Good Reasons for Calling the Rangers

These are the reasons why responsible 'lost and found pet' group admins recommend calling the local rangers when a dog is seen roaming loose and can't be caught:

- The dog may stray further from its home, become frightened and stressed, and be much harder for the owner to find;

- The dog may be hit by a car, or cause a road crash from a driver trying to avoid hitting it;

- The dog may be stolen by an opportunistic thief, or by someone who decides to keep it for their own;

- The dog may attack a person, or another person’s cat or dog, or may itself be attacked by another dog;

- The dog may encounter a snake and be bitten, or come to some other serious harm, including starvation;

- If it’s a rural area where livestock is kept, the dog may be legally shot by a property owner;

- Rangers are experienced in finding and capturing dogs, and have the special equipment and skills to do it;

- Rangers can identify the owners of dogs that are registered or microchipped, or dogs they are familiar with because of previous incidents, experiences and knowledge;

- The dog’s owners are very likely to have already contacted the rangers looking for their dog;

- If a lost dog is impounded by a ranger, it is kept safe and well cared for by experienced pound staff until claimed by the owner.

- If a dog is being neglected or abused in any way by an irresponsible owner, the pound staff will assess whether it's in the dog's best interests to be returned to that owner.

- If a dog is not registered or microchipped as required by law, this will be done before the dog is returned to its owner.

The importance of Microchips 🐾🩷

Microchipping!

Who would’ve thought such a small piece of technology would become such an integral part of pet ownership! We see the benefits first hand when a lost fur child gets reunited with their loving family. Thank goodness for the chips! 🐶🐱

However, just because your pet is microchipped, does not mean that if they are lost that they will make their way back to you. As the pet owner, YOU are responsible for ensuring that the details listed on the microchip are accurate and up to date.

Have you recently:
- Moved homes
- Changed your phone number
- Purchased a new puppy
- Inherited a dog from family

If the answer is yes, we urge you to CHECK the details on your pets microchip.

The first step to do this is to locate your pets microchip registering company and make contact with them - there are quite a few! Most of this can be done online with your pets chip number. Once these details are updated, you will have a much higher chance of being reunited if your fur child ever goes on an adventure. 🐾🏔️🏝️

If your dog has outgrown any harness, leads, collars or jackets or you just have too many and are not sure what to do with them, pop them in our donation bin. My favourite season is here and my Frankie and I are loving the cooler weather (and the extra snuggles that come with it!)

Here’s a couple of tips to care for your pets grooming needs as the cooler weather is approaching 💕

1: Maintain your regular grooming schedule. You don’t stop caring for your own skin and hair just because the season has changed, so why would you stop caring for your dogs skin and coat? Our little fluffies have fur that grows all year round, so don’t be tempted to cancel your pets grooming just because the mornings are getting a little chilly. You don’t want to have your dog shaved in the middle of winter when they’re matted because their grooming schedule has lapsed. And who wants a stinky dog with a grubby butt snuggling under the covers?
2: Jumpers! I’m a sucker for a cute pet in pyjamas but if your pet is into fashion please remember that the friction of the fabric against their fur will cause matting. If you like your pet fluffy, you need to remove their clothes everyday and brush and comb their fur thoroughly. Alternatively you can consider Asian (Teddy) style grooming which features shorter body lengths and fluffy legs, this style is perfectly designed for the furry fashionista as the fur that can get matted is short!
So in short keep on your regular 6 weekly schedule I’d hate to have to shave off short in August 😊🐾
