Had my little helper aid in dismantling one of my old saddles.
Whilst cosmetically this old, faithful saddle was a bit battered, the real concern came for the health of the tree..

The tree distributes the weight of the rider effectively over the maximum acceptable surface area of the horse’s back.

Whilst it was very disappointing to be retiring this saddle, I'd much prefer to see that it be turned into a bar stool or a wall ornament, than ever to touch a horses back again.

A timely reminder to have the health of your saddles checked!!

The big news you've been waiting for 🫣🤩

It’s time to share the big news with you all!

Introducing SUMMER HILLS NEW OWNER🥳

As many know, Summer Hill has been a big part of my life, and when my family became the owners of Devonport Saddleworld + Launceston Saddleworld, this is where Summer Hill turned from a young girls hobby, and quickly became the platform known for Saddleworlds Saddle fitting services and then became the go to place when it came to the second hand saddle market.

With my new journey that lies ahead, it was time to let someone else take over the reins of Summer Hill so you can continue to safely sell your second hand saddles and have access to a Saddleworld trained saddle fitter.

So, time to announce who will be taking over these reins!

I introduce to you all, the lovely Tayah from
Tayah Scott Equine Services .

Tayah will be bringing her passion and vast experience in the equine industry to offer her services alongside Saddleworld as both Bit and Saddle Fitter.

Tayah has years of experience starting horses of all disciplines, as well as hosting clinics and instructing state wide. Her eye for detail and skills will sure be an asset in her future, taking over the reins of Summer Hill.

Please know - There is going to be a lot of work going ahead during this transition, so your patience and kindness is appreciated. Anyone with saddles - your process will not be affected.

Keep an eye out for more information over the next few days!

Can we just accept that horses are not perfect and that’s actually ok?

When I was younger phrases such as “can throw a buck”, “gets excited in open spaces” and “doesn’t like to stand still for long” were all pretty common on horse adverts, and they didn’t put the right riders off.

Nobody expected a good horse to be perfect, it was all about what you were willing to compromise on. Sellers were honest as they didn’t feel they had to put an A* horse with a blot free copybook in front of you, backed up by promises such as “safe as houses” or “never puts a foot wrong”.

Nowadays, it seems everyone is expecting perfect. It’s got to be able to school, jump, hack, never have an opinion or so much as jig-jog on the way home. Adverts seem to be becoming increasingly similar and we wonder why everyone is classed as “dishonest” when actually, we might just beexpecting too much.

Horses are living, breathing animals with brains and characters. Some are suited to life in the slow lane, others prefer some more pace. Horses have quirks, some more than others, but we’ve become so un-accepting in our pursuit of “the right horse” that these quirks are often hidden or not disclosed.

If you want something safe as houses for your granny to ride, odds are it’s not going to also be on the cards to qualify for Badminton. If you want a horse that’s capable of taking you round a 1.20 and saving your ass when you miss, it might not love hacking alone, or it might not stand like a rock to clip. If you’re after a schoolmaster, it’s probably not going to sit in your desired age range of “8-12 years old” and if you’re searching for that next potential “top level” on a shoestring budget… stop expecting them to trot out clipped, plaited and ready to go. Get used to looking past mud and fur!

Sellers need to be honest, but so do riders. Be open to compromise. Accept horses are not machines and find a horse with a character that clicks with your own.

Stop expecting every horse to be perfect and accept them for what they are… unique!

Horses need horsemen. It's that simple. I get asked the same questions over and over again and nobody gets it. What level rider is this horse suitable for? I'll tell you, the best one she can get, the best horseman that's willing to buy her. The horse will only ever be as good as the rider. It doesn't matter if it's trained to jump hoops of fire, you're gonna bring it down to your level in no time. Your kid doesn't need a $15,000 horse if they haven't already had $15,000 worth of lessons. You can't buy a violin that will gift you the skill of playing. It's the same for horses. There is no magic horse, only a love for the animal, and a commitment to learning.

Most of you are so unfair and demanding of the horse you miss the forest for the trees. "I want a horse that rides out alone!!" well guess what, you better be ready to spend a year developing that relationship, that bond, that trust, she's not a bike, you can't buy trust.

"I want a horse that can sit and be the same after time off" well friend, this is a commitment to a relationship, not a classic car you take out of the garage twice a year. You can't buy what your looking for.

"I want a horse my kids can ride" you better be ready to teach your kids how to be horseman, because if the horse has to do it, you'll likely see the inside of an ambulance, or a morgue.

