📣 IMPORTANT SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT 📣

At Foothills Animal Hospital, we love caring for your pets and we strive to always provide a safe working environment.

We place the safety of our valued clients and their pets alongside with our team as our highest priority.

We sadly had a traumatic incident last week, where two of our team members, a Veterinarian and a Nurse, suffered a severe and unprovoked dog attack, one of them requiring emergency surgery for a broken bone. They were fortunate to receive excellent medical care and are now thankfully recovering, however, this incident has highlighted again the importance of our safety.

At our hospital we help many large, unsociable and aggressive dogs that present a danger to our team. These dogs often do not venture outside their properties, nor do they encounter other dogs or people. It is important for the owners of these dogs to understand the stress a vet visit can cause. Due to the unpredictable nature of our interactions, we need the Owners of these pets to have full control of their animals while visiting our hospital including the carpark and particularly in the small confines of their consult room where a pet is more likely to feel trapped and stressed.

With this in mind we would like to share our hospital guidelines to help minimise the risks associated with working with animals.

• Please understand the risks we take at work and never be dismissive of a team member that is careful around your pet, until we know your pet, we might be cautious and that is ok.

• Never dismiss a Vet or a Nurse that is cautious around your pet, they might have had a traumatic experience in the past.

• When making an appointment, please advise if you have any concerns about your pet’s past behaviour and experience at home or in a public setting. We will tailor your pet’s care to ensure they feel comfortable and at ease.

• A friendly pet can behave very differently at the vets as fear overrides their trust.

• Please warn us if a pet is likely to bite or has snapped in the past.

• We ask that you bring all dogs likely to bite muzzzled, and to call ahead so that we can plan your visit in the safest manner.

• Chat to our team about calming pills for your pets to reduce their fear and make our interactions safer.

• Help us by always having your pet on a leash whilst at our hospital or safely contained in a pet carrier.

• Always present your pet with the most capable handler and never send a pet to the hospital with a minor.

• Our team will always advocate for your pet. If at any time during your visit with us, a team member advises that we need to stop what we are doing, please understand that this is in the best interests of your pet.

• If you fail to disclose the risk, you are putting our team directly in harm’s way and can be held responsible.

Our team are trained to handle pets with compassion, aiming for a fear-free experience that fosters a positive and reassuring atmosphere. We implement various measures to provide a high standard of care whilst keeping our patients’ stress levels to a minimum.

PLEASE HELP KEEP OUR TEAM SAFE SO THAT WE CAN BE AVAILABLE TO KEEP CARING FOR YOUR TREASURED PETS.

Thank you,
Foothills Animal Hospital 🐾

DENTAL MONTH BEHIND THE SCENES 🦷🪥

When your pet has a dental at Foothills, they have a full general anaesthetic as set up for a small patient below! The set up includes:

🦷monitoring equipment for heart rate, pulse rate, carbon dioxide levels, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, temperature & respiration rate - this is monitored by our highly skilled nursing team and the veterinarian for the duration of the procedure which is recorded and charted on our iPad system.
🦷 the anaesthetic circuit to provide oxygen and clear carbon dioxide for the patient through a scavenger system whilst also providing the maintenance anaesthetic drug during the procedure.
🦷 dental equipment and lighting to make sure we get all of the nitty gritty bits from the teeth and includes all the tools we need to remove, probe, scale and polish the teeth!
🦷 dental X-rays (set up behind the door in the background!)
🦷 a Bair hugger and blankies to keep your pet warm during their procedure

We also wanted to share a before and after of another patient who had a scale and polish! Just LOOK at the results!!!!

Dental month is this August at Foothills so call us to book in!

BEFORE & AFTER a scale & polish!

All month we are highlighting the importance of dental care in pets and doing what we can to incentivise families to get their pet into clinic for an oral health assessment and treatment.

Early intervention saves a lot of money down the track by keeping teeth in good condition with regular scale and polishes once indicated and by using products approved by the Vet Oral Health Committee (some of our favourite are OxyFresh and the Hills T/D diets!). If we look after our pets teeth, we will less likely need to extract teeth as your pet ages.

When your pet comes into Foothills for a dental, every single tooth is probed and charter prior to starting the scale and polish - this helps guide our veterinarians on taking dental radiographs and can indicate tooth health. You can even take the chart home with you!

To receive $100 off your pets scale and polish - book in this month.

Puppy school enrolment details are below:

Next classes start August 27!

Dogs United Training Academy puppy school was thoughtfully designed by a vet (Dr Rachel!) and an IMDT trainer (Jules!) meaning your puppy (and you!) are in the best hands to start this very exciting journey together.

Puppy school is a brilliant way to socialise your puppy, build a strong connection with one another and start your training journey together.

Already done puppy high school? Start high school and keep building that bond and mastering new skills ❤️

Show us your dogs as puppies in the comments below!!

Come join all the puppy fun at Dogs United!

At Dogs United we strive to provide a wonderful start to your life with your new puppy!

This is an important time in your puppy's life, a time where their first experiences help set them up for success later in life.

