Arthritis and the pain it creates causes a change in posture due to weight shifting away from the affected joints. These limbs are ‘off-loaded’ and weaken in strength and function as they are used less. Other regions of the body are then recruited to carry more load to compensate for the off-loading, thus creating greater stress and tension on these joints. For example, a dog with painful hind limbs will carry less weight through them to avoid pain, shifting weight onto the forelimbs. The reduced use of the hindlimbs will lead to less propulsion and stability, and more stiffness. The dog’s back, forelimbs and neck will work hard to compensate to maintain the dog’s mobility. Over time this can lead to painful arthritis in these compensated joints areas.

At Dog Essence, we offer a variety of services such as Phototherapy, TTouch, Massage, and nutritional advise to assist with pain reduction and to improve and maintain mobility in your dog to support your dog to give them a better quality of life.

Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of chronic pain in dogs. It affects 80% of dogs over the age of 8 years, however, can affect younger dogs with up to 35% of dogs of all ages being diagnosed with osteoarthritis.

Any dog can develop arthritis, but those that may be more predisposed to arthritis include:
- Certain medium to large breeds
- Dogs with known developmental joint problems such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation or osteochondrosis. Developmental joint disease is the leading cause of arthritis.
- Overweight or obese dogs
- Dogs that have sustained trauma to a joint
- Previous surgery on a joint

Arthritis can, and often does, affect more than one joint. In dogs the most commonly affected joints are the hips and elbows, however any articulating joint can be affected and cause great discomfort.

At Dog Essence, we offer a variety of services such as Phototherapy, TTouch, Massage, and nutritional advise to assist with pain reduction and to improve mobility in your dog to support your dog to give them a better quality of life.

Fascia influences our movement by providing support and a framework for our muscles. It also helps us maintain our posture and balance. When the fascia is tight or restricted, it can cause pain and limit our range of motion.

Treatments such as massage, cranial sacral therapy and TTouch help release tension in the fascia

Fascia is connected to the peripheral nervous system. It is a complex web of connective tissues that envelops muscles, bones, and organs in our bodies. It's made up of collagen fibres and other proteins that provide structure and stability. Fascia plays a crucial role in our movement and affects our nervous system.

The nervous system controls and coordinates all bodily functions. There are two main components to the nervous system, the central nervous system (the brain and the spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (nerves throughout the body) which include the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.

Watch out for next week's post to learn about the peripheral nervous system and how we can tap into the parasympathetic nervous system to help with relaxation and health for your pet!

Research has shown that T-Touch® helps to activate the parasympathetic part of the central nervous system which is responsible for a calming and relaxing effect. This, in turn, can reduce stress and anxiety in dogs.

Interestingly, the gentle touches that are typical of Tellington Touch also stimulates the release of oxytocin, which is also known as the "love hormone." The release of the hormone can help to strengthen the bond between the dog and the owner, and it can also promote a happy and calm state of mind for the dog.

In the early 1970s, Linda Tellington invented TTouch® as a form of animal therapy. This involves performing specific touches on a dog's body that are intended to influence the nervous system positively. This helps a dog to overcome stress or anxiety and to feel safe and secure. This can in turn positively influence a dog's behaviour.

There are safe, gentle and effective therapies available to assist your dog during their rehabilitation, whether post-injury or post-surgery. Dog Essence offers therapies such as Red Light Therapy, Emmett Therapy and TTouch therapy. See previous post which details how Emmett Therapy is beneficial for post-surgery or post-injury rehabilitation.

Red Light Therapy assists in reducing pain and inflammation and helps with faster healing and repair of injured tissue, or to assist with healing of tissue after surgeries. This therapy is pain-free and allows for deeper healing. The red light causes a chemical reaction in the mitochondria of the cells. The mitochondria are responsible for energy and cell regeneration, thus helps with skin and body wound repair, as well as reducing pain and inflammation.

