Angus is the best little worker who unfortunately suffered with intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) which left him paralysed (grade 5) in the hind limbs despite surgery. His dedicated mum brings him to us once a week to stay for the day, where we can work intensively through a combination of therapies designed to give him the best chance possible to get back on his feet. Please consider sharing this post so more people know there are options available for neuro rehabilitation. ❤️ 🐾
Happy graduation Bella! 🎓🐾 she presented to us with hemiparesis (partial paralysis of her left front and back leg) after falling from a bed. She has been working very hard to get back to her normal life. Despite a very slight drag of her left front leg (likely due to chronic nerve damage) she is pain free and without medication. Well done Bella and family! ❤️
🎓 Happy graduation Benji! He originally presented to us 3 months post spinal surgery still unable to walk and without feeling in one leg. After 8 weekly sessions he regained his ability to walk and has continued to work on his strength since. He’s taken a few months off seeing us to see if his gains could be maintained in regular life and were happy that with a few minor tweaks he’s been able to graduate! Well done Benji and family ❤️🐾
Buddy came to us 1 month after spinal surgery as he hadn’t regained use of his hind limbs. After just 10 days of rehab he managed a few wobbly steps and is now graduating and back to his normal activity! Well done Buddy and family for all your hard work, despite some dachshund stubbornness 😅
Eddie graduated with us last week. He’s been seeing us for conservative management of multiple IVDD flares causing spinal pain and ataxia. This little star is the perfect patient who loves both his massages and active exercises. His dedicated mum has been working with us to increase his spinal stability and core strength through a combination of medication, manual therapies and exercises. Well done Eddie, it’s always a pleasure to work with you 🐾⭐️
Ellie Mae has been seeing us for intensive day stay rehab following a C4/5 (neck) spinal fracture repaired by @mark_at_vetsurg She has been relearning movements, initially unable to get up from her side, she is now attempting to get into a sit and pushing up to stand with assistance. These patients can be very challenging to offer correct and safe support to their healing fractures while still needing to get their bodies moving. Her right side is weaker than the left but we are hopeful with more work and time it will become stronger. Each day is a testament to Ellie’s (and her owners) strength and perseverance. We are grateful for every bit of progress along this challenging but transformative journey ❤️🐾
✨ Neuroplasticity ✨ the ability of the nervous system to adapt and reorganise through targeted motor learning following injury. Tessa is recovering from hind limb paralysis following a non-surgical spinal injury. Placing her feet in a walking pattern (gait patterning) helps recreate these neuro pathways. With some creative DIY we have tied a theraband to increase resistance and provide sensory feedback. The aim is to continue using the band between sessions for walks at home also.
DID YOU KNOW - if your dog has fluffy paws it is difficult for them to grip and can increase their chances of slips and falls? 🐾Think of it like running in the house with your socks on. 🐾This may make your dog hesitant to use certain flooring or walk abnormally as they try to get traction, especially if they are elderly or recovering from an injury. 🐾Check your dogs feet tonight as a quick & simple way to help their overall mobility
Mr Pickles regained movement in his hindlimbs this week and enough strength to take some wobbly steps all on his own! 🐾 He has been seeing us weekly for 2 months for conservative (non-surgical) management of suspected IVDD causing grade 5 hindlimb paralysis
Graduation day for Rogue! 🎓 She was referred by @kalmpets to assess for underlying causes of her anxiety and reduced exercise tolerance after no abnormalities had been found on radiographs. Her exam revealed:🐾 Lumbar spine pain with tight bands in the overlying muscle and fascia. 🐾 Cervical spine pain with significant reduction in movement to the side. 🐾 Pain and reduced range of motion of her R knee and L hip with secondary muscle tension. Through a combination of medication, targeted laser and massage therapy, and a personalised home exercise program Rogue has graduated with pain-free normal function after just 5 clinic visits over 3 months. Her owners describe her as a totally different dog, so happy and playful now and no longer fearful or reactive to touch. What a great feeling!
DID YOU KNOW sometimes rubbing the tail of a dog with a spinal injury can help with improve movement of the limbs? This action stimulates nerves within the spinal cord which initiates an excitatory stimulus that can be used to help retrain motor function. Pretty cool right? (Please note Tia is being fully supported by the harness and not being lifted by her tail)
