Just like us, our pets also need to see the dentist for a range of different problems.

In this pup's case, his lower right canine had an enamel defect with exposed dentin and a rough surface that was close to his gum line. If left untreated, this could allow increased plaque retention and focal gingivitis. Dr Kevin Ng, our specialist dentist, treated the defect with a composite restoration.

Slide 1: Shows the lower right canine tooth with the enamel defect (orange arrow)

Slide 2: Dr Kevin using a Gingival Retraction Cord to pull back the gum to expose more of the enamel fracture before restoration.

Slide 3: A thin layer of composite was placed on the enamel and a Mylar Strip was used to pre-shape the composite before curing with a UV light.

Slide 4: Final shaping of the restoration was performed with diamond disks. This makes the restoration as smooth as possible.

Slide 5: Post restoration, we use a different colour from the tooth as this allows owners to monitor and visibly see the restoration at home.

Slide 6: A happy man at his recheck 2 weeks later!

Follow up radiographs are required the following year to monitor the vitality of the treated tooth to make sure Dr Kevin's treatment has been successful!

CT is an amazing modality for imaging a huge range of conditions, but how do you know whether it is right for your pet? Is MRI or ultrasound or radiography better? These are expensive and sometimes invasive tests that we want to be certain are right to answer the question at hand. One incredibly important job of a radiologist (specialist in veterinary diagnostic imaging) is determining which test is best for your pet. Animalius has 4 wonderful radiologists who talk with vets every day to help navigate the complex world of advanced imaging. Where appropriate, we offer outpatient CT and MRI with specialist anaesthesia support, a full time experienced radiographer and appointments available every weekday.

At Animalius, we deeply care about all of our patients, and we tailor each visit to meet their individual needs. While we’ve showcased our specially designed cat area, we also understand that many of our dog patients can feel anxious or fearful. So, how do we make sure they feel as comfortable as possible?

From the moment you arrive, our friendly client services team ensures that more timid dogs are escorted to one of our larger consultation rooms, where they don’t have to cross paths with others in the waiting area. This gives them a quiet, open space to relax with their pet parents. If your dog would prefer to stay outdoors, you’re also welcome to wait in our enclosed grassed area or even stay in your car if that’s where your pet feels safest.

Our consultation rooms are thoughtfully designed with minimal furniture to avoid creating any tight corners that might make a dog feel trapped. Bright, natural light and pet-safe plants help create a calm and inviting atmosphere that encourages curiosity and comfort.

We prioritize using gentle, low-stress handling techniques to make sure your dog feels as at ease as possible. During your pet's time with us, our compassionate nurses are there to assist and keep your pet comfortable with their calm, caring approach.

In addition, we strongly advocate for the use of anxiety-reducing medications prior to visits. These can help your pet manage their stress and allow for a more positive experience, ultimately reinforcing that trips to the vet don’t have to be frightening. If you think that your pet could benefit from these medications prior to vet-visits, reach out to your regular veterinarian to enquire.

When walking our dogs in the summer, it's important that we keep their safety and comfort prioritised. Hot pavement can burn their paws, so test the ground with your hand before heading out, or opt for early morning or late evening walks when surfaces are cooler. Bring water along to keep them hydrated, and keep an eye out for signs of overheating, like heavy panting or drooling. Dogs are more prone to heatstroke since they don’t cool down as easily as we do, and short nosed dogs are especially susceptible. Choose shady paths and take frequent breaks to help your pup stay cool and happy!

Warning: blood. This little cat presented to our Internal Medicine department to investigate the cause of a chronic cough and sneeze. CT of her head was normal but on rhinoscopy a huge grass awn and several grass seed fragments were retrieved from her nasal passage, to the delight of the whole team. We hope that this provides a great outcome for this patient, as well as being a reminder that grass seeds and grass awns commonly lodge and migrate all over cats' and dogs’ bodies. Make sure to keep a close eye when letting them loose during grass seed season in Perth!