You can't buy trust, you cannot buy what comes with building a relationship with an animal over years of dedication.

Having a correctly fitted bit is one of the most valuable tools in your riding. Incorrect fit of a bit can create many behavioural problems for our horses. Eg: head tossing, chomping, inconsistent contact, heaviness and/or evasiveness are just some of the main issues we see often.
Luckily thanks to innovation in bit technology, it doesn't have to be like this.

Located Paloona and regularly service the North/North West Coast, and can travel outside my usual areas for group sessions.

Offering bit fittings, private lessons, horsemanship workshops and clinics.

Get in touch to book in now 😄

Registered PHAA mare
'HER PRETTY KNICKERS"
9yo, 14.3hh

Dot is a nice natured mare who is generally easy to handle. Established basic education under saddle. Forward moving, but not hot. Attended many outings and is good to take out on trail with her low fuss attitude. Doesn't get buddy sour and is happy to be paddocked and/or ridden alone, or in the company of other horses.

She has no vices or dirt, but would do best with a kind, competent human who will work with her to continue to bring out her best.

No nervous or beginner riders

Located Devonport area

Sold pending payment

Registered AQHA, 11yo, 15hh QH gelding.

Has previously had some education in the western field. In recent years has attended rally days @ Pony club, games and private lessons, and generally used as a bomb around horse.

Generally easy to handle. No vices and established basic education under saddle. Lovely yield to leg and works in frame.
Happy to plod on a loose rein.

Is a great doer, currently barefoot and in work.

$9500 negotiable

Tally S Just Got Hotter
9yo, 15.1hh registered AQHA Mare

This talented mare is offered for sale and will only be going to the perfect home.

Shown extensively as a junior horse, and in recent years has attended Extreme Cowboy Races, Reining clinics, and western performance shows, and is always commented on for her exceptional movement and look.

Has had many outings alone and in company, and is just as happy in the show ring as out in the bush on a trail ride.

Although pleasure bred, i feel she'd excel in any western performance field, as she is happy to extend out, and has exceptional leg action.

She would be an asset to any performance home or breeding program.

Please no beginners or nervous persons. She is a mare who I feel will only work best for a confident, capable rider with experience riding a horse with buttons.

Only offered for sale, as I've had to be realistic with what time I have available now with a toddler, and another baby on the way, and she genuinely is wasted being a pretty paddock ornament 😅

How to train a horse to bolt:

1- regularly lead him with a tight grip, especially on the same side. Resistance to the lead rope on a regular basis will make him feel both confined and worried, and also learn to use it for leverage to seek escape.

2- drive while the hand or lead line or lunge line is closed. This will ensure the horse goes forward into a block, and is forced to go up and away. It’s a very effective way to confuse a horse and bring up the fight or flight in him, and if you’re very effective, he’ll leave in a hurry

3- expose him to something he wasn’t prepared for, or ask him to do something from a place of mental worry, without giving him the skills to understand or accomplish it. Continue applying pressure, or not alleviating it, for best bolting effect.

4- work around or near folks who are not guiding their horse well, with horses who are disregulated. This will give your horse a worried energy to feed off of, and help create energy building to a bolt. Choosing not to support your horse but fighting his energy just to get along with the group will really seal the deal.

5- regularly be unaware of your own energy, your own handling of your tools and have conflicting aids between leg, seat and rein.

It’s not that hard to teach a horse to bolt, any body can do it ! Just follow a few simple steps and you’ll be well on your way to a confirmed bolter- with practice, they can choose it as their default behavior, and you won’t even have to try to create it. Practice makes perfect!

Feels so good to be back in the saddle. I'm sure one more day of rest is what the doctor recommended... but how could I waste such a beautiful day 🌞

29/08/2023

I'm writing this post to let everyone know that I've been very unwell with the flu for the past week. So for anyone that I haven't been prompt in responding to, or have forgotten to reply to at all, please know that I'll get back to you as soon as I'm feeling better ❤️
This bug has really knocked us all around. Nothing worse than a sick 2yo, as well as being under the weather yourself.
I've been pretty much bed ridden the past 36hrs 🫣
And it seems as soon as I feel ok enough to swing a leg over and ride, I'm suffering for it for the rest of the day. So, I'm just taking things slow until I'm 100% again.

I'm lucky to have some really good help around me to ensure everything else runs smoothly, so hopefully just another day or two and I'll be back at it. Trust me, there is nothing I hate more than being cooped up inside!
Thankyou for understanding! 💕
