Why choose Ranch Sorting?

Handicaps and Rider Ratings - Simply Explained

Rider Rating:
When you start Ranch Sorting, you either begin as a #1, #2 or #3 rated rider. This rating is based on your experience, riding ability and prize money won in other cow horse sports.

Your rider rating can move up or down, depending on your winning vs entries ratio. This is measured biannually, and your rating will be adjusted accordingly.

Handicap:
Some classes at Ranch Sorting will be listed as a handicap event. This means the total rider rating of the team cannot exceed the handicap number.

For example:
#6 Handicap
Rider 1: #2
Rider 2: #4
Team Total: #6

The combination of your team rating doesn’t have to add up to the exact handicap number, it can be equal to or less, but it cannot exceed it.

What this means?
Some of our classes such as #2 Beginners, means only two #1 rated riders can form a team. All riders above a #1 are ineligible for this class.
This ensures there’s a dedicated class for those starting out at Ranch Sorting who may have limited experience without feeling intimidated or under pressure.

Another great aspect of the handicap system is classes listed as a higher handicap allows more experienced riders to team up with less experienced riders. This is a great opportunity to learn and develop skills and uncover potential partners. It also provides lower rated teams with more time and higher rated teams less times to level the playing field and give all riders the opportunity for success!

Don’t forget the auto draw!
Each class you enter there is the mandatory auto draw, so everyone needs you, as much as you need them. Often we see the auto draws succeed and new friendships and partnerships blossom 🌱

Ranch sorting is typically a 2-man team sorting 10 cattle numbered 0-9 and 1 unnumbered cow for a total of 11 head. A producer has the option to add 1 more unnumbered cow. A run starts with teams on opposite side of start line from cattle.
