Arthritis and the pain it creates causes a change in posture due to weight shifting away from the affected joints. These limbs are ‘off-loaded’ and weaken in strength and function as they are used less. Other regions of the body are then recruited to carry more load to compensate for the off-loading, thus creating greater stress and tension on these joints. For example, a dog with painful hind limbs will carry less weight through them to avoid pain, shifting weight onto the forelimbs. The reduced use of the hindlimbs will lead to less propulsion and stability, and more stiffness. The dog’s back, forelimbs and neck will work hard to compensate to maintain the dog’s mobility. Over time this can lead to painful arthritis in these compensated joints areas.
At Dog Essence, we offer a variety of services such as Phototherapy, TTouch, Massage, and nutritional advise to assist with pain reduction and to improve and maintain mobility in your dog to support your dog to give them a better quality of life.
