FIREWORK SEASON 💥

Given the time of the year, fireworks are expected, whether they are scheduled or not and we know the negative effect that they can have on our pets 😐
If you know fireworks are scheduled, plan ahead. Keep your animals indoors and put them in a room with a television or radio turned up, or even some calming music. If possible, have a family member stay with them during the fireworks and you could even make yourself comfy in a well-insulated room like a walk-in robe and try to distract them but if they would prefer to be alone, then allow them to be. Make sure all windows are closed, and all exits and gates are secure. If you are concerned about your pet’s firework anxiety, please give us a call at the clinic and we will be able to offer you some helpful advice! 🐾

HEATSTROKE IN OUR PETS 🌡☀️🔥

Given the string of very warm days we are having, we thought some information on heatstroke and how it affects our pets would be beneficial, but a key fact about heatstroke is that it doesn't have to be particularly hot for your pet to suffer from this issue.

WHAT IS IT ❓ Heatstroke is the most severe stage of hyperthermia (abnormally elevated body temperature), occurring once a pet’s core body temperature reaches 41.1 degrees Celsius or higher.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS/SYMPTOMS ❓ In the earlier stages of hyperthermia (heat stress and heat exhaustion), pets will pant and drink more and will begin to show signs of weakness.
They will usually show symptoms such as:
🔘 Heavy panting
🔘 Vomiting and/or diarrhoea
🔘 Changes in gum colour (usually to a darker red or purplish-blue colour)
🔘 Excessive drooling
🔘 Weakness, wobbliness, and lethargy, which can progress to unconsciousness
🔘 Seizures

If you suspect early hyperthermia in your pet (heat stress), it’s recommended to soak them to the skin with cool (not cold) water, place them in front of a fan or in air-conditioning, offer them water to drink, and monitor them closely.

However, if your pet is showing weakness or any other symptoms that could be associated with more severe heat exhaustion or heatstroke, we would strongly advise wetting them down as above, and then driving them (in a cool, air-conditioned vehicle) for an urgent veterinary assessment.

Pets are most prone to heatstroke when they:
🔘 Are left unattended in a vehicle, as internal vehicle temperatures can rise rapidly, even on mild days
🔘 Have inadequate shade, ventilation, or water in warmer weather
🔘 Are exercised on a warm or humid day
🔘 Are a flat-faced or thick-coated breed
🔘 Have a pre-existing airway or heart condition
🔘 Are very old or very young

Keep your pets safe this summer by:
✅ NEVER leaving them in a parked car, not even for a minute
✅ Ensuring your pet has access to plenty of fresh, cool water at all times
✅ Ensuring they have access to shade so they can keep out of the direct sunlight
✅ Limiting outdoor activities by walking dogs early in the morning or late evening when it’s cooler and avoiding hot pavement that can burn their paws

Let’s all work together to keep our beloved pets safe and comfortable this summer 🐾💙🧡

We have seen a lot of Paralysis Tick cases over the past couple of months and we want you to meet Jessy, one of the lucky ones who after 7 days in hospital with us, made a full recovery and got to go home to his family 💙 After a recent trip away to the coast, Jessy's owners noticed he had developed a cough and was vomiting frothy bile. Upon a closer look, they found a tick attached near his right ear and removed it. When Jessy wasn't able to walk properly, they brought him into the clinic where Dr Bessie assessed him, whilst our nurses conducted a thorough tick search to ensure he had no more ticks attached to him. Tick anti-serum was administered and for the next 7 days, he was closely monitored by Dr Bessie and his nurse Madie, as he made small improvements each day. Tick Paralysis can be prevented by ensuring your pet is up to date with a parasite preventative prior to travelling.
You were a pleasure to look after Jessy, thank you for being the happiest boy 😍🐾🧡💙
