" At The Vet Connection, we recently witnessed an incredible story of bravery. Sailor, a 12-year-old Kelpie mix, came to us with a small lump that turned out to be bone cancer.
Dr Sam performed the limb amputation, giving Sailor a second chance at life. The surgery was a success, and his recovery has been remarkable. Eight months later, he's thriving, running at the beach every day, and inspiring us all with his resilience and zest for life.

We're honoured to be part of Sailor's journey and look forward to many more happy years with him."

Our goal is to review the most common medications and supplements so you can wisely choose how to achieve good pain-free mobility in your pet.

But what should you choose?

What should you ask our vets when your pet's regimen is assembled?

Degenerative joint disease is the number one cause of chronic pain in dogs and cats. The condition itself is the result of long-term stresses on a joint, either as a result of an old injury or the natural development of a poorly conformed joint.

While surgery may be able to help in some situations, most of the time, the degeneration of the joint cannot be reversed, and treatment focuses on preventing the progression of damage.

Of the products available, some are best combined with others, and some are not.

What we know is that arthritis pain is best addressed by what is called a multi-modal approach, meaning that several approaches combined yield better results.

Medications for arthritis pain are divided into three groups: fast-acting e.g (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) , slow-acting drugs e.g injection course

* Most likely, the best arthritis plan will involve combining products from different classes.
* Your veterinarian will put together a plan that may include an anti-inflammatory pain reliever, some supplements, and possibly additional products depending on the other conditions of the patient and severity of the condition.
* Avoid a do-it-yourself approach, as you may accidentally create a dangerous medication interaction.
* consult your veterinarian and approve the final plan.

Is your cat losing interest in their toys?
Is your cat struggling with stairs?

Did you know that arthritus pain affectes nearly 40% of cats!

Arthritis is a condition that leads to pain and progressive degeneration of the joints. It affects many aspects of a cat’s life including limiting mobility, causing sore joints and
ultimately a poor quality of life.

Signs can often be subtle and you may never notice lameness in your cat. It is important to look
out for other signs like a change in behaviour.

This may include defecating outside the litter box, hesitating when jumping and/or difficulty
grooming. Cats in discomfort may also elect to sleep in areas of the house that do not require stairs to minimize movement.

Arthritis is common in cats of all sizes, ages and breeds so it is important to monitor
your cats’ behaviour from a young age.

Call us up if you are concerned, and let our friendly staff take care of your furry friend.

Don't risk your pup's health with deadly heartworm!

Heartworm, transmitted by mosquitoes year-round in Australia, starts as larvae entering through a mosquito bite, eventually growing into adult worms in the heart and lungs, up to 12 inches long, living for 5-7 years.

Symptoms vary based on worm count and infestation severity. Most dogs show no signs initially, but high worm counts or allergic reactions can lead to coughing, exercise intolerance, and fainting.

Watch for weight loss, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Severe cases can result in lung blood clots, heart failure, or death.

The heartworm antigen test, quick and accurate, detects adult heartworm antigens in your dog's blood, available at your vet's office. It may take 6-7 months for worms to mature enough for detection. Note: The test only finds female worms, and dogs can test positive up to 5 months after treatment.

Don't forget monthly medication! Protect your pup year-round. Visit us today!
