Wolfies Dog Training & Rehabilitation

Wolfies Dog Training & Rehabilitation Sharon Hilton first started as a volunteer dog walker and was fortunate to work with many problematic dogs. Sharon is a positive reinforcement trainer.
(1)

Sharon understood that to assist the problematic dogs better, studied a Delta Course. With these qualifications and a passion became Lead Trainer of the behavioural team at Shenton Park Dog Refuge.

10 years of shelter experience with Shenton Park Dog Refuge Sharon led and mentored the training team, staff, volunteers and foster carers. Sharing her knowledge in body language workshops, reactivity/

aggression, dog socialisation, cat and dog meets, impulse control issues, muzzle training, how to train and much more. Areas of her expertise is dog reactivity and aggression and whilst employed at the dogs’ home the task was to help the dogs to learn by changing their association and the goal was to be adopted forever. To assist with this transition from kennel to home writing and implementing ‘behaviour modification program’ templates which assists dogs to learn and progress. Problematic dogs may stem from a number of reasons which is why Puppy socialisation classes are super important. Sharon ran and mentored puppy and reactive classes which were heavily sought after. As Lead Trainer and with the assistance of the training team, priority was dog socialisation which assists the dogs’ ability to cope in a false stressful environment. This helped with their social skills whilst waiting for their forever home. Sharon is now pursuing her own dog training business to continue her passion to help dogs and their owners, particularly rescue dogs. This service is desperately needed to keep dogs in their forever homes as it will help continue their learning on the outside which is very important. This service will provide the owner and their dog a more fulfilled quality of life, and help the owner gain a better understanding of the continuous training that is required for these dogs to succeed in their forever homes is invaluable. This technique strengthens the bond with the owner giving the dog a choice. Like with any habit this needs to be reinforced constantly. Consistency is the key! The owner needs to be committed to training on a daily basis, if this is done the rewards will be immense. Sharon currently lives with her two rescue dogs, Mack and Missy Moo. Both are in continuous training and need daily management. They can be challenging at times and are project dogs for life. They are loved, spoilt and have many quality moments which puts smiles on their faces daily and mine. The business name is dedicated to a shelter dog named Wolfie who helped me rehabilitate many dogs in the refuge by being a decoy dog. He absolutely LOVED dogs and his social skills were amazing! He lived in the moment whilst having the patience to show other dogs how to be a dog. He was at the dog’s home for a long period of time and lived as good a life as a dog can live with restraints of kennel life. Wolfie was in many play groups, walking pairs, group walks and beach outings and dozens of hard dog meet. I can’t remember any dog that he ever gave up on. His signal to me that the dog he was working on was ok was simply this……Wolfie would look at you, then lie down and not budge until you allowed the other dog to approach him. I give thanks to Wolfie every day, you were a great teacher and loved by many, especially me. Unfortunately his life was far too short. RIP fur angel x

Dogs need to be enriched on a daily basis. Working breeds need all 6 enrichements. Below are a few ideas of each. Depending on your dog is how many of the above they need. Please do your pup a service and learn to understand their body language. Dogs end up in shelters through lack of knowledge and understanding.
This will strengthen the bond between you and them and make life easier for both parties.
Go to the aspca website for loads of free info.
Enjoy!

Fabulous body language, and appropriate dog interactions. Jane at the end is a fearful dog and pre-empts what could happen.
Carlos was a perfect dog to choose to Give her a good experience to help to build confidence as he was reading her and acting appropriately the whole time. For you lovely doggie owners out there, please do your dogs justice and invest time in learning dog body language so you are able to intervene when needed to keep all interactions as good as you can. This also builds trust between you and your best friend.

So important to give all dogs mental enrichment toys. Little Sam is so smart. He learnt to use this in seconds. Most working breeds struggle in suburbia. Making sure they have all the stimulant they need at this young age is crucial to whether their future is a happy enriched one or whether they end up at a shelter. Please look at what your dog is trying to tell you at a young age. They can easily go stir crazy.

Cash is in my rehabilitation program. Here you.can see the changes for yourself. From very reactive, lunging forward, stiff body posture high flagging tail to relaxed body posture, smiling and interacting. Seen here generalising with 3 different dogs. Although the first dog Louis was big he was a marsh mellow so Cash shouldn't have felt threatened. Beautiful boy!

From dog aggressive to walking with other dogs. Adding dogs to the group for them to generalise.
Next step is off lead. Baskin has been a work in progress for along time with his owner and has had many great experiences. Dale is learning in his older years. You can teach an old dog new tricks with connsistency and correct timing. This can be fast tracked with myself handling or go at your own pace.
Group packages starting soon.

