RSPCA WA

RSPCA WA We are WA’s leading animal welfare charity organisation, preventing cruelty and promoting kindness.

When animals are let down by their owners, left helpless, traumatised and alone, they rely on RSPCA WA to step in and give them a second chance at life, love and happiness. Since 1892, RSPCA WA has worked tirelessly to prevent animal cruelty. We have rescued, rehabilitated and rehomed animals of many kinds and given them a second chance. We have educated the community and lobbied the Government to

promote animal welfare and prevent cruelty. Our Mission:
Lead the improvement of animal welfare in WA through prevention and intervention programs, advocacy, and education. We do this through:
🐾 Promoting and enforcing animal welfare legislation and driving legislative change
🐾 Educating and influencing the community
🐾 Achieving organisational excellence and delivering best practice animal care. At RSPCA WA we are dedicated to improving the treatment of animals because we believe it strengthens our society, enhances our lives and contributes to a better world. We have made great strides towards our vision, but there is still a long way to go. RSPCA WA would simply not exist without individuals and organisations who share our vision. We rely on the generosity of animal lovers to contribute around $9 million each year, the majority of what it costs to carry out our animal protection work. In order to overcome the challenges of increasing demand, rising costs and a vast geographical service area, it is critical that RSPCA WA continue to grow its supporter base. Through personal donations and gifts, and corporate fundraising initiatives, as well as a calendar of events, we will work to connect with people who want to protect and save Western Australia’s most vulnerable animals.

Teamwork makes the dream work! This family was saved! 🐈

On Tuesday last week our inspectors attended a call where a litter of kittens were living in a roof space. The kittens’ desperate meows were heard by the homeowners who did the right thing and called our hotline.

Our inspectors arrived and quickly assessed the scene to discover that one of the kittens had moved and become stuck in a wall cavity! The kitten was tightly wedged in and in a very awkward position – without specialised tools, things looked scary. Our team needed help.

The team called the local firies at the nearby Butler Fire Station to assist.

Two hours later, the kitten was finally freed. Aside from being a little hungry and dusty, the kitten was otherwise unharmed.

The whole litter was taken to our Malaga shelter where they were immediately checked by our vet team. We’re still looking for the mother, but the kittens are now safe and warm with full tummies in foster homes, thanks to the help of the firies.

How lucky were these kitties? So lucky that we have named them as such – Lucky, Clover, Chance, and Fortune are very grateful to have been saved.

Thanks so much to the team at Butler Fire Station! We and the kittens appreciate your help! 👨‍🚒💖 Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA

Our post yesterday about our long-term residents did so well, we thought we'd do a part 2, as sadly, many pets have been in our care for far longer than usual.

Being homeless for more than 3 months is a really upsetting experience for an animal who was once a cherished pet. 🐾🫶

These displaced cats, dogs, rabbits, and more are relying on you to make them feel whole again by giving them a home and a loving family. 🥰🥹

You can learn more about the animals by clicking the 🔗 in the comments and searching for their profiles on our adoption portal.

Come in and meet them at our Malaga shelter. Our gates open tomorrow at 9am! 🐾

These long-term shelter residents have spent over 600 days in total waiting to get adopted. Please, help us find them homes! 😓

Nothing breaks our hearts more than when an animal is in our care for a long time, and these six animals are certainly no exception. Ranging from a couple to several months in care, these animals all want one thing - for someone to see them, choose them, and love them. But the days keep bleeding by, with every passerby who walks away crushing their hope. 💔

Pictured below is:
🐾 Lana - a sweet Mastiff who has been here for 183 days - that's roughly six months.
🐾 Alexander McQueen - a lovely older white cat who has been waiting over 128 days for a home.
🐾 Cranium and Ludo - a bonded pair of rabbits who have been here for 116 days.
🐾 Axel - a big boy with an even bigger heart who has been here just shy of 100 days.
🐾 Belle - A resident who has been here for 76 days, most of that time spent caring for her kittens. She then watched them all find homes, one by one, until she was left waiting all alone for her turn. It hasn't come yet.

You can learn more about each pet by tapping their photo and clicking the 🔗 in the comments.

