🐕 Meet Monza 🐕

A very handsome shepherd gentleman who recently donated blood for the first time here with us and we can’t wait to tell you why we’re so proud! ✨

Monza was quite nervous when we first met him, the buzz of the clippers, the smells and sounds of the hospital were all new to him and he was very unsure of us.
Over the course of several weeks Monza visited us here in the blood bank with his dad. We would turn the clippers on and give him treats for each time his nose touched them, slowly working our way up to be able to clip his front leg, then transitioning to him sitting up on the table and letting us touch his paws and legs.

Next was the routine aspect, we would do a “dry run” going through the motions of a donation;
1. Waiting in reception
Treats
2. Vitals in the blood bank
Treats
3. Vet assessment and health check
More treats
4. Clipping his leg and wrapping in vet wrap.
Some more treats
5. Hopping up onto the table and touching his feet and legs
You guessed it.. more treats
6. Going for a toilet break in the yard and heading home.

When the big day came to donate, you wouldn’t have known only weeks ago Monza was nervous. He was an absolute pro and his blood was recently used to save a patients life who is now at home recovering with their family. ❤️

🍌Meet Snoop 🍌

This handsome gentleman is Snoop!

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Snoop here at WAVES.. prior to his hero status as a blood donor he was a patient here with our surgery team. Our surgeons performed a TPLO on him and we’re happy to report he’s in tip top health, well rested and ready to save some lives! 🌟

All of our blood donors are extremely special and Snoop is no exception.. they all have their favourite snacks, toys and little quirks.. So when Snoops mum told us his favourite snack was banana.. we were sure to have some on hand for him 😌

During the process he enjoyed his frozen kong, treats and of course his most favourite treat.. banana! 🍌

Well done Snoop and thank you so much for your life saving donation, we can’t wait to see you next time 😍

Meet the cutie patootie Lola 🌼

Lola donated here with us for the very first time a couple of weeks ago, she passed her blood donor screening with flying colours and was ready to get to work.

Originally both Lola and her sister Charlie came in for their donor screening as their parents were hoping they could be blood donors together.. unfortunately Miss Charlie wasn’t destined to be a blood donor, however that of course didn’t stop her from supporting her sister while she saved some lives.. everyone needs a hype girl and Charlie was perfect for the job.

Lola took the process in her stride and enjoyed all of her chicken and treats throughout!

Lola’s blood has already been used to save 2 patients lives in hospital and her plasma has been frozen and stored ready for the next patient in need. On behalf of the patients families and us here at WAVES, thank you for your generous donation Lola.. we’ll see you again soon ❤️

💗🌟 HAPPY VET APPRECIATION DAY 🌟💗

Today is world veterinarian appreciation day.

We would like to invite you all in joining us to thank our kind and compassionate vets.

As you may know, each and every single time a donor walks through our doors they are always greeted and examined by our vets prior to donation.. making sure their hearts are strong, their bodies are healthy and of course making sure they feel comfortable within the hospital.

Without our wonderful vets we wouldn’t be able to save the lives we do. On behalf of the WAVES Blood Bank and the greater Perth community, thank you all so much for your hard work and dedication, we appreciate you ❤️

🛠️ Meet Murphy 🛠️

The newest addition to the WAVES blood donor program ❤️

Murphy donated for the very first time today with us and was an absolute superstar.. 🌟

For a young gentleman who is use to going to work with his dad on construction sites we thought he may be a bit apprehensive about coming in to see us at the hospital but he wasn’t phased at all.. even laying down and almost having a snooze through his donation!

Putting down the hard hat and tools today he even thought the payment of chicken and was a pretty sweet deal and he’ll be back to see us again soon 😍

Murphy’s blood was spun down and separated into packed red cells and plasma. That means he has the potential to save up to 3 different dogs lives.

Congratulations on your very first blood donation Murphy, make sure you tell the crew on site that you’re a life saver now and deserve all of the extra treats 😉❤️

Meet bouncy girl Suzie 💛

Suzie donated for the first time here with us last week and she came all the way from Yallingup, what a road trip!

This little lady donated in record time and her mum was quite impressed at how good she was for her first time.
Her blood was spun down and separated into packed red blood cells and plasma, ready to be used for the next patient in need.

