Animalius is dedicated to advancing animal welfare through ongoing research and publications. Dr Patricia Thong, our 3rd-year Radiology Resident, recently published a paper exploring a rare complication of an intracranial abscess secondary to a periorbital abscess in a Golden Retriever. Fellow Animalians Dr Guy Wolfenden, Dr Dazlyn Badsha and Dr Zoe Lenard were co-authors. Raising awareness of rare but serious conditions like this one helps inform and support other practitioners. https://bvajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/vrc2.923 "

This sweet gentleman needed echocardiogram and ECG to evaluate a cardiac arrhythmia. Cardiovascular disease affects about 2-3% of rabbits so while it is not common, it is important to remember this can be a cause of illness in our bunny patients.

Ollie is a 7 year old Airedale who presented to Dr Kevin with a severe, 10mm focal gingival (gum) recession over his left upper canine tooth (204). His parents wanted to save the tooth rather than extracting it. Kevin performed a left infra-orbital nerve block to reduce pain and the need for deeper anaesthesia, then carefully marked out the margins of a sliding pedicle flap to cover the exposed root surface. This re-establishes a healthy band of gingiva over the tooth. After 3 months, we are happy to say that the lateral sliding pedicle flap was a success, with excellent healing and normal probing depths.

Animalius is a business founded by women, in a profession that is overwhelmingly represented by women in all areas other than business ownership. We are so proud to employ an extraordinary group of women in every part of our team, and work hard to create a workplace where they can thrive. There are many phenomenal women out there striving to do the same. Be sure to celebrate them today, and be thankful for them every day!

Animalius surgeons Dr Caitlin Tzounos and Dr Pippa Williams are off to a flying start! Here they are pictured with resident Dr Jacelyn Neo and intern Dr Melissa Eldridge performing an emergency surgery to remove a gallstone from a dog with an obstructed bile duct and operating to remove a mass from a dog's middle ear. We are so excited to welcome Dr Pippa and Dr Caitlin to our team here at Animalius, and they look forward to working with our fellow veterinarians, clients and pets!

Animalius turns 5 this week! We opened our doors in February 2020 with 12 staff, just as the whole world changed. Amid the challenges of COVID, the veterinary community embraced us, and we've since grown to 60+ extraordinary team members, helping over 20,000 patients. Our core belief is that vets deserve to be better supported to care for their patients, and our mission is to transform the veterinary profession. Just like us, our pets also need to see the dentist for a range of different problems.

In this pup's case, his lower right canine had an enamel defect with exposed dentin and a rough surface that was close to his gum line. If left untreated, this could allow increased plaque retention and focal gingivitis. Dr Kevin Ng, our specialist dentist, treated the defect with a composite restoration.

Slide 1: Shows the lower right canine tooth with the enamel defect (orange arrow)

Slide 2: Dr Kevin using a Gingival Retraction Cord to pull back the gum to expose more of the enamel fracture before restoration.

Slide 3: A thin layer of composite was placed on the enamel and a Mylar Strip was used to pre-shape the composite before curing with a UV light.

Slide 4: Final shaping of the restoration was performed with diamond disks. This makes the restoration as smooth as possible.

Slide 5: Post restoration, we use a different colour from the tooth as this allows owners to monitor and visibly see the restoration at home.

Slide 6: A happy man at his recheck 2 weeks later!

Follow up radiographs are required the following year to monitor the vitality of the treated tooth to make sure Dr Kevin's treatment has been successful!

CT is an amazing modality for imaging a huge range of conditions, but how do you know whether it is right for your pet? Is MRI or ultrasound or radiography better? These are expensive and sometimes invasive tests that we want to be certain are right to answer the question at hand. One incredibly important job of a radiologist (specialist in veterinary diagnostic imaging) is determining which test is best for your pet. Animalius has 4 wonderful radiologists who talk with vets every day to help navigate the complex world of advanced imaging. Where appropriate, we offer outpatient CT and MRI with specialist anaesthesia support, a full time experienced radiographer and appointments available every weekday.