Our Malaga shelter opens at 9am tomorrow. We have our fingers and paws crossed that these deserving animals all find the homes they have been waiting so patiently for. 💖

IMPORTANT - we have a fee-free senior cat! Will you give 15-year-old Allan the retirement home of his dreams? 🐈‍⬛🥰

Sweet gentleman Allan needs a home more special than most - this older guy has hyperthyroidism and a few other veterinary conditions that our team will chat to any potential adopter about prior to his adoption.

He's sweet, smoochy, confident and would suit almost all homes!

If you think you can show this beautiful cat the love he deserves during his twilight years, please book an appointment and meet him tomorrow!

Note that while he is fee-free, all of our normal adoption procedures are still in place so rest assured he will only go to a home that is suitable for his needs. 🐈‍⬛

On Sundays we run by appointment only. To book an appointment, please head to our website via the 🔗 in the comments. You can also view his adoption profile by heading there as well. Otherwise, we accept walk-ins Tues-Sat, 9am-5pm. Allan can't wait to meet you! 🥰💖

This adoption pup-date has us in happy tears. Our hearts are so full for Shia! 🥹🥰

We recently received an update from Shia, who was adopted from our Malaga shelter in 2010. This Staffy x Boxer came into our care after her owner developed allergies toward her.

Shia's adoption update is so incredibly sweet, we just HAD to share it with you! 🥰

"This is Shia! She's now 14.5 years old and going strong.

"Her hearing and eyesight are starting to go, and she lost her fur brother Major Tom a few months ago but she is still living her best life and (she) brings us so much joy.

"I've often thought about sending through an update. My husband and I actually originally went to the facility to look for a dog for my mum after our family dog passed, but ended up going home with Shia.

"It really was love at first sight, she was so sweet and gentle and great at following commands, which is quite funny because she has never been as well behaved as she was that day we met her!

"She has always been a bit of a wild child, stealing roasts from the kitchen bench, chasing the horse around the paddock, climbing up hills like a mountain goat, but her adventures always made for a good laugh and a funny story.

"She's the glue of our family and we are just so grateful she came into our lives. Thank you for all that you do RSPCA. You are amazing.

"Kindest,
Kyrsten and Daniel"
.. Is someone cutting onions? 🥹😭

While writing this post, we found a photo of her from when she was surrendered to us as a puppy. Seeing her go from young adolescent to old with the greys in her fur is so heartwarming. She's lived such a full and joyful life, it's clear as day to see.

Thank you both for choosing to adopt a shelter animal. It truly makes our hearts sing seeing updates like this. We 💖 you Shia! 🥰

Rest in peace, Jamison. Today, you've received some justice for a tragedy that was entirely avoidable. 🤍👇

A 38-year-old Floreat man was fined $4000 today after pleading guilty to trapping and confining a pet cat, Jamison, in an esky for approximately ten hours, likely causing the cat's "long, slow, painful" death.

This was a deliberate and cruel act. In sentencing, Magistrate Woods said once the cat was in the esky, he "had no chance of surviving". She said Jamison was "vulnerable" and "...suffered, no doubt, a lot of pain and distress."

Our hearts go out to Jamison's family. Even if the offender thought Jamison was a stray, there is never an excuse to be deliberately cruel to an animal, in this case causing a terrifying death.

You can read the full article by heading to the 🔗 in the comments. 👇

NOTE: We have a zero-tolerance policy for comments blaming the grieving family for Jamison's death. Please be respectful toward the family who has lost a beloved family member. While we advocate for cat containment, there is never an excuse to harm an animal. It is not the family’s fault that Jamison has passed – it is entirely the offender’s fault and comments that insinuate otherwise will be removed.

There's no better way to beat a WA heatwave than having a bite of a Zooper Dooper, taking a dip in a pool, or playing on the slip and slide to cool off. A frozen Kong or 12 also helps! 🐶

Can the heatwave stop now, please? 😫😩

UPDATE: William and Jessie have been adopted! 💞

IMPORTANT - we have a bonded pair of Maltese terriers available for adoption! 🥰

William and Jessie came to us sadly after their owner's health took a turn for the worst and the owner could no longer care for them. William is 6 years old and Jessie is 8 years old.

