Nothing good happens after loading.....there is usually a reaction straight after.
Loading can take a split second....or much longer.
The very second you see the slightest changes in their posture/body language, you need to act....quickly
Loading is in between looking and reacting, and you need to learn your own dogs subtle tells that this is exactly what they are doing.
Distraction will only work if you recognise the very subtlest of changes in your dog....when loading is just starting....but it isn't a long term solution.
Distraction is exactly what it means...a distraction, it can be needed.... and at times is helpful...but there is so much more to helping a reactive dog through their own emotional journey than just distraction.

You are better off doing a u turn (I will add a link to that in the comments shortly).

The key to reactivity really is recognising the body language, learning how it changes and acting on it....before a reaction.

The warm weather has started, and so has tick season.
Every year we hear of cases where dogs have become sick from Ticks. These days they seem to be around everywhere regardless if you are in a Tick" hot zone" or not.

Paralysis Ticks kill many dogs every year, they are a horrible little parasite that kills a dog slowly and in a torturous manner. They attach themselves to our dogs and burrow into the skin so that can get blood. In doing so they emit a lethal poison that slowly paralyses ours dogs.

Here is a blog Steve wrote some years ago that is still valid today to assist us all in getting Tick safe

Top Marks Jenn,
Lots of patience is required with Morita ,a very strong, motivated Beagle girl.Well done you have taught her to keep 4 feet on the ground now and today introducing a long lead ,she has been quite a handful for you. A short hot track at the end keeps the fun for her πŸ˜†πŸ‘πŸ€—

SUNDAY 13 AUGUST TRACKING and TRACK & SEARCH TRIAL held at Mariginiup
The 3rd last Tracking Trial in ATCs calender for this season with 1 more URBAN Track & Search Trial .

A spectacular morning ,weather cool, sunny, light easterly ,just perfect to go tracking.

Base Camp was set up by the many willing hands ,Gazebo up no walls needed today! A busy buzz of activity people ,cars ,dogs,in all directions.. then it was quiet..

Bit by bit competitors returned with a πŸ‘ or a πŸ‘Žresult, but never without a huge hug or a comiserations hug and new challenge to focus on for the πŸ‘Ž!
Blessed with the still sunnny, conditions over lunch the 2 Judges delivered individual critiques and Qualification cards ,before Base Camp was broken down packed up leaving everyone to enjoy the rest of a beautiful Sunday.

A very special THANK YOU to ATC Treasurer who without a blink, selflessly jumped in ensuring the smooth running compiling the Catalogue,Notes, some of the food ,transported the Club trailer, preparing Judges boxes, plus having her own dog entered,a heart felt thank you Glenda ,coming to my rescue.πŸ™

Our Story

ATC was formed in September 2009. ATC is a group of people, who have an interest in the dogs ability to follow a scent. A very broad topic with many aspects to pursue. Any dog of any age can participate. ATC members can also become involved in street tracking where you are taught how to read the dog whilst tracking in the suburban streets. Also taught is radio communications and map making. Most ATC members move onto trialling their dogs for both tracking dogs (bush tracking) and then when more advanced, trial for track and search, which involves street tracking. whatever level your interest extends to.

As of 2 years ago 2017 Advanced Tracking Club agreed to support another sport yet to be recognised and aproved by ANKC as a sanctioned Sport and to hold Trials.Training has been underway with positive results and a rapidly growing following.A single dog sport which does not discriminate against handler with physical limitations and dogs who have achieved all available levels in any other sport also physical and behavioural challenges. Expanding the dogs olfactory system is helpful and in concert with any Tracking Dog fitting well within the purpose of Advanced Tracking Club of WA Inc.

OBJECTIVES :To challenge the dogs and at the same time explore a variety of methods and to increase their scenting capabilities by introducing more advanced training methods .To strive to produce quality tracking and eliminate trailing at the same time. Advanced Tracking Club of WA Inc. serves as a platform to source and offer potentially suitable handlers and their dogs a volunteer role as part of Search Dogs Australia Inc. for Humanity.