TTouch stimulates the function and vitality of the cells in an animal’s body and will activate unused neural pathways to the brain. Ttouch engages the parasympathetic nervous system, relaxing muscle tension and allowing heart rate, blood pressure and circulation to slow, thus reducing stress levels. Reduced stress levels allows for more body awareness and healing through healthy functioning of the cells.

Tellington Touch and Flower Remedies are both effective treatments that help reduce anxiety in your dog and allow them to be happier and more confident. These two treatments combined have shown to be very effective in anxious dogs.

TTouch comprises a series of circular movements, body wraps and groundwork exercises that assist with sensory integration and emotional regulation which reduces stress overall, improving your dog’s level of self-confidence and self-control. TTouch is unique as it works through various sensory systems namely the proprioceptive system, tactile system and vestibular systems and reactivates the parasympathetic nervous system, helping to bring an anxious or fearful dog back into a state of calm and balance on a physical, mental and emotional level.

TTouches such as the Python Lift, Belly Lifts, Mouth work and Ear work are excellent touches to reduce muscular tension and influence a calm emotional response through its effect on the limbic system and the vagus nerve. Beta brain waves are activated which allows for deliberate thinking and problem-solving in response to environmental challenges, allowing for more appropriate responses in stressful situations.

The effects of TTouch are lasting and cumulative, so we’re able to teach our animals new, more effective ways of coping with the demands of the environment. Improved coping skills are known to increase health and longevity.

Bach Flower Remedies are a natural and healthy means of addressing anxiety. They address each dog’s unique type of anxiety, whether caused by fear, overwhelm, worry, or whether the cause is known or unknown. By identifying specific emotional and behavioural patterns in your dog, matching the right remedy or remedies for the emotion being expressed will balance your dog toward being anxiety free, naturally and without side effects and is safe to take alongside conventional medicine.

Dog Essence can help you help your anxious dog. Call us to book a Ttouch and/or a Flower Remedy consultation.

Is your dog anxious? Any of these signs could indicate your dog is anxious. Some of these signs may also indicate that your dog is suffering from undiagnosed pain that requires further investigation and treatment.

⚡️Your dog is reactive such as growling, barking, and lunging toward other animals and/or people.
⚡️Your dog freezes when confronted with pressure of any kind, or new experiences.
⚡️Your dog becomes distressed when left alone, and may display destructive behaviour.
⚡️Your dog barks excessively.
⚡️Your toilet-trained dog urinates or defecates in your home.
⚡️Your dog drools or pants excessively when they are stressed or in a new environment.
⚡️Your dog is clingy, jumps on you or seeks comfort if in a new environment or meeting new people.
⚡️Your dog is restless or fidgety and takes a while to settle, and is generally hyper-vigilant.
⚡️Your dog paces.
⚡️Your dog shows a toy addiction or displays obsessive-compulsive behaviour.
⚡️Certain sounds may distress your dog.
⚡️Your dog is unable to respond to commands they understand when they become stressed.
⚡️Your dog has snapped at or bitten another animal or human.

If you’ve answered yes to any of these signs, your dog may be suffering from anxiety. Seeking help to assist them will help them manage their behaviours and feel more confident in their environment.

Therapies that greatly benefit dogs with anxiety include correct nutrition (gut issues are a big cause of anxiety), Flower Remedies, Craniosacral Therapy, Tellington Touch, and other bodywork such as Massage and Emmett Therapy.

If your dog suffers from anxiety and you’d like to help them, give us a call and we can discuss your concerns and the best treatment action plan for your dog.

🌿🐶 Having a happy, healthy, lively dog for as long as possible into their old age is what every pet parent wants for their dog.

Here are some tips on how to do this, with food – food is medicine!🥚🥦🥥

Treating your dog holistically is essential. See previous post on tips on how to reduce exposure to inflammatory triggers.

Whether you feed kibble/dry food or a fresh raw species-appropriate diet (which is the way to go), these toppers will add a vitality boost to your dog. Wherever possible, use organic and non-genetically modified foods (especially berries and sprouts). You want to minimise the chemical load you are feeding your dog.

