This summer, we’ve got a few ideas for keeping your dog cool and content! β˜€οΈπŸΆ

When leaving your dog at home on a hot day, as well as making sure they always have access to water and a cool, well-ventilated area (such as an air-conditioned room or a large shady area with a fan), you could consider keeping them busy and comfortable with:
βœ”οΈ A shallow paddling pool
βœ”οΈ A frozen treat (look up dog-safe popsicle recipes online, or just freeze some of their favourite treats in water or meat broth)
βœ”οΈ A safe long-lasting chew treat and a pet cooling mat to lie on

For more information on keeping pets safe in hot weather, consult our helpful team.

Myth: a dog with a wagging tail is friendly and wants to interact. πŸ•

While a wagging tail can often mean that a dog is feeling sociable and friendly, this isn’t always the case!

β€œTail flagging” is a movement that looks similar to wagging, as it involves an upright tail vibrating back and forth. However, flagging tends to signify that a dog is feeling agitated or overaroused, meaning that any further interaction could provoke an aggressive response. Additionally, dogs may also wag their tails even if they are feeling unsure.

For more sensitive cats, any changes in their environment (such as an owner spending more time away, a new pet, a move to a new home, or a neighbourhood cat encroaching upon their territory) can lead to significant stress. 🐱

However, compared to dogs, the feline signs of stress tend to be more subtle and may be easily missed.

Stressed cats may show symptoms such as:
βœ”οΈ Hiding more
βœ”οΈ A reduced appetite
βœ”οΈ Inappropriate toileting (weeing or pooing around the house)
βœ”οΈ Overgrooming
βœ”οΈ Increased miaowing

If you notice any similar symptoms in your cat, we’d advise an assessment with our feline-friendly vets. πŸ’š

With separation anxiety affecting around a quarter of dogs, it’s useful to know the signs to watch out for in your pet. 🐢

Dogs can be more prone to developing separation anxiety if their owner has had to return to work after a period of holiday leave, maternity leave, or a job change.

The most problematic symptoms of separation anxiety in dogs tend to be:
βœ”οΈ Destructive behaviours (e.g. chewing or clawing at walls or furniture)
βœ”οΈ Weeing or pooing in the house
βœ”οΈ Excessive barking/howling/whining

If you notice any of these symptoms in your pet, it’s best to seek help from our behaviourally-brainy team ASAP. πŸ’›

Dog bites crush and tear the skin by design, so even small bites can be much bigger and more damaging than they first appear, and can get infected fast ⚠️.

Early cleaning and antibiotics reduce the risk of abscesses and complications 🩹. Don’t wait; fast treatment leads to faster healing πŸ•.

πŸš‘ See us promptly if your dog’s been bitten.