As they are bonded, we will NOT be separating them.

These two are:
🐾 great with kids (pending a meet)
🐾 best suited to be the only dogs in the home
🐾 best suited to live with part-time workers - they love their humans so much!

If you think your home would suit these two beautiful dogs, come to our Malaga shelter tomorrow and meet them!

You can learn more about them via the 🔗 in the comments. 👇

We really thought at least one of these pups would find their forever home after we posted about them last week!

Unfortunately, these guys are still here, waiting for someone to adopt them. 🥺🐶

Please consider adopting a dog this week and give them the second chance they deserve. Don’t make it so that they have to spend another week in the kennels! Visit RSPCA WA today. 💚🩵

🔥A reminder to please keep your dogs at home, and what to do if you see a dog in a hot car! 👇🔥

Since 1 December we've had 123 heat-related cruelty complains and, given the weather today and what's forecasted for the rest of the week, we are dreading the number of dogs in heat distress or worse. 😟😓

Over the weekend, our inspectors attended a shopping centre carpark after receiving a report about two small-breed dogs who were confined in a vehicle. The outside temperature was 41 degrees.

‼️Astoundingly, the owners told the inspector that they had discussed whether to leave the dogs in the car, or if one of them should stay with them with the aircon on. They chose to both go shopping, attending different stores to speed up the process, leaving the dogs behind.

The dogs thankfully are okay, but their situation could have turned deadly in a matter of minutes. If you love your dog, leave them at home. A quick visit to the shops could cost your dog their life. Don't put your dog's life at risk.

Save, screenshot, and this for future reference! 👇

If you see a dog in a hot car:
🐾 Identify signs of heatstroke.
🐾 Note down the vehicle's registration number and location and report it immediately to the RSPCA Cruelty Hotline on 1300 278 358 (1300 CRUELTY) or call WA Police on 131 444.
🐾 If you're at a shopping centre, ask the centre management to page the owner of the vehicle by reading out the registration details.
🐾 Keep an eye on the dog until help arrives but maintain a suitable distance to ensure you don't agitate the dog, which could cause further distress, making the dog even hotter.
🐾 Gather as much evidence as possible (vehicle details, time and date, photos of the dog in the vehicle).

It's an offence under the Animal Welfare Act 2002 to cause unnecessary harm to an animal, and offenders can be prosecuted and face up to five years in prison and a $50,000 fine. Let's keep our pets safe, WA!

UPDATE: Honey has been adopted! 🥰

Does your cat need a friend? Honey's been waiting for one for over six months. 💔

While in foster care, this one-year-old cat made leaps and bounds in her confidence, but she hasn't coped well after returning to the shelter. Poor Honey hides under furniture and inside tunnels in her favourite playroom. Our staff and volunteers have had some success in coaxing her out with food, but she is still so wary.

But, we've found that she ADORES other cats and would thrive in a home where she can hang out with a trusty feline friend to help her confidence grow! 🥰

Her purr-fect owners will need to be patient and understanding. She needs a calm, quiet environment where she can gain confidence in herself and her people. It will take a little bit of time and work to show her that she is safe and loved, but she will be worth every minute of it!

Best of all, Honey is fee free. Rest assured our normal adoption procedures are in place, but we hope the waived fee will help her find a home of her own.

If you can provide this loving girl with the life she's been missing, come down to RSPCA Malaga tomorrow to meet her. Our gates open at 9am. More information about Honey can be found in the 🔗 in the comments.

🔥 IMPORTANT HOT WEATHER PET SAFETY TIPS 🔥

It's going to be a SCORCHER tomorrow, so please keep the below in mind so all WA pets are safe and happy! ☀️

🐕 If you can't keep the palm of your hand on the ground comfortably for more than 5 seconds, it's too hot to walk your dog! This goes for hot beach sand as well as dirt and pavement. Please walk your dog in the early morning hours or after the sun's gone down to keep their paws safe.

🚗 Never leave your dog in a hot car. Even if it's just a quick duck down to the shops, your dog can suffer greatly and potentially die. If they suffer from separation anxiety, it’s better to leave them barking in the aircon for 20 minutes than in a locked car. There are no excuses!

