Posted • It’s difficult for us horse doctors to admit we aren’t superhuman. We’re hardwired to be there for you and your horse whenever you need us. But we’re finally in the midst of an overdue reality check as a profession and admitting that our desire to be available 24/7 isn’t compatible with our own personal health and happiness.

The most significant pain point for many of us is caring for our clients during regular business hours and then being on call for emergencies after hours. If we are a single-doctor or small practice, this traditionally has been the case most nights of the week.

The good news is that the AAEP along with private veterinary practices and veterinary schools are focused on developing new models for emergency care which ease the strain on individual practitioners. This includes the growth of emergency cooperatives where two or more practices in a geographic area work together to share after-hours care, as well as more emergency-only practices and the use of tele-triage services to address client concerns after normal business hours.

As equine veterinarians reevaluate what after-hours care looks like for their practices, we know that the support of our clients is critical to creating a balance that works for both of us. If your horse doctor talks with you about changes in how after-hours care is delivered, we hope you’ll welcome the adjustments, knowing that this evolution of emergency care must take place in order for equine veterinarians to avoid burnout and continue to be available to treat all of our patients. We appreciate our partnership with you, and your horse does too!

Great tips from Ascot Equine Vets

❄️Winter warmer tips - increasing your horse’s water intake❄️

😮Did you know that if your horse doesn’t drink enough water during cold weather, their intestinal contents may start to dry out and intestinal blockage or impaction colic may occur! Hydration is the key to preventing cold-weather colic in horses.

🌡️Research has shown that horses increased their water intake by approximately 40% each day when given warm (7-18 degree Celsius) water instead of ice-cold water. During bouts of cold weather it may therefore be necessary to add some hot water to their trough to increase the temperature!

Here are a few other tips to ensure your horse keeps drinking this winter:
💦Always provide clean, fresh water.
💦Make sure to regularly clean your horse’s water trough.
💦Keep buckets and troughs ice-free.
💦Check automatic waterers daily.
💦Wet down your horse’s feed or offer a warm soupy mash to get additional water into your horse.
💦Offer molasses water to increase water intake - provided your horse does not suffer from insulin dysregulation.

⚠️Remember to always carefully monitor water intake daily - any decrease can put your horse at risk of impaction colic.

What a fabulous day it was on Sunday 30th April 2023 with the Gidgegannup Dressage Club hosting their championship day - The Agency Autumn Dressage Festival. The sun shone and some wonderful tests were ridden across the day - massive congrats to all those who secured their invites to The Invitational 2023:

The next chances to secure an invite to the big weekend in November are this coming weekend at the DWA Hygain Pony Dressage Showcase at the State Equestrian Centre (Saturday) and at Transitions Inc. competition held at the Riverside Park grounds (Sunday). Spent a super morning with my wonderful friend Heidi and her lovely mum Neetie from @ Hermitage Dressage. We visited PHP Ferdinand ( Foundation/Bellissimo) who is almost 4 and is being beautifully ridden in by Ron Fleming from Knightwood Training Centre. Ferdi is owned by Heidi and Madison Tristram. I was so happy to see how this lovely boy is developing. Ron is doing such an amazing job.

Our Story

Penny Hill Park has developed a successful breeding program utilizing outstanding international and Australian Bloodlines. Penny Hill Park has carefully selected frozen semen from some of the greatest Stallions in the world to breed with exceptional mares. Our aim is to produce elite foals for the discerning dressage rider and provide horse training and instruction for clients.Penny Hill Park Warmblood Stud was created in 1991 with the birth of the c**t Penny Hill Park Davinci. By Leonardo 68, Davinci was groundbreaking in Australian Warmblood breeding - although bred almost 30 years ago, he was the embodiment of the modern sport horse Stallion that is being produced today. Penny Hill Park Davinci was widely recognised as such and won many accolades including the AWHA Premium C**t of Australia in 1996.

Penny Hill Park Stud was early to embrace frozen semen technology breeding one of the first frozen foals in Western Australia, Penny Hill Weltsohn by the legendary sire Weltmeyer. The stud has continued to breed mares of the highest calibre to some of the best Dressage Stallions available in the world through frozen semen insemination.

Each Mare and Stallion is carefully assessed by Michelle who is a National C**t selector and National warmblood judge , in relation to pedigree, type, movement, rideability and heritability for these traits in order to produce foals of outstanding quality.

Our focus at PHP has always been rideability and the results of our horses speak for themselves. Our mares have produced some of the top Young Dressage Horses in Australia. Kalimna Andromeda (Anamour/Kilof Mcohl) is the dam of Kalimna Emblem who was a very successful Dressage Horse. He won the 4 yo Young Dressage Horse in Queensland in 2009 and the 5yo Young Dressage Horse class at Sydney CDI in 2010. Andromeda has produced numerous outstanding horses for PHP including State Champion and Young Horse Champion Penny Hill Park Veritas who was the first Vivaldi foal born in Australia and in the Southern Hemisphere. Veritas has been included on the WA State Development Squad. Andromeda also produced PHP Sahara who was WA State Young Horse Champion under Judge General Steven Clarke. She has gone on to excel at every level and is National AWHA champion in hand and under saddle. She is currently achieving scores consistently between 72 and 75% in elementary with international 5 * judges. We are confident Sahara will be invited on to the development squad this year. Andromeda has produced many other foals that are exceptional quality and have been sold to top riders by Totilas, Charmeur. and Furstenball. Her daughter PHP Romance has produced an outstanding daughter PHP Dark Romance by Dark President and a wonderful C**t by Bonds PHP Brubeck .Andromeda`s daughter by Foundation PHP Fiorella is another star of the future.

One of our foundation mares Carrington Park Wenona has produced multi young horse champions including PHP Sophia who has one Preliminary, Novice, Elementary and Medium State Championships and was PSI Australian National 6 Year old Young Horse Champion. She is Dressage Horse of the year 2017 and 2018 and has won multiple State and National AWHA Championships both in hand and under saddle. Sophia is currently achieving scores over 73 in Advanced and has commenced competing at PSG. Sophia has been placed on the WA State development squad. Wenona`s daughter by Londonderry PHP Legacy is an exceptional mare currently in foal to Furstenball and this is a highly anticipated foal.

Our mare PHP Quebec ( Quaterback/Salute) has produced riding horses including PHP Sienna by Sir Donnerhall and PHP Fascination by Furstenball. Her rising 2 year old filly by Foundation , PHP Francesca is exceptional and we are very excited about her future.

Our Royal Hit mare Kalimna Rococo has produced a number of outstanding progeny including PHP Wisdom by Weltmeyer and PHP Bellisio by Bellisimo M. Bellisio recently produced an elite c**t foal by Foundation sold to a professional Dressage yard in WA. Rococo`s current c**t foal by Finest, PHP Firenze is a Stallion Candidate for the future.

Our mares and their progeny comprise the following bloodlines: Bellisimo M, Furst Romancier, Quaterback, Furstenball, Anamour, Foundation Salute, Scolari, Weltruhm, Quantensprung, Sir Donnerhall, Londonderry,Royal Hit, Vivaldi and Weltmeyer. Many of our fillies have been retained by the Stud or have been sold with ET breeding rights to continue to produce elite foals for Penny Hill Park through our Embryo Transfer program.

Expressions of Interest are invited for our foals or for Dressage Horses currently horses available for sale.

We also provide horse and rider education from Michelle James NCAS Coach, FEI rider and National C**t selector including the opportunity to ride on trained horses of exceptional quality for selected riders.
