People need to start taking responsibility with researching breeds before they get one. Talk to trainers or people in rescue before you choose a breed.
Maremmas love their animals and are very loyal to them.
Such a shame many humans are not loyal to their maremmas.
Maremmas are free spirits who love free range and space.
Many people turn them into fat biting/barking blobs.
This photo is DP some time ago with her goat Earl Grey.
We are getting inundated with people basically wanting to dump their maremmas here almost daily.
Why get a maremma if you don't want a guard dog ?
That's what they are.
Almost always at some point in time.
It's even in the name. Livestock Guardian Dog.
If you don't have livestock to guard, in the dogs eyes, you become the livestock.
Laziness creates dog 'rehoming'.
My favourites are the please don't judge.
Trust me, I'm judging.
After 1, 2 or 4 years when your dog won't stop barking because you've never taught it in a way that's meaningful to it, not to bark at nothing, then you want to get rid if it.
That's a you problem, not a problem dog.
When the dog growls, barks at or bites anyone who comes to your house that's a you problem too.
You might like your neighbours, kids, grandkids or visitors but the maremma didn't sign up to protect them. It signed up to protect you.
The dog is doing what it was bred to do.
You have failed in multiple areas.
Firstly getting a maremma.
Secondly not providing a comfortable space where the dog doesn't interact with other people.
Thirdly not training the dog at all and not even understanding its running the show.
Then you want to ditch it for somebody else to fix all the problems you created and pay all its costs.
For life if it can't be successful rehomed.
You want to dump it without even a bag of food let alone ongoing support.
The entitlement is mind blowing.
Like all big dogs, maremmas are potentially very dangerous.
I'll find the photos and post them of a guy near here that was mauled by his mates maremma.
The dog died because the guys were stupid.
It was not a maremma from here.
Get yourselves off the maremma pages which clearly spread so much misinformation and are mostly run by breeders trying to sell you a maremma or at least encourage you to go get one.
If you need to sedate or crate your maremma, you're a problem.
Would you like to be sedated to deaden your instincts or locked in a crate so you can't walk around?
When and why did crating dogs become acceptable?
To all these people who smash me about how much their dogs love their crates, I say great.
Leave the crate door open then and I'm sure the dog will spend all its time in there.
Better still, take the door off so you can't be tempted to close it.
The dog in the crate is a prisoner not a pet.
Its in there so it doesn't get hair on your lounge, or wake you at night or whatever.
Its in there for human reasons not dog reasons.
Interestingly you can all train them to go in a crate for your convenience but you can't seem to train them to do anything else 🤣
Don't start defending crating, I'll delete it !
I'm guessing about 75 percent of people with maremmas shouldn't have them.
Get a Labrador.
