We have seen a lot of Paralysis Tick cases over the past couple of months and we want you to meet Jessy, one of the lucky ones who after 7 days in hospital with us, made a full recovery and got to go home to his family 💙 After a recent trip away to the coast, Jessy's owners noticed he had developed a cough and was vomiting frothy bile. Upon a closer look, they found a tick attached near his right ear and removed it. When Jessy wasn't able to walk properly, they brought him into the clinic where Dr Bessie assessed him, whilst our nurses conducted a thorough tick search to ensure he had no more ticks attached to him. Tick anti-serum was administered and for the next 7 days, he was closely monitored by Dr Bessie and his nurse Madie, as he made small improvements each day. Tick Paralysis can be prevented by ensuring your pet is up to date with a parasite preventative prior to travelling.
You were a pleasure to look after Jessy, thank you for being the happiest boy 😍🐾🧡💙

🚨 PARVOVIRUS 🚨

We have seen a surge in cases of Parvovirus in the last few weeks, both here in Orange and at our Parkes Vet.
It is a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease which affects the gastrointestinal tract of dogs. It is transmitted through direct or indirect contact with an infected animal’s faeces and the virus can survive in the environment for many years, leaving unvaccinated puppies and adult dogs susceptible to the disease.

SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:
🔘 Refusal to eat or drink
🔘 Vomiting
🔘 Diarrhoea (often bloody)
🔘 Lethargy/Fatigue
🔘 Fever

If your puppy or adult dog is not up to date with their vaccinations and they seem off colour and showing any of these symptoms, we recommend a consult with a veterinarian as soon as possible.

A puppy needs 3 vaccinations at 6, 9 & 12 weeks of age before they are fully vaccinated and should be isolated to their yard until all 3 have been given. A yearly vaccination is then needed to keep up to date as adult dogs can catch the virus if they aren't current.

If your pet isn't current with their vaccinations, you can make an appointment online via the link below or call 6361 8388 and speak to one of our lovely receptionists during opening hours.
Prevention is better than a cure and it is up to you as the pet owner to be vigilant and keep your animal protected against this disease! 👏

What should you do if you see or find an echidna❓🦔
If you see an echidna and it is NOT injured, please leave it alone and DO NOT approach it and do not attempt to contain it. Relocating any healthy echidna risks them losing their scent trail or leaving young unattended in the burrow. The best thing to do in this situation is for everyone to simply leave the area for a period of time, allowing the echidna to make its own way and you will find that the echidna will move away as soon as it is sure it is out of danger, and feels secure.

If you find an injured echidna or collide with one with your car, safely transport them to your closest veterinarian where the necessary steps will be taken to treat the animal.

Golden Oldie Spotlight - ✨ BUDDY ✨

We haven't had a golden oldie post the past couple of months, but this edition brings the introduction of a very special boy 😍
Buddy is a 12-year-old labradoodle who recently spent the day with us in clinic for a dental procedure 🦷 He is the liveliest, and youngest looking 12-year-old dog we've seen. He was the sweetest boy, posing for photos and lapping up the cuddles. 🥰
Buddy had to have 3 teeth removed but he has bounced back and is doing very well, showing off that colgate smile every chance he gets! We loved having you in Buddy and can't wait for the next visit 🧡💙

🚨 ALERT - TICK PARALYSIS 🚨

We have seen an influx of tick paralysis cases in the past week here at OVH.
Paralysis ticks are found on the coast of Australia, they favour humidity and are generally more prevalent during the Spring and Summer months.
Paralysis ticks are dangerous parasites, causing paralysis and even death, harming thousands of dogs and cats in Australia every year. After a paralysis tick attaches, they release a toxin that will paralyse nerves and the respiratory muscles of the animal, which is why it can be fatal.

The symptoms of tick paralysis can include:
🔘 Wobbly legs or collapsing
🔘 Change to your pet's bark or meow
🔘 Changes in breathing/panting
🔘 Retching
🔘 Increased salivation
🔘 Dilated pupils

It is SO IMPORTANT to have your animals on a tick prevention product, especially if you are taking them on holidays with you. Even if the pets aren't travelling out of the area, it is still worth having them on prevention as it is a time of year where we humans are going away on holidays, and we can bring ticks back in our clothes, luggage, camping gear and other objects. We stock preventatives in clinic for both cats & dogs which covers paralysis ticks, as well as other ectoparasites (fleas, mites etc.) so pop in clinic and have a chat with one of our friendly staff to see which would be the best option for your pet. An accurate weight is also important for accurate dosing.

Below is a link for more information on the paralysis tick and an identification chart if you think you may have found one on your pet. https://poi-australia.com.au/east-coast-of-australia.../...

If you think you have found a tick on your pet, please do not remove it as you run the risk of injecting more toxin into the animal if done incorrectly - contact us immediately and we can remove it for you.
