Essential Oils Warning 🐱❗️

With winter upon us, our pets are spending more time indoors and we are closing our windows and doors to retain heat.
As a result, our pets are being exposed to higher concentrations of essential oil particles in the air.

Essential oils can be particularly toxic to cats, as they lack the essential enzymes in their liver to metabolise and eliminate the chemical compounds.

If pet parents wish to burn or vaporise essential oils in their homes, it is always best to use dilute solutions in well-ventilated spaces. 🕯

International Take Your Dog To Work Day is a powerful way to boost your mental health. Studies show that pets in the workplace reduce stress and anxiety quite dramatically and that this has an effect on productivity.

Things to remember:
🍵 A water bowl
🐕 A leash (for a lunchtime walk)
🚮 Take your pooch outside for regular toilet breaks and have plenty of poo bags on board
🐶 Ensure that all dogs are well socialised and that they are leashed when introducing them to each other in the office

What To Expect During a Home Euthanasia Visit 🌈

Euthanasia is a humane, and pain-free method of allowing your furry friend to go quietly into a more peaceful place. This process allows you to spend their precious last moments with them surrounded by love and companionship. 🐾❤️

By saying farewell to your pet at home you have the option to invite friends, family members and pets so that everybody can be involved. You can also choose the setting for your final moments, whether your companion is on a blanket in the garden or in the comfort of their own bed.

To enable the euthanasia process to be as peaceful as possible, often the vet will recommend that a sedative injection is given first. This allows your pet to gently fall asleep and prevents any distress from the noise of clippers, or being held by anyone other than you for the euthanasia injection.

If your pet is to have a euthanasia injection into the leg, an intravenous cannula is often placed.
Before the vet gives the injection, they will usually ask you if you are ready so that you can hold your pet in the final moments while they slip away. This usually happens quickly - often in less than a minute. The injection is not painful and if your pet has been sedated in advance then they are usually not aware of anything.

Winter Safety - Heaters 🔥

Household heaters may be comforting for pets but they can be dangerous. Not only are our furry friends at risk of overheating or burning their fur and skin, but they are in danger of smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning from both gas heaters and fireplaces. 🐱🔥

🐾 Never leave your pet alone with a heater and ensure that you consistently monitor your pet’s exposure to the heater, including keeping a safe distance and limiting the exposure time.
🐾 Install a fireguard screen around the fireplace. This will prevent burning and stop your pet from eating the ashes and ingesting any harmful toxins from fire starters.
🐾 Check for gas leakages when using a gas fireplace or heater and to ensure the damper is kept open at all times for ventilation.
🐾 Gas space heaters can be particularly dangerous to pets as they are unvented and need to be externally ventilated. Keep a window open and do not operate the heater for more than four hours at a time or in confined spaces like a bathroom or bedroom.
🐾 Ensure that all games and toys remain away from household heaters.

5 Signs of Pain in Cats 🐈⚡️

Cats are experts at masking discomfort, but knowing what to look for can make all the difference. Here's what to watch out for:

3️⃣ Behavioural changes - hissing, excessive tail flicking, increased meowing, change in facial expressions, hiding, difficulty using the litter tray, increased respiratory rate
4️⃣ Changes to function - Reluctance to jump or use stairs, disinterested in play, slow to sit or rise
5️⃣ Changes in posture and mobility - spinal hunching, crouching, loss of muscle mass, limping, lowered head or tail, change to gait

🌟 The Grave of Johnny Morehouse 🌟

One of the more unusual graves at Dayton’s Woodland Cemetery features a little boy resting beneath the paws of a large dog.

Five-year-old Johnny Morehouse was the youngest son of a cobbler in Dayton in the 1860s. He was playing with his pet dog by the Miami & Erie Canal when he fell into the water. His dog leapt in after him and tried to rescue the boy, but was unsuccessful. Johnny drowned and was buried at Woodland Cemetery. Allegedly the dog stood by the grave for weeks, waiting for Johnny and subsisting on scraps given him by sympathetic mourners.

Johnny’s story is most likely remembered because of his poignant gravestone. It depicts the little boy nestled against his dog, and surrounded by a harmonica, a cap, a ball, and a top. Visitors touched by the tender monument to the child’s death will leave behind additional gifts–the headstone is frequently covered in flowers and toys. 💐🧸

💙 The Premium Cremation 🐾
An all-inclusive package designed for families wanting to be part of their pet’s final journey. The Garden of Rest and The Comfort room are opened up to the family to say their final farewells prior to the Private cremation taking place.
The service includes collection of your pet from your home or vet clinic in one of our luxury vehicles, preparation of your pet for viewing, exclusive access to our facility for your family for the duration, a complimentary hair clipping, a clay paw impression, remembrance candle, comfort poem and a wooden or metal urn of your choice. Additionally, your pet ashes will be delivered home personally once the cremation has taken place that day or at a time and day that your family find comforting.

💙The Essential Service 🐾
This service is where your pet will be collected, privately cremated and ready to come home the same day or at a time and day that your family find comforting. It has been identified that the same day service helps families come to terms with their loss as it avoids delaying the grieving process. Furthermore, your pet will be with one of our Pet Care Specialist throughout the whole journey and will take priority when they arrive into our crematorium.

💙The Basic Service 🐾
Our Basic cremation is the most cost-effective Private Cremation. This is where your Pet is collected from your Vet Clinic and their cremation takes place within 3-5 days of arriving at our facility. Once you have organised any memorabilia that you would like for your pet, you can then collect their ashes from Passing Paws, or can arrange for the home delivery service.
