Liz and I had a fantastic weekend at Stonewall Equestrian on our journey to both becoming EA National Jumping Stewards.
The role of stewards is to be on hand in the warm up arenas, stables and event grounds to help athletes and horses perform to their best within all the rules and regulations.
Thirteen participants, including three from Victoria, with a range of ages and experience as accredited stewards, EA & FEI judges, EA CDs and interested riders attended the Stonewall EA National Jumping Stewards Refresher and Level 1/2 promotion course in May. It was very informative and focused on the globally topical issues of welfare of the horse and fair play amongst all competitors.
The ones interested in promotion to Level One or Level Two are required within 18 months of the theory course to pass practical tasks at events with an FEI Jumping Steward and to pass on-line assessments. The theory course was based on the same generic EA steward course used for Dressage and Eventing and then focused on Jumping rule requirements and the importance of excellent communication skills.
Two very useful Apps for stewards and all competitors are the FEI Jumping Guidelines for Use of Saddlery, Equipment and Dress found on the FEI Rule App under Jumping. Also in the same FEI Rule App, but under Stewards Manuals, is Annex VI Supplement with pictures of correct warm-up obstacles.
Many thanks to Krissy Harris for the use of the venue, the meeting room, the facilities and her very generous support. Many thanks also to JNSW for their on-going financial support for all officials' education.
