Today I got bitten by NOT A RAT! Procedure still the same for first aid. I stole this photo, I do seem to steal a lot of photos😂. It’s sharing the knowledge that helps prevent serious incidents.

In relation to yesterday‘s post about environmentally friendly rodent control, I am excited to say I will be attending Owl Friendly Rodent Management being held by Wildlife Friendly Swan! I will be talking about what happens to wild rats and wild mice that are surrendered to our rescue, holding a mini Pat-a-Rat session and bringing some examples of traps and what you can put in them! I will also be talking about what to do if you get bitten by a rat!

We never advocate for poisoning but live trapping. Our wild rats and wild mice colonies are here if you catch any. They naturally do not live more than a year so there is always room for newcomers. They are well looked after and provided a forever home.

I found this and, except for grasshoppers, it dosnt mention other protein sources like cockroaches, worms, snails or pantry moth/fly maggots. All of which I have seen devoured like it was the last one on earth. We have even had some rats that like gambusia fish in a dish of water swimming around! Real rats really fishing!!

Look at these 2 photos! DNA and genes bamboozle me and fascinate me at the same time, father and son! Deimos has too much to do and runs everywhere, no time for pats or cuddles or to sit still for a photo, whereas Ares was quite happy to let someone else do the running around! Photos taken on the same bench at Wattle Grove Vet both waiting for Dr Angela! Ares, I see you every day still, in your baby boy. A small measure of comfort knowing a little bit of you is still here 😢

We are Rats and Rainbows Small Animal Rescue. We are a not for profit rescue and fund ourselves through donations and market stalls. We are also a registered business!

We intake surrenders cost free but ask that any equipment blankets, feed, toys or water bottles could be donated at the time of surrender.

We also take in abandoned or orphaned
* baby mice,
* baby rats,
* wild baby rats and
* wild baby mice
* wild baby birds

We are able to discuss with you if you feel that you need to surrender your pet/s, or are undecided or unable to make a decision. We can assist in information or where to go for information. We can give you support, if you would like to keep your animals at home. A respite service can also be provided for a small fee, if you need to take a break.

At the moment I have guinea pigs, rats, chickens and rabbits, rainbow lorikeets and mice. After intake, new surrenders are observed and tested for suitability to rehome. While it is lovely if animals can be rehomed, we understand that some are not suitable and we offer a permanent home and care to end of life care. Some will become ambassadors or therapy pets. We provide a Small Animal Therapy Service for private clients and NDIS participants.

They all get fresh greens that we grow chemical free and fertilised by manure collected from our animals, in our own garden. We get a small amount of fruits and vegetables donated to us to supplement their base feed. We also are able to let rescues exercised on their own or in groups and sometimes free range time with the chickens!

So we have lots of experience in small animals and their care. We have a small page and a rainbow lorikeet emergency page too!

This is Sampson (Sarsaparilla didn’t fit him in the end. It sounded a bit girly) attending a therapy session in Joondalup with a client as an emotional support animal. You can see Sampson bruxing in the video with very very faint eye boggling. All looks like it’s going well and Sampson will jump into action as soon as he feels that the client is not in a content mood. Thank you Sampson you’re fantastic!

Guinea Pig Headlines!!!

I am so devastated to read about the Guinea Pigs getting eaten by prisoners. Their bodies stashed in a shed. I have permanent GP residents and honestly I thought this was one of those joke headlines. I understand some cultures eat them and some eat rats. How would you know if they have worms or mites or something else wrong with them before you eat them? Even snail farming and maggot farming have some sort of regulations for human consumption. This reminds me of colonial convicts eating wildlife to survive. My mind has exploded with a million questions. We live in a world where we shouldn’t have to eat those little lives most of us would fight to save.

First Aid Kits!Accidents happen, as in the video, try to have a rat bite first aid kit as well as a rat’s first aid kit, Pingu and Poppy are a new introduction, Poppy, I have had for some time and neither have bitten me. I believe it was in introduction process related.
