We are excited to announce that the NEW Lepto 2 vaccine has arrived at the clinic!
A vaccine against this disease has been out of stock for some time now and pet parents have had to be extra cautious about where their dogs venture and drink from.
This is considered a CORE vaccine for Dogs in high risk areas and unfortunately the Northern Territory is deemed as a high risk area.

Please call the clinic on 8931 0455 to book your pet in!

☀️🔥☀️🔥HEAT STROKE IN DOGS🔥☀️🔥☀️

Dogs will normally begin experiencing signs or heat exhaustion/stress which can then progress into heat stroke.
Both require veterinary intervention immediately but being aware of early signs and bringing them in before heat exhaustion turns into heat stroke will help your pets outcome.

Signs of heat exhaustion:
▪️Excessive panting
▪️Less responsive
▪️Bright red gums
▪️Weakness
▪️Vomiting

Signs of heat stroke:
▪️All of the above
▪️Collapsed
▪️Extremely slow to respond or unconscious
▪️Siezures
▪️Tremors
▪️Pale, blue gums
▪️May have bruising or spontaneous bleeding under the skin or gums

How to help your pet when they are overheating:
💧Room temperature water not ice
💧Avoid letting them have huge amounts of water as this can lead to bloat and/or aspiration phenomena
💧In the car turn AC on high, windows down
💧Lay them on a wet towel
💧DO NOT use ice or cover them in wet towels

How to avoid pets overheating:
🚫Do not walk pets in the middle of the day
🚫Do not play fetch in the sun or on a super hot day
🚫Do not lock pets in an area without shade
✅Do walk pets during cooler times
✅Do check the weather app and see what times are appropriate to take your pet out (preferably before 8-9am and after 5pm)
✅Before you leave the house ensure your pet has adequate water supply and a shady area to rest in
✅Be aware if your pet has predisposing factors that may lead to heat stroke
▪️ Obese pets
▪️Brachycephalic breeds (bulldogs, pugs)
▪️Dark fur
▪️Dogs who used to live in cooler climates
▪️Dogs with low exercise tolerance

It’s still dental month here at Uni Ave Vets! Going all the way until the end of June.

This is one of our patients from last week, she had a grade 2 dental disease and was recommended a dental clean before it progressed any further. Lucky for her all the teeth were healthy but the gums were severely inflamed.

Dentals should be apart of your dogs preventative health care and if done routinely it can save them from losing teeth in the future due to decay and infection.

Call 8931 0455 to book in for a dental check

Dental month is here!

Did you know that between 70-80% of dogs and cats have dental disease by the age of 2?

Bad breath is one of the first signs of dental disease that pet owners notice. If dental disease goes untreated, plaque and calculus will continue to build up on the tooth surface and begin to make its way underneath the gum line. This build up can lead to infection which will begin to destroy the underlying bone and ligaments holding the teeth in place. As dental disease gets worse this can have an impact on your pet’s health and quality of life.
Signs for when to get your pets teeth checked:

🪥Halitosis (bad breath)

🪥Yellow colouring on tooth surface

🪥Red or bleeding gums

🪥Difficulty eating kibble / dropping food.

🪥Pawing at mouth

🪥Shying away when you touch their muzzle.

May and June we are offering a discount on dental cleanings, discounted nurse dental checks, discounted food, and chews.

Did you know that it is estimated that 50-60% of dogs and cats are overweight or obese and is one of the most common disease states in companion animals ❓

Within this percentage only 10% of owners realise this. Obesity doesn’t just affect the way our pets look, it can also have major impacts on our pets health and day to day activities. Many owners over feed their cats and dogs or give treats such as cheese and ham without knowing the impact it is having on their pets. Obesity can increase the risk for the following:
· Arthritis
· Cardiovascular disease
· Diabetes
· Respiratory disease
· Decreased life expectancy.
· Decreased quality of life.

Keeping your pet at their ideal weight can lead to your pet feeling their happiest and healthiest. The ideal body weight is not based off the number on the scale, it is based on their Body Score Condition as pictured below.

☎️ If you are interested in finding out if your dog is at the correct weight, then call the clinic on 8931 0455 to book in with one of our experienced nurses for a weight consult.

🍫🚫🍫🚫Chocolate Toxicity🚫🍫🚫🍫

A reminder to pet owners this Easter, that while we enjoy our long weekend overindulging in chocolate, our pets are at a higher risk of ending up in the veterinary hospital at this time of year.

Chocolate contains Theobromine and caffeine, which our pets metabolise at a much slower rate than us. Dark chocolate will contain more of these ingredients versus milk and white chocolate, but it does mean that these are still fine for them to eat. Chocolate may also contain high levels of fat and sugar, which can impact on our pets' health causing an upset tummy, vomiting, diarrhoea, pancreatitis and blood glucose / insulin problems.

Easter egg foil wrappings are hazardous too, as they have the potential when eaten to cause tissue trauma and choking, and obstructions in the gastro-intestinal tract.

Some of the early symptoms associated with ingesting chocolate at a toxic level include :
• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Excessive Urination
• Increased thirst
• Hyperactivity
• Racing heart
This may then be followed by :
• Depression
• Tremors
• Seizures
• Abnormal heart rhythms
• Coma

If you suspect your pet has eaten chocolate, it’s important not to panic – try to work out the type and quantity of chocolate eaten, and ring 8931 0455 as soon as possible to speak with a vet for advice.

And to help keep your pets happy and healthy enjoying Easter at home with you, keep pets out of harms way during egg hunts, and Easter eggs out of reach of paws and noses!
