Happy Graduation to Baloo & Winston! These two boys (and their families) have been working very hard to improve their mobility.
🐾 Baloo has been suffering with hip dysplasia since a puppy and had atrophy of the supporting muscles.
🐾 Winston also has hip arthritis but had been overusing his muscles which resulted in compensatory spinal pain and hamstring tension

We’re very pleased they are both back to normal pain free lives ❤️

Our team have been sharing this research with you since Dr Khan presented at ANZCVS Science Week 2022, and are excited to share it’s publication (free to read) in the link below 🤓

Over the past couple of years, some of you may have heard of the Cambridge Vet School non-surgical IVDD study. The results have just been published. It’s a great write-up and quite groundbreaking!

Dogs unable to walk due to disc extrusion (IVDD) were cared for WITHOUT surgery. They had an MRI scan at the start of the study and another MRI scan after 12 weeks. These scans helped to make the diagnosis, and they also showed how compressed (squashed) the spinal cord was in each case.

The big questions were:
❓How many of these dogs would start walking again without having had surgery?
❓How compressed was each dog’s spinal cord at the start of the study?
❓Were they still just as compressed at the end of the study, 12 weeks later?

Results were interesting and included the following:
✅Out of the dogs that had deep pain sensation, NEARLY ALL of them (49 of 51 dogs, 96%) started walking again within 12 weeks. Most of them walked much sooner than this.
✅Out of those with NO deep pain sensation, nearly half of them (10 of 21 dogs, 48%) started walking again within 12 weeks. That’s WITHOUT surgery.
✅Spinal cord compression reduced in some dogs over the 12 week study period. That’s despite not having had surgery to remove the disc material that caused this compression.
✅Many dogs started walking again despite the fact that their spinal cord was still compressed, ie ‘Recovery was not dependent on the resolution of compression’

💛The authors concluded that if spinal surgery isn’t possible as it’s not available in the area or is too expensive, non-surgical management is a valid alternative.

There’s plenty of detail in the write-up, and it’s free for all to read or download via this link: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/jvim.17149

Billie is our first graduate for 2024. She presented for assessment of an intermittent right hind lameness that was thought to be related to bilateral grade 2 luxating patellae.

On examination, in addition to her luxating patellae, a few arthritic joints and secondary fascial tension and sacroiliac joint pain, we identified a thickened right calcaneal tendon and a painful gastrocnemius which were more significantly affecting her gait.

With a targetted and progressive manual and physical therapy program she is now comfortable and moves consistently without lameness even if she goes for a sup or crazy run at the park 🥳.

Gearing up for the we proudly announce our favourite Jimmy’s graduation from his program! He presented with a six month history of left hind lameness mid 2022, and had numerous causes of this symptom identified on palpation at his initial assessment that were confirmed with advanced imaging. He has had specialist surgery and of course to get him to his optimal level of function, and we couldn’t be prouder of his achievements!! It has been a long hard road to get him to this point and SO worthwhile 🥳 Well done Jimmy 👑 we will miss you!

Committed to continuing education to bring the best care we can to your pets.

Kara travelled to Brisbane last week to complete a 4 day hands on course with Canine Rehabilitation Institute. She then travelled to the Gold Coast where she met up with Dr Yoko for the annual Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVS) Science Week conference.

We ran a pre-conference practical workshop on laser and shockwave therapy and were so lucky to have such amazing speakers, even coming from the USA to share their knowledge with us.

Dr Yoko established the ANZCVS chapter in Veterinary Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation (VSMR) and is the currently the chapter President and Science Week Convenor. She and her “partner in crime” Jane from Paws in Motion Veterinary Physiotherapy were also recognised for their hard work at the annual conference dinner!

Clever little Bella is recovering from and learning new tricks along the way to help make her stronger. Here she is working on her spine flexibility as well as coordination by weaving through the cones and stepping over the pole.

Corrina is this week’s because she graduated from her program. She has and can’t tolerate certain types of pain relief, but is also on various medications that mean she can’t be dispensed other types of pain relief . Her don’t show all of her gains, but they are listed in the text. Of note: she is no longer in pain, is stronger and her joint are all back to normal. Additional, her was a grade 3 to start and is now a grade 2 (more stable, no need for surgery)! We used a combination of targeted and provided with an to achieve our goal of making her and as possible. She is back to enjoying her walks at the park again and running her household 🥳🧑‍🎓

Kora is our most recent graduand 🥳. She started her journey with us as a 3.5 month old two weeks after she had her cast removed following a left sustained four weeks before the cast was put on. are tricky at the best of times, especially in - Kora’s vets had done a great job of everything and referred her to ensure she had every chance of returning to . She started with pain and reduced extension in multiple joints as well as significant ; but by the time she graduated earlier this month, she had even thigh size and normal muscling, full and comfortable range of motion in her hind limb joints and was off all medication! Congratulations to Kora and her family for all their hard work, 🥳 it had paid off and will maximise her for years to come 😎
