The clock is ticking! Our desexing special offer runs out at the end of this month!!

10% off the usual cost of desexing, for pet owners who have their pets spayed or neutered on time. New NSW regulations require dogs to be desexed by 6 months and cats by 4 months. Desexing your pets doesn't just stop unwanted puppies and kittens from being born, it reduces the risk of some cancers and uterine infections. Desexed pets are less likely to roam and get into fights. See the NSW pet registry website for more details https://www.petregistry.olg.nsw.gov.au
For our 10% special offer, first check the note below and then phone for an appointment or book online at https://www.mulberrylanevet.com.au

NOTE : one offer per household, in January 2025, must be desexed before the 6 month (dog) and 4 month (cat) age limits.

Here we go again! The hot weather is due to break tonight with some big storms - likely to be severe around Orange. Its always hard to tell where storms will hit but PLEASE be prepared for possible bad weather tonight and protect your pets and outside
animals.....just in case.
Pets can be terrified by storms so the best place for them to be is inside with you. Keep a TV or music on, to help drown out the noise and provide somewhere for them to hide if necessary. Ensure doors and gates are shut, just in case pets panic and run. Stay safe everyone!

Meet our new vet! We are delighted to introduce Dr Leah Liefting. Leah is a Kiwi who grew up on a dairy farm in New Zealand. Since moving to Australia, she completed her veterinary degree at CSU in Wagga and then did an emergency and critical care internship at Animal Emergency Services in Brisbane. Dr Leah's special interests are emergency and critical care medicine for pets, ultrasonography and feline medicine. She is our cat lady! Leah recently spent a month in the Cook Islands desexing feral cats and dogs. In her spare time she loves crossfit, running and hanging out with her cat Asher. Its great to welcome Dr Leah to the Mulberry Lane team!

Many people enjoy a holiday break over Christmas and New Year, but not people caring for animals! Thank you to the Mulberry Lane team who were "on call" for our clients over the Christmas period. And a very big thank you to the local WIRES carers. These heroes were rescuing and fostering wildlife on Christmas Day and every other day of the year - often unseen and always unpaid. Thank you WIRES volunteers!

Did you know that if you're driving a Ute with a dog in the tray, you are liable to fines of up to $8000 and even inprisonment if that dog is not safe! Every year vets see dogs injured (or worse) falling from Utes. Each state has slightly different legislation, so its worth checking up on the rules, especially if you're travelling interstate.

Our advice is to use a cage on the back of the ute, where the dog can be protected from sun, wind and rain. If a cage isn't possible, use a short swivel tether in the middle of the tray, and keep the rope or chain long enough so that the dog can lie down but not long enough so that the dog can get near the edge. If the dog can peek round the edge of the cab, then that chain is too long! Metal trays can be slippery and burning hot so always provide a rubber mat under the paws. Provide water on long trips and protect your pet from dust when on dirt roads. Talk to us if you need any advice about travelling with your dog.

FIREWORKS - tonight Tuesday 31st at 9.15 North Orange. SHARE THIS POST!

Please take extra care of your pets tonight, as the noise from the New Years Eve fireworks will be heard across Orange. Fireworks can be terrifying for our pets!
Pets will be safest indoors, with somewhere to cosy hide like a crate or small room. Leaving TV or music on can help disguise the outside noise. Being with you is the best reassurance! Enjoy your evening - Happy New Year to you and your pets!

Holiday time? Protect your pets!
Are you planning a holiday? Is your pet going too? Remember that your dog will need protection from ticks if you are travelling this summer. Wet weather means its a bumper year for paralysis ticks. Talk to us about the best protection for your pet, which will need to be started before you go away. On holiday, check your dog for ticks daily, especially in the ears, between the pads and in the "armpits" where ticks love to hide.
If your pets are staying at a kennels or cattery, then they must be vaccinated. We can check if vaccinations are up to date. Ring for advice or to make a booking

Christmas Hazards - this is a long post but please read on....
Most humans LOVE this time of year! However, pets may not be so keen. You can keep them safe by watching out for these hazards.
1. Guests. Pets can get stressed by people they don't know, invading "their" space. Guests do not know your animal's routine and can leave doors or gates open. Visiting children can be noisy or boisterous. Make sure your pet has a safe and quiet place to retreat to if they need it.
2. Christmas tree. Make sure its fixed securely and that lights and electric cords are safely tied away.
3. Leftovers. Human Christmas food is too rich for pets and can lead to upset tummies or even dangerous pancreatitis. Pets should stick to their normal diet, without any ham scraps or leftovers.
4. BBQ Skewers are a disaster waiting to happen when greedy dogs are around. Make sure skewers don't get eaten or accidentally fall on the ground, and don't feed your pet cooked bones which can splinter and cause internal injuries.
5. Sultanas and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. No Christmas cake scraps for dogs please.
6. Chocolate is toxic to dogs - the darker the choc, the more dangerous. No edible treats under the tree - you might find Santa's doggy helper has helped himself. Call us if your dog has eaten chocolate!
7. Lilies. Beautiful Christmas lilies are toxic to cats - the leaves, stamens and the water in the vase too. Best not to have them in the house.
8. Snakes are out and about in summer. Avoid long grass or places where snakes like to feed on mice, like chook pens and barns.
9. Decorations like tinsel and lights are sparkly and appealing to pets but can cause intestinal blockages if eaten.
10. Macadamia nuts. Toxic for dogs, causing vomiting and tremors.

Call us if you have any concerns about your pet's health over the Christmas period

The hot weather rolls on! Might be a good idea to reschedule dog walks for the next few days - the pavements can stay hot even after the sun has gone down. The tray of your ute can get burning hot so please check the temperature before telling your dog to hop up, and give them a rubbermat to stand on. Dogs might like an ice block to lick...you can freeze some snacks into a tub of water and leave them to enjoy licking it out. You'll find more help with pets in hot weather in our website blog https://mulberrylanevet.com.au/Blog