Louis the Bull Arab is soooo appropriate with all dogs he has been tested with. From dog play to calming dogs down who are aggressive towards him and extremely inappropriate. Look at his body language. He is displacing when needed, increasing distance, look aways and disabling himself. He had great off lead play with little Rusty the Jack russel and let him jump all over him. Anyone who adopts him will be one lucky family. He is K9 Dog Rescue Groups dog of the week. Please share. What a beautiful boy! What an absolute darling.... ❤

Part 3.
Nice interactions with Gypsy and Peanut.
Gypsy and Toby. Was Gypsy comfortable?
Gypsy told Toby off over food and he did listen.
Toby and Liam who was constantly moving away. Was he comfortable?
Nice little run off at the end with the 3 who were happy together.
Behaviour can be quite complex and videoing really allows us to pull it apart and see clearer. Helping owners to be able to do this and stop their dogs reacting is really important to allow the dogs to grow and move forward with more positives than negatives.
This takes time and patience
More footage to come.

Part 2. Group walk. These dogs have been walking together for weeks.
Now introducing controlled play with these two. Gypsy is the social dog of the group and appropriate where needed. Now introducing Liam to Gypsy and showing how different interactions can be. Liam has also let off some steam with Peanut in the video prior. The aim is to eventually have all these dogs interactiong off lead and owners able to see when to step in with their dogs.
Project dogs can be hard to handle but they can learn to play and be appropriate around other dogs once familiar. This must be done with people educated in this area and in a controlled setting.

Saturdays group walk now progressing to off lead play.
Managing different styles can be tricky.
Helping owners to understand their dogs threshold levels, when to intervene, body language etc.
The dogs learnt quickly where their access points were. Peanut and Liam are very similar, high energy and can tip over threshold easily. A bigger yard for them to run it out would have been better but this worked.
If your dog escalates in play I can help you.
Group courses coming soon.

Dogs having so much fun with auntie Jenny
Missy and I had the best time, enjoying friends and nature.
Life is too short and on days like this we have to make the most of them. Dogs really just live for the day which is why they are great teachers.
Look how much fun they have when they see us having fun interacting with them. My message for you all today.
Take some time out away from your phones, emails and just be!

I'm sorry i haven't posted for awhile. I've needed time out. I find today's pace with social media and mobile phones very consuming.
I am an earth sign and need to feel in tune with nature. Every so often I need to take myself away and re-energise. Yesturday was just one of those days. What a beautiful day in our local bushland @ Empire reserve. Here is my little Missy having so much fun with her friends

We all have choices to make. Bella the Dutch Shepherd x is learning quickly that she gets to play and interact with nice dogs when she is polite. Training her learnt component will take time.

Took my two to Kings Park today and payed our respects in advance.
So sad.
And the wars around the world continue. With many more innocent people and animals loosing their lives. 💔
Will we ever learn?

Wolfie mentoring a tug game with his same two friends. ❤😇 Thanks Jen and Liz on the other end of the leash. My did he love life to the full.

Wolfie Playing ball at DRH with some of his mates Chilli and Hubert? Or Nathan? Can't remember that 3rd little man. Maybe someone can help me out? All of these dogs had intensive reactive work. All project dogs. We left the leads on and moved with them keeping the leads as loose as possible. There were a few variables why we did this, though in retrospect we should have just let them off.

Part two of Wolfie helping uncle Lawerence (caretaker at DRH), clear the trees. Such a character.😆😅❤

Today is a celebration of life.
It is 6 years ago today since his passing.
In Memory of a lovely young boy called Wolfie. He brought great joy to many people and helped me rehabilitate so many other dogs along with Mack.
Many dogs owe their sociability to this boy. Such a character! Hope these clips make you smile. ❤😇🤣
Here he's helping uncle Lawerence clear the trees.

Mack joined one of our group walks on Saturday and demonstrated his SOCIAL SKILLS ARE BACK!! Meaning, he can make the right choices himself instead of being prompted or having to move away. It made me so happy.

He spent the start of the walk by choosing to be in the thick of it and loving it..❤
Mack is back!

Unfortunately Mack spent way too long in the shelter and became institutionalised. (As many of you know). He isn't the first and won't be the last to have a long length of stay however keeping up with current practices around the world and implementing them is the key. I chose to take him and knew the ramifications.

A Saturday mornings work. Two lovely group walks, private consult with Tonka who finally got to meet a dog after weeks of training, and Puppy Blue training recall back from people and dogs as she is inappropriate when she gets there. A nice reward in the end of appropriate play. Great day!

This has been a very humbling experience for me. Thankyou!

Peanut and Liam sharing a stick. This can be a high resource to some dogs. In this video is this ok? There is more going on than the stick. Spot the freeze. Peanuts dad was on the ball.

Peanut having a ball on the reactive group walk. Guess you could say her friends are now comfortable with lots of movements especially from Peanut. All dogs calm and relaxed. Her friend ex drh dog Liam hung around from tips.

Happy 58th Wedding aniversary to my folks today.
We celebrated at Perth Zoo yesterday. Lovely day!!!
It's always bitter sweet to see animals in captivity but great to know we are getting better with much better enclosures, enrichment, and education.
