This week we had the pleasure of hosting Alex Lovel, a final year vet student from Murdoch University, for a week of work placement. Alex embraced the full Ascot Equine experience — from morning rounds to hands-on cases — and left with growing confidence in his clinical skills.

Here’s what he had to say about his time with us:
🗨️ "A big thank you to the team at Ascot Equine for having and supporting me over the last week. I really enjoyed my time here and feel a lot more comfortable with the clinical skills needed to be an equine vet. A special thank you to Dr Freddie for teaching me all his skills."

We love supporting the vets of the future and sharing our knowledge and experience with the next generation. Thanks for your enthusiasm and hard work this week, Alex — we wish you all the best for your final year and future as a veterinarian! 👨‍⚕️🐴✨

🔍 Not All Colic Is the Same

We recently treated a horse presenting with classic signs of 🤕 colic and 🌡️ fever — two red flags that had us thinking peritonitis might be to blame.

🧫 Peritonitis refers to inflammation of the peritoneal (abdominal) lining and can be primary (spontaneous infection) or secondary (due to things like a ruptured gut or penetrating injury).

Here in WA, we not uncommonly see primary peritonitis caused by Actinobacillus species — just like in this case.

📸 Swipe to see a comparison of normal peritoneal fluid vs the brown, turbid fluid collected on admission, which later cultured Actinobacillus in the lab.

💊 Thanks to prompt supportive care — including antimicrobials and anti-inflammatories — this patient is feeling much better!

💡 Take-home message: If a horse has colic signs and a fever, it’s worth digging a little deeper. Peritoneal fluid analysis can be lifesaving.

🕵️‍♀️ Yard Inspectors: Honey & Luna on Duty 🕵️‍♀️
Operation: Fresh Sand Sniff
Test Status: COMPLETE ✅

Our top inspectors were quick to notice something was afoot in the yards… 🧐 A fresh layer of white sand? Time to investigate. Thorough sniffing, a few paw prints, and a small case of the zoomies later—their professional assessment is in:
“Excellent work, Scott. Smells clean. Feels fancy. Looks fabulous.” 👌🐾 (Thumbs up in the final photo for those who doubt their credentials)

Thanks to for the top-notch sand delivery! Even the toughest critics are impressed.👌

Fresh yards, fresh season!

A huge thank you to Scott from , who put in a massive day today topping up our hospital yards with beautiful white sand. While Scott has been managing our manure removal for some time, this is the first time he’s tackled the sand refresh — and we’re seriously impressed with the quality of his work and service so far.

He’ll be back again tomorrow for round two, and we can’t wait to see the end result. The yards are already looking fantastic and will be perfect for our patients as we head into breeding season 🐴💨

🛻💨 Another defensive driving course done and dusted!

This week it was Dr Anika and Nurse Eeva’s turn behind the wheel. While our vets are often the ones driving between consults, our amazing nurses also take the wheel — helping keep things moving and giving our vets time to catch up on billing, comms, and case notes between visits.

A big thank you once again to the team at Performance Driving Australia for equipping our team with the skills to stay safe on the road! 👏

You might have noticed our vets donning some unusual headwear lately… 🏒🩺
No, we haven’t taken up a new winter sport (although we definitely have enough helmets now to field an ice hockey team 😅). These helmets are all about safety — because when you work with unpredictable patients weighing 500kg+, a little extra protection can make a big difference.

We love what we do, and we love our horses — but we love our team’s safety even more. Helmets might not be glamorous, but they help keep us in one piece so we can keep showing up for your horses 💪💙

Welcome Dr. Liz Walmsley! 👩‍⚕️🐴

Dr. Liz Walmsley joined the Ascot Equine Vets team at the end of April, so some of you may have already had the chance to meet her!

Liz is a Registered Specialist in Equine Surgery and brings an incredible depth of experience to the practice. After graduating in 2005, she completed a surgical internship at Scone Equine Hospital before spending over a decade at the University of Melbourne, where she trained specialists, taught vet students, and managed a complex surgical and lameness caseload.

Liz has also worked extensively in private practice, with a strong focus on lameness and emergency surgery, particularly in performance horses across a range of disciplines.

With her calm expertise and passion for diagnostics and equine care, Liz is a fantastic addition to our team. We’re thrilled to have her on board! 👏

Our History

Ascot Equine Veterinarians was founded in 2006 by Dr Julia Vines and Dr Kim Rose. Julia and Kim aspired to provide a greater depth of quality equine veterinary care to the horse community of Western Australia. The practice has since grown over the years into one of the leading equine veterinary hospitals in Western Australia. In July 2018, Dr Pete Harding and Dr Annemarie Cullimore took over the reins with a view to continuing Julia and Kim’s legacy and further developing the practice. Pete and Annemarie are specialists in their respective fields of interest, Equine Surgery (Pete) and Equine Internal medicine (Annemarie) and are committed to providing the highest quality of veterinary care available in our industry.
