" At The Vet Connection, we recently witnessed an incredible story of bravery. Sailor, a 12-year-old Kelpie mix, came to us with a small lump that turned out to be bone cancer.
Dr Sam performed the limb amputation, giving Sailor a second chance at life. The surgery was a success, and his recovery has been remarkable. Eight months later, he's thriving, running at the beach every day, and inspiring us all with his resilience and zest for life.

Our goal is to review the most common medications and supplements so you can wisely choose how to achieve good pain-free mobility in your pet.
But what should you choose?
What should you ask our vets when your pet's regimen is assembled?
Degenerative joint disease is the number one cause of chronic pain in dogs and cats. The condition itself is the result of long-term stresses on a joint, either as a result of an old injury or the natural development of a poorly conformed joint.
While surgery may be able to help in some situations, most of the time, the degeneration of the joint cannot be reversed, and treatment focuses on preventing the progression of damage.
Of the products available, some are best combined with others, and some are not.
What we know is that arthritis pain is best addressed by what is called a multi-modal approach, meaning that several approaches combined yield better results.
Medications for arthritis pain are divided into three groups: fast-acting e.g (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) , slow-acting drugs e.g injection course
* Most likely, the best arthritis plan will involve combining products from different classes.
* Your veterinarian will put together a plan that may include an anti-inflammatory pain reliever, some supplements, and possibly additional products depending on the other conditions of the patient and severity of the condition.
* Avoid a do-it-yourself approach, as you may accidentally create a dangerous medication interaction.
* consult your veterinarian and approve the final plan.

Is your cat losing interest in their toys?
Is your cat struggling with stairs?
Did you know that arthritus pain affectes nearly 40% of cats!
Arthritis is a condition that leads to pain and progressive degeneration of the joints. It affects many aspects of a catโs life including limiting mobility, causing sore joints and
ultimately a poor quality of life.
Signs can often be subtle and you may never notice lameness in your cat. It is important to look
out for other signs like a change in behaviour.
This may include defecating outside the litter box, hesitating when jumping and/or difficulty
grooming. Cats in discomfort may also elect to sleep in areas of the house that do not require stairs to minimize movement.
Arthritis is common in cats of all sizes, ages and breeds so it is important to monitor
your catsโ behaviour from a young age.
Call us up if you are concerned, and let our friendly staff take care of your furry friend.

Don't risk your pup's health with deadly heartworm!
Heartworm, transmitted by mosquitoes year-round in Australia, starts as larvae entering through a mosquito bite, eventually growing into adult worms in the heart and lungs, up to 12 inches long, living for 5-7 years.
Symptoms vary based on worm count and infestation severity. Most dogs show no signs initially, but high worm counts or allergic reactions can lead to coughing, exercise intolerance, and fainting.
Watch for weight loss, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Severe cases can result in lung blood clots, heart failure, or death.
The heartworm antigen test, quick and accurate, detects adult heartworm antigens in your dog's blood, available at your vet's office. It may take 6-7 months for worms to mature enough for detection. Note: The test only finds female worms, and dogs can test positive up to 5 months after treatment.
Don't forget monthly medication! Protect your pup year-round. Visit us today!