✅These foods are high in natural vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and antioxidants, which will naturally reduce inflammation and pain, is good for the digestive system, will support a healthy immune system, and boost vitality.

🚫Never feed: cooked bone, cooked fat, xylitol, chocolate, grapes, raisins, fruit and vegetable seeds and pits, onions, macadamia nuts, processed meats such as ham, bacon and sausage.

What will you add to your dog’s bowl today? Comment below.

Why is it important to minimise 🔥inflammatory🔥 triggers in your dog’s environment?

Inflammation that is left unchecked becomes chronic and will lead to pain, accelerated ageing, damage to internal organs, dysregulation of the immune system and can eventually lead to auto-immune diseases.

Various causes trigger chronic inflammation. Some can be avoided whilst others cannot – see where you can minimise your dog’s exposure:

🔥Vaccinations. Titer test before vaccinating.

🔥Pest Prevention such as tick and flea powder and parasite medication. Effective natural alternatives are available.

🔥Pharmaceutical Drugs as they destroy the gut microbiome. Herbs, homoeopathic and natural remedies work just as well.

🔥Poor diet such as processed foods (kibble/pellets) are extremely inflammatory.

🔥Environmental Toxins such as pesticides and herbicides (glyphosate or Roundup) and chemicals and artificial fragrances used around the house and in cleaning products. Use natural non-toxic cleaning products such as white vinegar and essential oils, and minimise or eliminate the use of pesticides and herbicides in and around your home. It is better for you, the environment and your pets!

🔥Electromagnetic Radiation such as mobile phones, network towers, wi-fi routers and other devices all emit radiation that can cause chronic low-grade inflammation. Have your dog’s bed as far away from the wifi routers and plugs as possible. Don’t place your mobile phone near them. Switch your wifi off at night!

🔥Stress and Anxiety: remember that your pet is sensitive and will respond to your stress levels.

What will you do to minimise your dog’s exposure to inflammatory triggers? We go as natural and chemical-free as possible using herbs and homoeopathics, switch off the wifi at night and feed a fresh whole food species-appropriate diet.

To make the most of your pet’s twilight years 🌅, and to keep your dog as active and young as possible, consider bodywork for them.

There are an array of treatments available that can assist with pain relief, improving mobility and range of motion as well as muscular tension and increasing muscle tone and circulation.

Our most popular treatment is 🌿Massage and TTouch Therapy!🌿

👐 We all love a massage and your dog will too. Massage has enormous benefits for dogs as they age because they tend to lose muscle tone and therefore function and mobility. Any discomfort may cause a build-up of tension and thus avoidance of certain activities, affecting the way they move, causing more tension, pain and discomfort.

Take advantage of the 🌿Dog Wellness Opening Promo🌿 we are running and book an appointment with Sabrina at Dog Essence. Other treatments that are available to assist your senior dog include 🐶Craniosacral therapy and 🐾Reiki.

Reiki and other energy healing modalities such as Pranic Healing and Sound Healing are treatments that can be used to complement any conventional veterinary treatments that your pet may be receiving, whether it be long term illness or an acute injury, or any behavioural concerns such as anxiety.

There are many benefits to any energy healing session, although they may not always be evident at first. You will notice subtle changes in your dog’s behaviour, posture and overall general health. The goal is to calm the nervous system and restore energy balance. Reiki may be helpful with the following:

🌿 Pain management
🌿 Boost the immune system
🌿 Decrease healing time after surgery or illness as the body’s natural healing process is enhanced
🌿 Remove emotional or psychological blocks that are impeding physical health
🌿 Reduce stress and promote relaxation
🌿 Enhance well-being
🌿 Anxiety
🌿 Physical injuries
🌿 Behavioural issues
🌿 Arthritis
🌿 Stomach trouble
🌿 Nervousness

Reiki is most often used as a complementary treatment that supports self-healing. It is not a substitute for your dog's conventional veterinary medicine or proper daily care practices. Remember to treat your dog’s health and well-being holistically. 🌿
