On 29 June 2023, a Parliamentary Inquiry was established to investigate and report on pounds across New South Wales, focusing on a range of critical issues.

RSPCA NSW provided a detailed submission and gave evidence before the Committee, based on our extensive experience working with the Office of Local Government, pound facilities across the state, and fulfilling our enforcement obligations under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 (NSW) (POCTAA or the Act).

In our submission, we proposed 13 recommendations, including: urgent review of POCTAA, it’s associated Regulations and Codes of Practice, the development and implementation of mandatory welfare standards for pounds and shelters, increased resourcing for targeted, free desexing programs, outreach initiatives in rural and regional areas, and better support for semi-owners of cats.

We also emphasised the need for modernised council pound facilities, training for staff in animal behaviour and welfare, and addressing veterinary industry shortages to improve access to care and ensure the successful rehoming of companion animals. Following the inquiry the Committee released a report containing 24 recommendations. In advance of the Government's reply, read RSPCA NSW response the recommendations here:

Update: ADOPTED!
🩵Introducing Bud! 🩵
Hello, my name is Bud! I'm a young, energetic little guy with the most handsome medium-length fur. At just shy of 3 months old, I'm looking for my forever home. You'll hardly notice that I'm a kitten because I'm so playful and full of energy! I'd love to live with someone who works regular hours, which would give us plenty of playtime together. I'm trained to be home alone for a while, but I would love if my human had time to play with me, and indulge in a game of 'catch the string' or two. I promise to make you laugh with my antics! I don't have any known issues with kids, so a family with children would be just fine by me. I think we could have a lot of fun together! Plus, I'm good with other cats - I'd love a playmate! Ideally, I'd like to live with someone who has experience with cats. I think it will help me settle in better and quicker. I can't wait to meet you and start our journey together. I promise to keep you entertained, offer you endless purrs, and be the best companion you could ask for.
Love Bud xXx 🩵

🧡Introducing Boo Boo! 🧡
Hello, dear future family, my name is Boo Boo! I'm a charming 3-year-old female Domestic Short Hair cat, looking for a warm home to call my own. I bring the perfect balance of energy and calmness. I'm playful enough to chase a string toy, but also enjoy curling up on a cozy lap for our shared quiet moments. I've got a silky short coat, easy to care for, and perfect for petting. You'll find my independent spirit endearing, but I also love the company of humans. I'm not too demanding, but a little bit of your time, love, and patience will make my day. Don't let my age fool you, I still have plenty of kittenish charm left in me. If you're looking for a faithful friend who can keep you entertained while also appreciating our downtime, I'm your girl. I can't wait to meet you, and hopefully, become a cherished member of your family. Adopt me, and let's create beautiful memories together.🧡

Update: ADOPTED!
💚Introducing Bella! 💚
Hello there, I'm Bella! I'm a 9-month-old female Australian Kelpie looking for a loving home.
I may have a few months under my collar, but I still have all the energy and curiosity of a puppy. I'm always eager to learn about life and would love to have daily opportunities to do so with you! Since I'm still young, I would thrive in a home with someone who works average hours and can dedicate time to my training. I promise to be a quick learner! Plus, I'm pretty sociable with other dogs, so having a furry sibling could be fun, i will need to meet them first to make sure we get along. Even though I'm lively, I do appreciate a quiet and calm household. It helps me relax after a day of exploring and learning. I haven't had much experience with other animals, but I've shown no issues so far. I'm ideal for those aged 12 years and above because I can be a bit unsure in new environments and meeting new people.
With my lovely personality, I'm sure I'll fit right in with your family. Can't wait to meet you and start our journey together!💚
