Little Dom and I ventured out on our own yesterday - all the way to SIEC to compete in the Hawkesbury Dressage Festival. It was a big day out for us both with no support crew or buddies to hang out with but we did it and in our first test got a score of 63% ( wow so proud ) then we had an oopsie in The second test and cantered on the wrong lead which didn’t bode well for us so the marks dropped to 54. We managed a 4th and a 5th place so we were not disgraced

This is my Mantra - basics are the base of success and change of 1% will get great change with time

I read a theory about why so many riders lack a deep command of basics, and it was explained like this---

Correct basics are hard to master because there is an enormous amount of repetition involved, and if someone has tried something hundreds, possibly thousands of times, and still can’t do it, it is easy for the person to conclude that he/she is taking on an impossible challenge.

In his book “Mastery,” George Leonard wrote that on the quest to become good, there will be long stretches of “seeming non-improvement.”

Like watching grass grow, change is happening, but so slowly that it can’t be measured daily, weekly, or even monthly. But at some point, for those who stick with it, “suddenly” they can do things that before they couldn’t do.

The issue is giving up in frustration before putting in those many many many many months of practice.

That is ONE theory. I am sure there are many others, but this one does ring true.

It breaks my heart to write this post because putting it out there makes it real. Duke Kahanamoku and I were planning to compete this week at the national titles for the thoroughbred Sport Horse Association. Sadly my plans have been foiled because Duke has developed glaucoma and is losing his vision… what does that mean for him? It means that he spooks and shies things that should be just normal and his behaviour has become unpredictable and sometimes unsafe. Bright days are his worst enemy -  shadows and ghosts spook him constantly. it’s been hard to realise that my beautiful black horse BBH who I consider to be the equivalent of every girls wardrobe LBD little black dress will now spend his life as mostly a big paddock bludger. He was my dream horse from childhood Hes still divine to look at he still the sweetest Horse, when you are not trying to ride him He’s just scared of the world, Little baby Dom is now my focus and I hope to have a long riding career with him - only Four he’s showing great signs of becoming a very nice dressage horse

Brett has been involved in horses since he was a child but his drive was with boats. Brett has competed in offshore powerboat competitions around the world - Lori likes to say she has traded the boat horsepower for real horsepower

Little Dom Pasqualino has had a big week
On Sunday it was SIEC for Sydney Dressage Comp and our calm Little baby scored Two first 🥇🥇places.
Today he went to Stonewall for familiarisation and he stepped out on the arena took it all so well.
Happily sporting his new rug with name and property logo thanks to Katie Kiernan and Peats Ridge Equestrian Supplies for this great rug and of course finishing touches from The Equine Tailor - including bridle numbers - Dommy loves his rug and he looks the part withLori Luhrmann

Tradition and history are important to us and a new tradition started today with our grandson Oscar proudly displaying the medals awarded to his Great Grandfather, Len ( deceased ) he kept wonderful time in the March and the arm swing was impressive with Brett Luhrmann Lori Luhrmann