🐕‍🦺Ensure your dog isn't ever left tethered without access to water and shelter. It's best to bring your pooch indoors for extreme weather days such as tomorrow. No dog should ever be left out in the heat!

💧 From the littlest to the biggest, make sure all your pets have access to plenty of cool, fresh water at all times. It’s best to provide two water sources in case one gets knocked over.

❄️ Large blocks of ice made of stock or with treats frozen in them are fantastic for dogs, while guinea pigs, rats and rabbits love a frozen water bottle to lie on.

💦 Horses, chooks and other birds love a sprinkler they can cool down under while many dogs enjoy a kiddie pool to splash in.

If you see a pet in distress, please make a report by calling our cruelty hotline on 1300 CRUELTY (1300 278 358) or online via the 🔗 in the comments. 👇

Betty has gained so much confidence!
This shows a huge transformation since Betty was adopted last year! 🥰❤️

Betty, who was known as Nala, came into our care in July last year after her owner could no longer care for her. A month later, she was found by her forever humans after being relocated to Pet Barn.

Her adopters, Lily and Venessa have sent an adoption update that shocked us all!

Venessa said, "she was really shy and nervous! She did not greet us, or came around for pats like other bubbly, playful cats we have met. She just sat in the corner, and looked a bit cautious." They were prepared to accept Betty and love her in spite of her shyness, but this subdued nature didn’t last long.

"It took only couple of days (we followed some suggestions about settling cat to their new home) for her to wander around the whole house like a boss and come through. She actually likes hanging out with us, sitting together on the sofa and getting pats. She is so playful and cheeky. She does zoomies, especially in the morning." 😺😂

Betty's true playful nature has certainly come out since she was adopted, and we're so grateful to her new owners for giving Betty a forever home where she feels comfortable enough to come out of her shell.

"We’d love to highlight that adopting Betty has added joys to our lives. And perhaps to encourage others to take a chance on adopting what looks like ‘introverted’ or shy ones." 😃

Thank you, Lily and Venessa, for this amazing story of transformation. We are so grateful that you opened your hearts and home to this shy girl and are living your happily ever after! 😍🐾

UPDATE: Fluffy has been adopted! 🥰

Fluffy the Rottweiler is ready for a home! Will you be the one who adopts him? 😍

Also known as Mr Fluff or Fluffmeister, this one-year-old Rottie can't wait for his forever person to walk in and choose him! 🥰

He sadly hasn't been coping well in the shelter environment - he much prefers the creature comforts of a caring home. All he wants is a home where he can have endless toys (he is obsessed with them), treats, and cuddles. 🐶

Fluffy would do best where:
🐾 he is the only dog in the home (but he can have outside doggy friends in the future!)
🐾 older, dog-savvy children, pending a meet (he can be a bit boisterous!)
🐾 full-time workers (as long as Fluffy's had plenty of physical and mental enrichment!)

Think he'd be paw-fect for you? Come and meet him tomorrow at our Malaga shelter - gates open at 9am! And if you can't adopt him yourself, please help us spread the word! 🥰

His profile can be found via the 🔗 in the comments. 👇

PLEASE keep your cat contained to your property!

'Cat containment' means keeping your cat contained on your property at all times, preventing them from roaming during the night and day. They can either be kept strictly indoors or have access to a secure outdoor cat run enclosure.

Cats who are allowed to roam freely are more susceptible to the following risks:
🐾 Being hit by a car
🐾 Being attacked by a dog or other wildlife or pets
🐾 Acquiring a serious infection
🐾 Eating toxic plants or poisonous substances
🐾 Being stolen or abused
🐾 Picking up ticks or fleas
🐾 Being bitten by a snake
🐾 Becoming pregnant / impregnating other cats.

The last point is very important, as shelters and pounds across the state feel this strain, especially during kitten season. At the moment, we have 113 cats and kittens in care, placing a great strain on our resources while we wait for them to become ready for rehoming.

Please, if you're able to, keep your cat contained to your property. It's safer for them, the environment, and will save you a lot of heartache in the long run.

For tips on how to contain your cat, how to transition your cat from outdoor to indoor, and how to keep your cat happy indoors, head to the 🔗 in the comments!
