dogs are predisposed to developing gastric dilation and volvulus or GDV.
A life threatening disorder with which the stomach will fill with gas and bloat, it can then progress and the stomach will twist on itself, causing it become blocked. At this stage of the disorder it is life threatening and most dogs will unfortunately die without surgical intervention.

A gastropexy can easily be done at the time of desexing, it involves attaching part of the stomach to the abdominal wall, which stops the stomach from being able to twist.

Legs is happy and comfortable recovering at home and her owners can now have some peace of mind knowing if something does happen to her later in life and her stomach bloats, it will not be able twist 😊

We hope our wonderful clients had a lovely Christmas and are enjoying the holidays! ✨

With New Year’s Eve right around the corner, please be mindful that whilst we love lighting up the sky, our furry friends might not share the same enthusiasm. Keep them safe by ensuring they can’t escape from home, keep pets indoors where possible and consider a cozy hideaway spot away from the fire works 🐾

Just a friendly reminder, we will be closed for the upcoming long weekend so any medications or food will need to be picked up by tomorrow afternoon! 💊

TICKS!!
The holidays are here and with that means tick season is well on its way!

If you are travelling for the holidays please make sure your pets are up to date with paralysis tick prevention.
A simple chew or spot on for prevention is much better than attempting to cure!

Brands such as bravecto, nexguard or simparica are best for protecting your loved pets and need to be given 2-3 days before leaving for holidays.

Ticks cause paralysis that mostly begin in the back legs, causing them to wobble and fall. It will then worsen to an inability to stand, and they can begin to struggle to breath, cough, gag, drool and vomit. If left untreated it is deadly.

Meet Ruby, who came home from a holiday and presented to our clinic struggling to walk and dragging her back legs. The nasty tick was found and carefully removed, she was given antiserum, as well as other medications and fluids. She stayed in hospital with us getting round the clock care and monitoring. Luckily she made a slow recovery and soon went home to her family 🥰

If you plan to travel with your pets, treat them with a tick prevention before leaving, search them daily for possible ticks and keep an eye out for any symptoms. If you find a tick or notice symptoms contact your nearest vet ASAP.

If you need to order or would like to pick up any parasite prevention, please call the clinic on 63604553

Snake Bites! 🐍

The warmer weather has arrived and with that means, so have the snakes!!

The past couple of weeks alone, we have had several calls regarding potential snake bites and we have not even reached peak snake season!

It is important to keep an eye out for any symptoms as often the snake bite is not visible.

Symptoms to watch out for include:
- Tremors
- Vomiting
- Weakness
- Lethargy
- Paralysis

If you suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake:
- Keep your pet as calm and still as possible
- Bring the pet into the clinic immediately- even if it’s just suspected
- Call us on 6360 4553 to prepare for your arrival

If the snake is dead and it is safe to do so, bring the snake along so we can identify the correct breed and distribute the most appropriate anti-venom

Happy vet nurse day to all our wonderful nurses and trainees! 🥰

This day is to thank them for all the hard work they put in day after day.
To thank them for the exceptional care and love they give every single patient like they were their own 🐶
To appreciate the compassion and courtesy they give every client.
We are constantly studying and learning to try and improve our skills to give the best care possible ❤️

‘To do what no body else will do, in a way no body else can, in spite of all we go through; is to be a nurse’ - vet nursing means giving a whole lot and not necessarily getting much in return. We keep going because we care 🥰

Ears!!

Do you own a poodle or ‘oodle’mix? 🐩

We have been having huge issues with ear mites and ear infections lately!

Dogs with hairy ears or large floppy are especially susceptible.

If you notice head shaking, scratching at their ears, rubbing their ears on the ground or crying and behaving uncomfortable when touched around the ears call to book an appointment ASAP. As it can be very painful and cause long term issues if not resolved.

The ears can be red, swollen, painful, have a smell or discharge like this one pictured.

It is also good to start training your puppies young to get used to having their ears plucked and cleaned, especially if you have an ‘Oodle’ as this can make life so much easier as they get older to manage those hairy ears!

Call the clinic between 8.30am - 6pm Monday - Friday to discuss options if you’re concerned about your dogs ears 😊

NEWS FLASH! 🙌

Unfortunately, we are currently seeing outbreaks of both parvovirus and kennel cough in the area 🦠
Please ensure your dogs vaccinations are up to date, to keep your pet happy and healthy 💉
If you’re not sure of their current vaccination status, give our receptionist a call and she can update you.
Also note that all puppies need their 1st vaccination at 6-8 weeks old, followed by 2 more vaccinations a month apart. They should be quarantined until at least 1 week after their last puppy vaccination 🐶

The main symptom of kennel cough is a harsh, dry persistent cough. Depending on their vaccination status, some dogs can also get quite unwell and have a nasal discharge. Brachycephalic breeds (pugs, frenchies, bull dogs, etc) are at particular risk of complications, including pneumonia.
So contact us immediately if your dog is showing any of these symptoms.

Symptoms of parvovirus include bloody diarrhoea, vomiting, collapse, lethargy and a high temperature. If your dog exhibits any of these symptoms, contact us immediately as tragically, parvovirus is a fatal disease of left untreated 😖

If you have any questions, feel free to call us on 63604553 😊

A second CHANCE at life

Meet Chance 🐾

A big favourite here at the clinic.
We all remember the day chance’s owner walked into the clinic in a panic at the end of last year.
His dog was acting strange and something was wrong.

Upon first observation chance looked like any normal dog but Half way through a staff meeting later that day, Chance seizured right in front of us all.
We managed to stabilise Chance & with heavy sedation on board we were able to keep him stable for a few days.

We can’t count on our hands how many treatments & diagnostic tests our vets conducted.
It was incredibly touch and go.
We prepared chances family for the worst and continued care.

Finally our Vets Diagnosed Chance with epilepsy.
Epilepsy effects 1 in 20 dogs and is the most common neurological disorder found in dogs who suffer from seizures.

Chance was eventually sent home loaded with medication and we continued close constant contact with his family and frequent clinic visits to assess his progress.

Fast forward to today.
If you met Chance in the street you would have absolutely no idea the ordeal this gorgeous kelpie has been through.
He is a happy, healthy and active young kelpie with a bright future ahead 🌞

Although Chance will be on life long medication to help treat his condition, he has beaten the odds and we are so incredibly proud of him and the dedication his beautiful family has shown him is amazing ❤️

There’s a reason we all chose this industry & dogs like Chance make it all worthwhile 🐾

A big thank you to Sally & Scott - our fabulous Vets who didn’t give up once, researched and worked so hard to ensure this pupper could live a long and happy life 🙌🙌