Sharing smiles, snuggles, and success stories from our week!
If you ever wondered what happened behind the clinic doors, now you know!
From kisses to inspiring recoveries, join us on a journey of love and healing. ๐ถโค๏ธ๐ฑ Surgery, cuddles, and everything in between! ๐๐ค
To second our Move Well post below, one of our staff members puppa Locky, has been an amazing candiate to show the physical changes that can happen when going through arthritis treatment!
๐ถ ๐ฑ Osteoarthritis (also known as Degenerative Joint Disease);
Is a progressive and painful condition involving inflammation and degeneration of one or more joints. Its onset is usually slow and insidious, which means it is commonly missed by pet owners. ๐
The signs of arthritis can be very subtle but also vary between individual pets and species. ๐พ
Common signs of arthritis include:
- Sleeping more ๐ด
- Stiffness when getting up ๐ถโโ๏ธ
- Limping, which may occur only after exercise ๐ฆฎ
- Struggling to get comfortable ๐
In cats, arthritic signs can be much harder to detect and may include:
- Urinating or defecating in unusual places ๐ฝ
- Reluctance to jump ๐
- Not playing ๐พ
- Behavioral changes such as aggression towards pets or family members ๐พ
What to do:
If you suspect your pet has arthritis, why not bring him or her in for a joint check? Suffering from arthritis can have a huge impact on quality of life, so the sooner we can start managing it, the better! ๐ฅ
Treatment: Unfortunately, in most cases, arthritis is all about management, not cure. We usually follow the principles of W.E.T management.
W: Weight management.
Ensure your pet maintains a healthy weight. Additional weight on painful joints can significantly contribute to pain. ๐ฅ
Here at The Vet Connection, we can help you with a weight management plan to ensure we reach our weight loss goals. We have discounted all arthritis-related foods by 20% during our Move Well Month! ๐
E: Exercise
Think consistent, frequent, and low impact. We recommend daily walks instead of activities like chasing a ball or running on the beach. ๐ถโโ๏ธ
T: Therapy
There are many treatment options available, some of which may be more suitable for your pet than others. Includeing supplements, anti-inflammatory drugs, and pain relief medications. ๐ฟ
The different medication options will be discussed during your consultation to ensure we make the right choice for both you and your pet. Arthritis injections and topical medications will be discounted by 10% during Move Well Month. ๐

๐พThis is a friendly reminder to watch out for your four-legged friends around the picnic tables, although they may give you puppy eyes, tasty treats like sausages, cakes, chocolate, grapes, and alcohol may be toxic to your pet. ๐ฝ
If you are concerned about what they have consumed this labour day please make sure you contact an after hours emergency clinic or come see us on Tuesday and get your four-legged friend checked out ASAP!
๐๐ฅ Apart from all the tasty treats they will want to eat, please be careful when taking your pet out on the hot pavements and the dry grass. Grass seeds are very good at hiding but extremely painful for your pet. If you notice your pet constantly licking please check the area thoroughly, if the licking and discomfort continue please book a consult through the link in our bio. ๐ถ

"๐ Ellie's Journey at the clinic is all about love and happiness! ๐ Originally here for a routine desexing, her story took a turn when a pre-anaesthetic blood test revealed high liver enzymes.

๐ฎ Did you know that dental disease is one of the most common issues unknowingly affecting our furry friends, and often can have a huge impact on quality of life.
Here at The Vet Connection we are dedicated to ensuring that we maintain those pearly whites ๐ in tip top shape, so much so that we offer dental month twice a year.
Dental disease can affect any pet at any age, but definitely more common in middle aged - older pets, and specific breeds more than others. Some studies have even suggested that up to 85% of dogs and cats 6 years and older have some dental disease. It is painful which can lead to poor appetite, and reduces quality of life.
๐We are offering free dental checks during dental month currently running during February and March, with Dental cap and an additional 10% off our dentals (Terms on conditions apply) ๐
Signs of dental disease you may see at home:
- Red gums
- Smelly breath (Halitosis)
- Broken teeth
- Not wanting to eat, avoiding hard foods or chewing on one side of the mouth
- Discolored teeth
- Weight loss
What does a dental for my pet entail?๐ถ๐ฑ
Unfortunately our pets are not as cooperative as we are when sitting in the dental chair, so a general anaesthetic is required.
Your pet is closely monitored by our well trained staff, whilst receiving their dental scale and polish. Each tooth is probed individually to ensure there is no indication for extraction. We may even recommend that some x-rays are performed to assess what the tooth looks like beneath the surface to ensure we make the best decision in regards to treatment.
๐ DID YOU KNOW: In cats dental disease is much harder to identify just by looking at the mouth, so we may recommend x-rays more often than not.
What to do?
Book in your free dental consultation
If you have been putting off booking in your pets dental, call today!!!
Given the time and care taken, spaces for how many dentals can be performed each day is limited.
