βœ¨πŸ’› SUNDAY NIGHT PUPDATE πŸ’›βœ¨

Tonight we are checking in with Tido, a 3 year old Staffy who arrived to our care from a local pound. He has landed on all 4 paws in the most loving home, here's what his lovely family have to say!

"After losing our beloved boy earlier this year, our home wasn’t complete without a furbaby, so we went to the Dog Refuge with the intention of bringing home a dog I had seen online. To our disappointment the one I had chose was no longer available.

The staff then introduced us to Tido whom we liked and decided to adopt him.
Tido is everything we wanted such a beautiful nature and very gentle as well as being very boisterous when playing. Tido has fitted in very well and is very photogenic. I look forward to bring greeted by him every morning and also when I return from being out. Tido is brilliant, a big sook, loves to be on your lap and is really good with other dogs, if a bit too boisterous with dogs smaller than him."

How gorgeous are the model photos of Tido?! Thanks so much to his parents for adopting and loving this boy like he deserves!!

We all know self care brings us back to a balanced state but what about for your dog? πŸ’™

Dogs need to decompress too! It's an essential tool for helping your dog recover from stress and return to a calm, balanced state. Decompressing reduces cortisol and adrenaline levels, it’s especially helpful for anxious dogs, allowing them to avoid or recover from crossing their stress threshold.

Similar to how humans feel after a bad day, where minor things cause overreactions, dogs experience the same. Each new stressful experience can release more cortisol, making it harder for your dog to calm down. In this stress zone, they may enter "fight, flight, freeze, or flock" mode, making it difficult for them to think clearly.

Helping your dog decompress, especially after adopting or taking them home for foster will help the transition period from kennel life to home life an incredible amount! Our top tips are do less, chill out with your dog and offer your dog calming activities in a relaxed space 🐢🐾

My name is Riley πŸ’œ

I am a Heeler mix, looking for a calm household with gentle, experienced owners.
I am feeling very scared at the moment, I need owners who understand that I need time to warm up to new people.

The trainers here say once I am comfy I'm a little love bug! Having a really polite doggy brother in the home would definitely help with my confidence. Being a Heeler mix I will need lots of daily exercise and mental stimulation, hikes would be so fun once I'm feeling a bit more confident.

πŸ’œ If you have experience with fearful dogs and can offer me lots of gentle and patient love, please pop in an application for me here: https://www.dogshome.org.au/our-dogs/21530/

You HAVE to come meet Cheezle πŸ˜†πŸ€©πŸ€ͺ

This caption will never do him justice. He takes the cake for silliest pooch at the Refuge. He is truly committed to untying all shoe laces and surprise WWE take downs of kennel hands. For this reason and his undying love of wrestling he isn't suited to seniors.

Cheezle is honestly hilarious, we ADORE him! He does listen really well and is only silly when he's super bored (like stuck in a kennel), once he's out and about he is such a good boy!!! He is very loving, playful, may suit a family home with sturdy older kids and could live with another dog.

If you love 36kg puppies and don't mind a dog that will launch his body into you in the most loving way, Cheezle is the one for you!!

It's National Wills Week πŸ’™

Every year thousands of dogs are left abandoned, lost and unwanted in WA pounds or surrendered by owners who are unable or unwilling to provide for them.

We rely solely on the generosity of the community to sustain our operations. Bequests given by animal lovers in their Will have long been a vital source of funding for us and have been the only way to maintain and upgrade our ageing facilities and build new accommodation to support the dogs who come into our care.

Any gift left in your Will is gratefully received and creates a brighter future for homeless hounds.

When the senior dog trainer says this is the nicest dog he's ever met, you RUN to meet her!

Scott has met his fair share of dogs (probably thousands a year 🀣🀣🀣) so this is a big call, I immediately had to see who he was talking about. I'm happy to say he was not wrong, Ruby is a DEVINE! πŸ’ž

She is a 2.5 year old Mastiff who is pretty much perfect, she is the sweetest dog, loves affection, is well mannered, loves everyone she meets! She'd likely suit a home with young children and another dog companion too!

Ruby is so sweet she ticks all the boxes but just know if you take her for a walk she will be saying hello to every single human along the way πŸ₯°πŸ₯°πŸ₯°

Daisy C's foster period is sadly up! πŸ’ž

We'd LOVE to find her a home ASAP so she doesn't have to spend long in kennels after her amazing foster period. This gorgeous girl is a 3.5 year old Boxer x Staffy and she has received the most wonderful feedback! She is ticking all the boxes, okay with cats, shares the home with another dog and is a couch potato!!!

Her foster carer says:
"Daisy is the sweetest gentle giant. Getting on well with cats and other dogs, she is wonderfully mild mannered and easy going dog. Daisy is such a lovable goofball and perfect family member, she doesn't chew or destroy things she shouldn't! Wanting nothing more than cuddles and food, she is ready to lavish her potential forever family with all her furry love. Daisy would be fine for full-time workers if given the time to settle in. She would be great with families with children 10+, a doggy sibling may also be great to engage her playful side."

R U OKAY DAY! πŸ’›πŸ’›πŸ’›

A conversation could change a life! Most of our conversations are with dogs 🀣

Here at the Refuge we are SO lucky to be surrounded by dogs who really are the best company, the best listeners and the most amazing source of joy. Dog companionship can have such a positive effect on our wellbeing, studies show that dogs reduce stress, anxiety and depression; ease loneliness; encourage exercise and improve our overall health.

Does your dog love the ball so much they find it hard to switch off? 🎾

It's quite common for dogs to become obsessed with balls as chasing the ball mimics their instinctual prey drive, which makes them feel great but can have mental and physical strain if this is overdone!

