Thursday Theory....A reminder on the prevention of antibiotic resistance.

Here's a few handy tips from Dr Wendy Vaala, VMD, Dipl. ACVIM on this important topic...

1. Do all you can to prevent disease and therefore antibiotic use.
If horses don’t get sick, there’s no pressure to use them.

2. Reserve antibiotics for bacterial infections.
Antibiotics don’t work on viruses or other non-infectious inflammatory conditions.

3. Get (and follow) your vet's advice regarding proper antibiotic protocol. ie the correct type, dose, and duration of prescribed treatment for any horse’s particular condition.

And finally a list of "never-dos" that can guide you in proper and effective antibiotic use...

🐴Never use one horse’s antibiotic on another horse. The mechanism or dosage might be inappropriate or the horse’s condition inaccurately assumed.
🐴Never stop giving the antibiotic before the prescribed end of treatment. It takes a certain amount of time for the targeted bacteria to succumb to the antibiotic so if you stop treatment early, you’re letting those bacteria live - and multiply.
🐴Never skip doses. Antibiotics need to maintain a constant level in the horse’s body, and skipping a dose can allow so-called superbugs to develop and proliferate.
🐴Never stray from approved antibiotics. Don’t use illegally compounded formulations of antibiotics.
🐴Never hesitate to have your horse re-examined if his condition isn’t improving with a prescribed antibiotic.
🐴Never keep outdated antibiotics for later use. They lose effectiveness over time and again, a horse’s condition could be inaccurately assumed.

Ever given a horse a Guiness? I certainly have - my boys would every now and again get one as a pick me up and they loved it!!!

In case you weren't aware, here are some interesting facts about giving Guiness to horses.

🐎Aiding recovery:
Guinness contains yeast and B vitamins such as thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, folic acid, B6 which can help horses recover from stress and strenuous exercise.
🐎Treating anhidrosis:
Guinness has long been anecdotally recommended in the horse world for horses with anhydrosis. (the condition that prevents horses from sweating properly)
🐎A tasty treat:
Many horses enjoy the taste of beer, which contains barley and hops.

Couple of caveats about giving your horse beer:

🐴Overweight horses: You shouldn't give an overweight horse a steady diet of beer 😁

🐴Consult your vet: If you suspect your horse has anhydrosis, have him checked by your vet before attempting any treatment on your own.

Cheers 🍻

What does it really mean to "let them go on a good day?"

It means it will be your hardest day. It won't matter if you've never done it before, or if you're gifted a dozen good days, each good day is always the hardest one.

It means they won't know what the fuss is about, why they're getting so many treats and extra belly scratches and hugs.

It means you will second guess your decision right up to the very last moment, the very last breath. You'll second guess yourself afterwards.

They'll knicker at you when you arrive, just like any other day.

The weather, perfect. They are content. They look sound today. They are breathing well, eating well, they get up easily enough from a nap in the sun....the list goes on. Whatever issue they struggle with, today they aren't.

Today you euthanize them.

This is what going on a good day means: sending them out while they are happy, while they are healthy, while they are eating well, walking well, etc. You make the choice to do it before an emergency takes the choice away from you, before your horse has to experience any more trauma or pain.

Their last memory will be filled with love.

It'll rip your heart out every time.

We can see the patterns and the increasing trends. We can predict it a little. We can obsess over the past and worry about the future.

Fortunately, horses, all animals, live in the moment. They don't worry about those things. They aren't worried about winter. They aren't worried about July, or allergies, or progressive diseases like cushings or dsld. They don't think about the close calls they've had before, and they certainly aren't thinking about the close calls that are destined to come, as their body continues to age and break down. They just are. They are happy and healthy, or fearful and in pain, on that day, in that moment.

It is the most difficult, most loving gift we are blessed to be able to give.

And that first ice storm will come, that first deep snow, that first heat wave....and you will find a little relief, no longer doubting the choice you made.

They were happy, and safe, and loved. That is all that matters.

It is never easy. ~Kelly Meister, author

FEEDING FOR FEET:

When it comes to foot nutrition, a lot of attention centres around vitamins such as B7 (biotin), especially when hooves aren't in great shape. But on its own, this isn't enough to correct poor horn quality in the majority of cases and it's actually one of many essential nutrients required by your horse for hoof integrity. Other nutrients are vitamins A and E, selenium and minerals such as calcium, zinc, manganese and copper.

When you're choosing a feed or supplement, it's important to remember that FORM DEFINES FUNCTION, so opting for “bio-available” or “chelated” forms of minerals will mean these minerals are more easily taken up by your horse’s body helping him utilise them more efficiently and respond better to dietary supplementation.

However there are a couple of other things that are often overlooked that contribute to good hoof health.

ENERGY LEVELS
Protein and energy are the first limiting nutrients in hoof nutrition and if they aren't present in sufficient amounts, hoof quality will be poor, regardless of what other nutrients are present.
So if your horse has poor feet, the first thing you need to consider is his total energy intake ie. the number of calories he consumes in a day. Because without it your horse simply can't function, and this will have a negative impact on his metabolism.

Your horse needs energy for all his basic body functions, including digesting and utilising the nutrients in his feed, and to help sustain the growth and development of tissues which include the hoof wall. So insufficient energy means he won't reap the benefits for horn growth and integrity.

Good doers will get the majority of their energy requirements through the forage portion of their diet, however those in harder work, or horses who need additional calories to support and maintain weight and condition, additional help from the correct concentrate feed is important.

PROTEIN
Protein always gets a lot of unnecessary bad press when in fact it's an essential nutrient that's vital for correct and healthy hoof formation. The hoof wall is comprised mostly of the protein keratin, so not providing enough dietary protein will have a negative impact on hoof health and condition. This is when your essential amino acids come into play eg methionine is one of the essential amino acids important in the make-up of keratin so a shortfall in the diet may lead to poor hoof growth.

Summary:
A healthy horse means healthy feet so when your horse's overall health is compromised, his hooves are also likely to be negatively affected. The aim therefore is a fully balanced diet that delivers enough quantities of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals to support healthy hoof growth, alongside fibre from forage, which is essential for gut health.

But - if, despite feeding a good quality balanced diet for at least 9 months doesn't achieve strong enough feet, it could be that there's an issue with the absorption and utilisation of the nutrients and that can be remedied with additional supplementation.

Good to know then that the Fibregenix feed balancer range contains the full spectrum of vitamins, digestible protein, a highly bioavailable form of organic selenium and minerals including glycinate chelated minerals for these very important benefits, which means that more of every mouthful is utilised.

PS: Never forget also the influence of the environment on hoof integrity as constant wet conditions and/or wet then dry conditions, can take their toll on even the best nourished hooves. 🌿

How's your horse's shedding going?

Remember that in order for the skin and hair coat to stay healthy and for effective shedding to take place, your horse must be having proper nutrition.

The quality of the “shed” is highly dependent upon nutrition and hormonal communication within the body. Proper mineral and fatty acid balance are necessary to formulate the hormones which the body relies on to internally signal shedding of the hair coat.

Good to know then that Fibregenix balancers contain both Omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids plus vital minerals in a highly bioavailable chelate form to ensure the efficient formulation of the hormones needed for the shedding process takes place....