As a veterinarian I see a lot of puppies and the biggest mistake people make is to think that their puppy won't benefit from classes because they live with another dog or they wait until after the last vaccination to book. EVERY puppy will benefit from a well run early class regardless of vaccination status or lifestyle, this is a SUPER important time in a puppy's development and you only get that opportunity once in their lifetime.

We offer both preschool and high school courses that cater to puppies of different ages, located in a large, clean, warm, dry HALL.

If you have a puppy and want to get off to a great start contact us today and we can guide you to the best course option.

August classes:

#1 Preschool Tuesday 27th August 6pm - central Armadale High - FULL

#2 High School Tuesday 27th August 7.15pm - central Armadale - FULL

NEXT CLASSES START 24th Sept

Some dentals require x-rays for us to determine tooth health at the root and help determine whether we are required to extract a tooth or whether or not it is able to stay in our patients mouth!

When your pet has a dental with us, every tooth is probed and charted before we determine which teeth require X-rays and may need to come out (hopefully none!).

Our thorough vets then scale and polish each individual tooth!

All of this is done under general anaesthesia, monitored by our thorough and experienced nurses. Plus all of our patients having anaesthetic will have intravenous fluid therapy as part of their procedure!

More questions? Call us! Our team will help wherever we can 🦷🐶🐾

We had this cute little microbat handed in to our clinic after being attacked by some birds on the road.

We x-rayed him and gave him the appropriate environment with correct nutrition as well as some subcutaneous fluids before he was transferred to a registered carer.

This is possible through our CAREfund which accepts donations that go back to our community and wildlife.

Dr Julia was amazing with this little guy and we hope he makes a full recovery and is back in his home soon 🌿🦇

Please note: these precious creatures MUST be handled safely to avoid possible zoonotic disease transfer and should always be placed in the care of experienced carers who know how to keep them safe.

Did someone say Skinny Dog Roo Twist?! 14 year old Holly was loving her roo twist! Holly is nurse Keely’s border collie 🐶

Best suited for medium to large dogs these roo twists are excellent dental chews that are naturally dried and intentionally have the fur kept on!

Why?
🐾 fur is a natural fibre addition to pets diets and can help to bulk stool up which in turn keeps the GI tract environment healthy and functioning well
🐾 fur removal is reliant on chemicals and skinny dog treats are natural, chemical free snacks for your fur family

Skinny dog treats are a fab addition to any pets diet and we are happy to recommend the most suitable treat varieties for your pet! We especially love them for enrichment and to help keep pearly whites shining! 🧠🦷

Why are fear free and low stress visits so important?

🌿 fear, anxiety and stress can change the physiological state of your pet which can impact their physical exam (increased heart rate, breathing changes, altered temperature) which can complicate diagnostic or treatment processes

🌿 pets who are worried or anxious may not tolerate a physical exam

🌿a relaxed pet means a relaxed owner

🌿we want your pets to feel safe and secure in clinic

Tips for helping your pets feel happy in clinic
❣️ start at home by using Feliway or Adaptil (or asking our team for a bandana with the calming pheromone on it when you arrive in reception)

❣️ ask to use our garden if you’re visiting with a nervous dog

❣️ make use of happy visits and use treats or other positive reinforcers to associate vet visits with something good!

❣️ speak to our vets about pre visit anxiety medications and how these help your pets cope in clinic

❣️ book at quieter times to help reduce trigger stacking of a busy reception area in pets who are overwhelmed with busy spaces

❣️ build positive associations at home with your cats carrier to reduce an extra stressor and provide them a safe space

We love your pets like we love our own and we want them to feel safe and happy at Foothills 🌿

Medical spotlight on dental care 🦷🪥

One of the most common procedures we do at Foothills are dental procedures.

These procedures are done under general anaesthesia where we are able to probe and assess every single tooth in your pets mouth, take radiographs, scale and polish teeth and remove any non-viable teeth.

This is one of our recent dental procedures BEFORE & AFTER! Look how pearly white the teeth are now!

It is important to keep your pets oral health in tip top shape for many reasons:
🦷 poor oral health and sore teeth can impact quality of life and ability to eat comfortably
🦷keeps breath fresh
🦷reduces pain or discomfort associated with affected teeth
🦷 reduces bacterial load in the mouth and can enter the bloodstream and affect other organs and body systems
🦷 keeps gingivitis at bay
🦷 regular dental care leads to reduced likelihood of dental extractions

If your pet needs a dental check, please contact our lovely team on 9497 7488 and we can help get your pets teeth pearly white!

We had the privilege of seeing many senior pets in June and one of the most common concerns pet owners had was arthritis in their pets.

Arthritis can impact quality of life and so it is important to recognise early on if your pet is struggling with joint pain. Early intervention is key in slowing down the disease process!

We have put together some key signs in our feline and canine family members that can help you assess your pets joint health by observation!

As we head into the chilly weather these signs can become more obvious.

If you are concerned about your pets joint comfort or changes in mobility, please contact the clinic for your pets vet assessment today 🦴🐱🐶🐈🐕

You can make your appointment online through our website or by calling us on 9497 7488.

We wish Dr Dahlia all the best and we cannot wait to squeeze her new little one when they arrive.