In her down time Suzie loves going to the beach, annoying her cat brother Harry and sunbathing on the patio ☀️

We can’t thank her family enough for making the trip up to see us and we can’t wait to see her cheesy grin again soon! 💛

Meet the beautiful Frank!

Frank (aka) Frankenstein is our newest member here at the WAVES blood bank and he’s an absolute sweetheart ❤️

He strutted on in and before donating he needed to greet everyone he came across in the hospital 😍

In his down time he hangs at home with his fur siblings;

Welcome 🌼 Daisy 🌼

Would you believe this is how Daisy enjoys herself in the blood bank?! Yes she is THAT chill.. mind you she’s usually laying on the cool floor while we feed her treats and tell her how sleek and beautiful she is!

Recently Daisy donated blood for the very first time with us and she was absolute perfection.

This time she traded the floor for the table with a soft blanket and one of our wonderful nurses giving her ear scratches with her mum right by her side throughout the donation process.

With a tummy full of treats and a comfy place to lay, there was no way Daisy was going back onto the floor, instead she opted to receive her recovery fluids happily on the table, have you ever seen such a chilled out hound?!

Thank you for your generous donation Daisy! You’ve already saved 2 lives and we can’t wait to see you again soon! 🐶❤️

🎁🎄Merry Christmas 🎄🎁

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our generous blood donors and their families who have not only donated with us this year, but all the previous years too.

To those that have retired from their duties and are putting their paws up this Christmas and to those who have left us and gained their angel wings, no doubt watching over our hospital patients and providing comfort and a warm welcome to the many beautiful creatures that make their way across the rainbow bridge each year. We will always remember you ❤️

Meet the newest addition to our blood bank family! CUBA!

Cuba is a 12m old Rottweiler and came into hospital to help record some educational radiograph content for our imaging department.

While under sedation, we performed a blood donation and he woke up in our blood bank room all cosy and surrounded by treats, it’s safe to say he was stoked with his “payment” and is now a regular donor here with us 🥰

Did you know that healthy canines who represent to our surgery department after their surgery for follow up orthopaedic X-rays can donate blood while they’re here?
Ask our friendly surgery department when booking in your next post-op check up X-rays 😀

Thank you Cuba, not only for helping our friends within the industry learn about different techniques for radiographs but for saving some lives with your generous donation while you were at it, good boi 😍

Sweet boy Bailey came in for an emergency donation last week, he bled in record time and replenished our exhausted blood bank ❤️🩸

As the weather warms up ☀️ we start to see a rise in trauma cases presenting to our emergency department. They can range from motor vehicle accidents, dog fights, stick injuries to rodenticide toxicities.

We use blood products to help stabilise these patients as a part of their treatment plan. Blood and (or) plasma can sometimes be the first port of call for these trauma cases, whether it’s to restore red blood cell volume lost via catastrophic haemmorage or to help coagulation within the blood via plasma, each component of blood is unique and important to each individual case.

Thanks to Bailey his donation will have the ability to save up to 3 lives.. without him and others just like him we wouldn’t be able to help the pets of Perth in their greatest time of need.

Today we celebrated Kobe’s 10th blood donation here with us at WAVES 🌟1️⃣0️⃣🌟

He has saved up to 30 lives so far, so we decided to have a look through our registry to see what his blood and plasma has been used for over the years;

- IMHA (immune mediated haemolytic anemia)
- IMTP (immune mediated thrombocytopenia)
- Splenectomy’s
- Parvo
- Cancer
- Rat bait toxicity

Thanks to Kobe and his family, our patients in hospital have received the gift of life and there’s a good chance if your dog has received blood products from February 2020 onwards that Kobe may have just been the donor.

In his down time, Kobe loves going to the beach and exploring the outdoors with his family, he’s also partial to a delicious treat!

Please join us in congratulating Kobe as he enters our prestigious lifetime blood donor club 🏆

Well done Kobe, we look forward to seeing you again next time 😍

Welcome back Trinket! 🖤

You may remember Trinket from when she came in with her pawrents for her initial blood donor screening assessment a few weeks ago.. she has now officially completed her very first blood donation 🌟🥇

We are pleased to report that Trinket has already managed to save 1 life so far.. her blood was separated into 2 half units of packed red blood cells (PRBC) and 1 unit of plasma.

