Golden Oldie Spotlight - โœจ Frankie โœจ

In our first edition of golden oldie spotlight, we introduce to you, Frankie, a 12 year old Pug. He is owned by our beautiful nurse Elle and in the past two years, he has really started to fill his old man shoes ๐Ÿถ
Frankie recently spent the day here with us at OVH, getting pampered as well as having an extensive dental, starting with full mouth X-rays, and ending in full mouth extractions, but don't worry, he copes just fine without teeth. This has meant some changes for how Frankie is fed though, and, to his delight, incorporated more wet food.
During his day trip, blood tests were run to check everythingโ€™s tip-top (heโ€™s fighting fit, bless him!). As his bones are getting old too, arthritis is an increasing challenge, and Frankie routinely gets Zydax injections and 4cyte gel on his food which aids his mobility greatly. Elle also got him a nice & comfy bed and a little old man jacket to keep him warm, because the chilly winter months can challenge pets with arthritis.

It's safe to say Frankie is much loved and living his best Pug life! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿงก

We couldn't capture everyone due to having some vets off on annual leave/maternity leave but enjoy these bright and colourful scrubs! ๐Ÿ‘š๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿงก

Following on from our Osteoarthritis post last week, Cats can also suffer from OA but the signs may be a lot more subtle as they are very good at hiding signs of pain ๐Ÿฆด
They may be hesitant to jump up on the bed/lounge, avoiding or having trouble with stairs, have a general lack of activity, hiding away, vocalising more than usual or showing aggression all of a sudden when being touched or groomed. Nearly 40% of cats will experience OA in their lifetime so if your cat has started showing any unusual behaviour, book a health check with one of our veterinarians today to see how we can help your fur baby feel better ๐Ÿ’Š๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿพ

Did you know dogs can suffer from Osteoarthritis? ๐Ÿฆด
With the colder weather upon us, your dog may be showing unusual signs in their behaviour, such as struggling to chase their favourite toy or lagging behind on walks or struggling to jump up on the bed/couch. OA is unfortunately an incurable joint disease, but there are ways our veterinarians here at OVH can help to ensure your dog has relief and a better quality of life by keeping the pain at bay ๐Ÿ’‰๐Ÿ’Š
Check out the link below which has some helpful information regarding OA and if you think your pet is suffering, we'd love to see you and your animal to see how we can help! ๐Ÿพ

We have had plenty of fur babies through for desexing in recent weeks and our nurses have had their cameras out capturing those cute moments ๐Ÿ“ธ

We know desexing can seem like a daunting process for you and your pet, but Andrew Denman explains in our recent ABC Chat how our process works and what happens once your pet comes through into the treatment room. You can listen here via the link below ๐Ÿพ

Easter is right around the corner and that means chocolates are plentiful, but did you know that it is toxic to our pets? ๐Ÿซ

At best, too much chocolate can cause a tummy upset. At worst, we can see heart irregularities which can become quite serious. If you know or suspect your pet has ingested chocolate, early intervention is key and bringing your pet to us to induce vomiting before symptoms start is ideal, but if your pet becomes unwell and has been a sneaky chocolate thief, symptoms of chocolate toxicity can include:

๐Ÿ”˜ Diarrhoea
๐Ÿ”˜ Vomiting
๐Ÿ”˜ Restlessness and hyperactivity
๐Ÿ”˜ Increased Heart Rate
๐Ÿ”˜ Seizures

If your pet has eaten chocolate, please seek veterinary advice ASAP. Please advise your veterinary team of what type of chocolate has been consumed and how much you suspect has been ingested, this will help us to triage over the phone.

๐Ÿฐ Easter Egg Hunt Tip ๐Ÿฐ
If you are planning an Easter Egg Hunt, then make sure all eggs/chocolates are counted and accounted for at the end of the hunt to avoid any unexpected ingestion of chocolate by a pet at a later date. You could also try using carob eggs instead of chocolate eggs, especially if your dog is better at Easter Egg Hunts than your children and use white chocolate or milk chocolate instead of dark chocolate to ensure eggs are not as toxic - remember, the higher the cocoa %, the more toxic the chocolate is.

14/03/2024

Miss Luna got herself into a bit of pickle when she decided to chew on a thumbtack, resulting in swallowing the pin ๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ˜ฎ After an examination, a radiograph was taken, and it confirmed that she had in fact swallowed it. Due to the size of the pin and where it was situated (in the stomach), we tried a different approach of using an endoscope to see if we could locate it with the camera and then remove it with forceps before going to surgery. Once Luna was anaesthetised, we were able to feed the endoscope down into her stomach and locate the pin. Very carefully Dr Bryce used the endoscope forceps to grab onto the pin and successfully removed it ๐ŸŽ‰ This was excellent news as it meant Luna did not have to go through an invasive surgery to remove it and she was able to go home to her family that very same day, she's one lucky doggo! Great job Dr Bryce โค๏ธ๐Ÿถ
