Box Divvy is showing the way in reducing our waste footprint . Aside from using minimal packaging, we will soon give you more options to reduce your plastic use: bamboo toothbrushes, stainless steel clothes pegs, non-plastic dishwashing liquid and tablets, and more.

Whatever plastic we generate, we’ll collect and recycle through RecycleSmart. Over the past month, we have run a trial, collecting 78kg of soft plastics from 6 Hubs in the southern highlands and delivered this to RecycleSmart. If we were to translate this to all 267 Hubs, we would take around 1.2 tonnes of soft plastics per week out of circulation. We have applied for a grant from the EPA to help fund the rollout to all Hubs. More on the trial – and next steps - in 2 weeks’ time.

~ Afghan bread update ~

We spoke with Asad from Kabul Restaurant + Bakery (Kabul Star Bakery), and he sounded tired: the second baker he recently took on is not working out, and he is struggling to keep up with orders.

So, we made the decision to split the order between Kabul Star and The Afghan Traditional Bakery in Auburn Rd.
The ingredients vary slightly: The Afghan Traditional Bakery uses wheat flour, wholemeal flour (50%), folate, thiamine, iodised salt, yeast, baking soda, Ceresoft, water.

You can easily tell the difference by the printing on the bag: Kabul Star uses green printing, and the Afghan Traditional Bakery is using blue printing.
And, as we have received some today, Afghan Traditional Bakery flatbreads are round rather than the 'surfboards' we have been getting from Kabul Star!

**Update - we have been told that Afghan Traditional Bakery should be supplying 'surfboards' rather than rounds. So the bread should look the same regardless of which bakery it comes from.

You may or may not have a preference, but either way members and Hubsters cannot specify which of the 2 bakery's products they’ll receive. It’s a random thing.

They say that '𝑨 𝑷𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝑷𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒂 𝑻𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒔' and going by this update from the Kabul Star Bakery, you can't help but feel all sorts of emotions to see and hear that our Box Divvy community is having such a positive impact on Asad's business 🫶

You can see here that Asad has been busy remodeling his bakery to increase its capacity and he is now ready for some big orders!

If you haven't yet tried the Afghan bread you really must. It is described as a hybrid between Turkish bread and Indian naan, but this description does not do it justice.

It is soft, somewhat fluffy, definitely rustic, moreish, incredibly versatile, and despite the simple ingredients (wheat flour, wholemeal flour, salt, yeast, water) they seem to stay fresh for 3-4 days. You can crisp them up in the oven, heat them in the microwave for a softer result, or even toast them.

You’ll find them under Bakery ➡️ Bread ➡️ Wraps & Flatbread. Two loaves per pack for a combined weight of around 760g for a low price of $4.58.

Vicky, our Cundletown Hubster In the Manning River Times - Box Divvy: saving money and health by 'un-supermarketing' written by Julia Driscoll.

The interview was with Anton van den Berg, co-founder of Box Divvy who had this to say about un-supermarketing, as well as keeping people away from junk food temptations at the end of aisle displays.

At Box Divvy "All our packaged food items mainly come from small suppliers who do not use any emulsifiers and artificial ingredients so that way you sort of stay healthy," Anton says.

They then explained how Box Divvy works with Vicky, shining as a local Hubster at Cundletown in the story.