A ball-obsessed dog often struggles to focus on their owner outside of waiting for the ball to be thrown as well as, it prevents natural, enriching behaviours like sniffing, which help dogs stay calm.

Here are some tips to help or prevent ball obsession in dogs! Let us know if you've experienced this with your dog before! 🐢🐾

Foster dog of the week: Capricorn β™‘οΈπŸ’œ

Capricorn is a 4.5 year old Mastiff who arrived to our care from a local pound, she's currently having the best time in foster care and as you can tell by the pictures, LOVES a good snooze πŸ˜†πŸ˜†

Capricorn's foster carers say: "Capricorn will make a great addtion to a family, especially if you have older children. She is always keen for attention and to be with you, Capricorn is very respectful, trusting and gentle. She loves a walk and is VERY keen to meet other dogs. Capricorn is very sweet and cuddly. ADOPT A BONDED PAIR πŸ‘―β€β™€οΈ

If you're a big dog lover, we have the perfect pair for you!! Rollo and Ragnar are two of the most gentle giants we've ever had to pleasure of caring for!

They are sensitive boys who have not had the best start to life, they arrived in a very poor condition and need an extra gentle family for them to feel safe with.
Ragnar is a little more fearful, he's 3 years 8 months and Rollo is his younger brother 2 years 8 months.

The boys are able to make doggy pals but for now they'd prefer to stick to quiet areas while they get more comfortable with their new situation. Rollo and Ragnar need a little extra TLC but will repay you in kisses and cuddles a plenty, so what do you think? Are these the boys for you?

Introducing Lilo D! πŸ’œ

Little miss Lilo an absolutely divine English Staffy who is in need of a new home and fresh start. Unfortunately she was not getting along with her former bestie (another female dog) which is why she finds herself here. Lilo has successfully shared a home with a male dog and doesn't cope well alone so we are on the hunt for a boy best friend!

Lilo may suit a home with retired person/s looking for a devoted companion dog too as a nice and quiet place would be good for her. She is SUCH a sweetheart and will make the best of family members once settled into her new life πŸ’œπŸ’œ

The Weekly Canine Count! 🐾

Last night we shared our gorgeous adoption photos which is such a highlight of our week! We do feel it's important to share the behind the scenes and the truth of that being on most weeks we are intaking more dogs than are being adopted.

What is even more heartbreaking is that fact that we could be doubling that number if we had more space, more resources and more adoptions. It's not only us going through this, the whole of WA is in a homeless dog crisis!

Majority of our followers are rescue dog lovers and agree that adopting is the way to go so we need your help to spread the message to others! To consider adopting and desex your pets!

It's National Wills Week πŸ’™

As a self-funded organisation, our Home relies solely on the generosity of the community to sustain our operations. Bequests given by animal lovers in their Will have long been a vital source of funding for us and have been the only way to maintain and upgrade our ageing facilities and build new accommodation to support the dogs who come into our care.

As we continue to push further and go to more extreme lengths to save dogs in need, our veterinary and operational costs continue to rise.

We spend every single dollar that we are lucky enough to receive thoughtfully and frugally, the simple truth of our organisation is that we are here for the long haul to save dogs, just as we have been for over 89 years, and just as we intend to continue to do for many many more decades.

Gifts in Wills help to secure our future, maintain and upgrade our ageing facilities and ensure hundreds of dogs, both now and in the future, will benefit from your love and kindness.

βœ¨πŸ’›SUNDAY NIGHT PUPDATE TIME πŸ’›βœ¨

"We adopted Cash in February. We knew we didn’t want a puppy, we wanted to make the life of an older dog better. But we had no idea how much better he would make our lives!

Cash is five years old and settled in quite quickly, due in large part to the love he got from his foster family. During a consultation with Dr Kate at Kalmpets about Cash’s leash reactivity, we learned that we were Cash’s fourth home and he’d been at the Refuge twice. We were already in love with him but then we REALLY understood him and promised he’d always get love when he asked.
He is such an amazing dog, loves everyone, and is brilliantly behaved in the house. We can leave him by himself and when we come back we generally find that he’s asleep in the hallway chair. He speaks to us in cute grunty noises, little whines, growly sounds, woowoowoos, and when he really wants to make a point, loud woofs. We can have entire conversations with him.

To anyone looking to adopt – consider an older doggy. There is no puppy chaos and the wonderful staff and volunteers at DRH will match you with a dog that suits your lifestyle. And you’ll know you’re giving a great life to a dog who through no fault of its own has ended up homeless. There is no better feeling than being loved by a dog who so deserves a family that loves them, and has been waiting for that home so patiently.

Huge thanks to everyone at DRH who helped us find this wonderful dog! And to Dr Kate from Kalmpets and Sharon from Wolfies Dog Training who have trained us (the dog was fine, we needed work) and given us the confidence to give Cash his best life in his fur-ever home."

Long termer Doug is LOVING life his foster home!!

His foster carer say's if she didn't work away he would definitely be a foster fail. He is easy to walk, with no pulling, loves to sniff his way around. Has no negative reactions to any dogs, even if they are yapping at him. She say's Doug is a pleasure to have in the home! He is wary of new men and previously felt overwhelmed in a busy household, a home with a single person is just perfect for this boy 🏑

It took us about 2 seconds to fall in love with Dovah 😍

This little guy (16kgs) is a 10 month old friendly pooch who travelled down from Kalgoorlie in search of a fresh start. He was surrendered for being too high energy for his previous owner so he needs an active home.

He was microchipped as an American Bulldog but we have our doubts πŸ˜‚ Dovah is easily motivated, very well mannered and takes treats soo gently. He is super cuddly and playful and such a joy to be around. He may suit a home with children or another dog companion pending meets and greets 🐾

Visit us today to meet him, he truly is the best!