This past weekend, half a unit of her PRBC was used to save a patients life who is now back at home with their family, all thanks to her generous donation.

The remaining second half of her PRBC and her whole unit of plasma remains safely stored in our blood bank, ready for the next patient in need.

A big warm welcome to the very handsome Malawi 🩶

Malawi is the newest hero at the blood bank here at WAVES and he is a bit of a fashionista with his cool hound booties on 😍

With unlimited treats and lots of pats from his mum, his first donation was a success!
In true greyhound form he took it all in his stride and was stoked when we told him he gets his very own goodie bag of Prime 100 treats to take home for being a life saver!

His blood was recently used to save 2 hospital patients lives, in which we are happy to report, have made a full recovery and are back at home with their families ❤️

Today we would like send our deepest condolences to the Erceg family on the loss of their gentle giant Moose 🩵

Moose was a big part of the WAVES blood donor family and over the years with us completed 6 donations which helped save the lives of up to 18 hospitalised patients!
Moose was also an emergency donor and would come in with his parents at the 11th hour to save an animals life who was in dire need.. a true blood angel ✨

He was a gentle soul who absolutely loved chicken and all the attention he got when he came in to see us, with his big goofy smile, enormous paws and relaxed demeanour he was the perfect boi for the job and he upheld that responsibility with pride.

We would like to invite the greater vet community and pet owners of Perth in thanking Moose for his service over the years and hope his family find some comfort in knowing that Moose’s legacy will live on in the lives of those who he saved with his precious blood donations.

Rest easy Moose and thank you for your service, you will always be remembered as a hero ❤️

Meet Ollie 🩵
This handsome boy donated blood last week and he has a routine a little different from the rest.
Ollie gets a little bit nervous at the vets for nail clips and blood draws so we like to make the process as relaxing and stress free as possible for him.
He receives a light sedation and donates via a jugular draw. While he’s sedated we clip his nails, brush his beautiful coat and give his ears a good wipe.
Ollie has progressed so well with us and now sits comfortably on the table and patiently waits for his treats like a good boy with a smile on his face 🥰

Our beautiful Libby is back 😍

Donating blood isn’t the only time we’ve seen Libby here at WAVES.

Libby visited us a few weeks ago when she and her cat sister decided they would conspire against their parents and break into the cat biscuits, devouring the entire contents.. Libby presented to our emergency department bloated and feeling a bit sorry for herself, and you guessed it, those biscuits had to come straight back up 🙊

Luckily for Libby our blood bank coordinator was on shift so she had a familiar face greet her at the door. Libby still maintains it was all her cat sisters idea and that a dog who saves lives on the regular would never get into such mischief!

10/10 Libby, we believe you’re innocent 😅

Not all heroes wear capes but Daisy sure does 😍

Beautiful Daisy 🌼 is a regular around here, she comes in to the hospital, struts her stuff and donates like an absolute pro.

Daisy prefers a jugular bleed because it’s a little quicker and that means more time for her to enjoy her favourite Prime 100 duck treats! 🦆

So far Daisy has saved over 9 lives with her blood donations and we cannot thank her and her family enough. Good girl Daisy 🌼 we can’t wait to see those big beautiful ears next time 😍

This week we met the beautiful Trinket and her parents 🥰

Trinket came in for her initial blood donor screening which included a questionnaire, vet health check, temperament assessment and some preliminary blood tests to assess her candidacy to be a life saver with us!

We are happy to report she passed with flying colours and we can’t wait to see her for her first blood donation, we even threw in a Prime100 goodie bag to sweeten the deal 😀

Look at this fresh new beautiful face!

This little ray of sunshine is Gracie ☀️

Gracie came to donate for the first time with us last week and was an absolute natural, she happily ate her Prime 100 goodies and of course freshly cooked chicken!

She came in when we needed her the most. One of our hospital patients was having life saving thoracic surgery and her blood was needed on standby in case there was a catastrophic bleed. Her blood was kept on hold and in full form ready to be used if need be.

Luckily our surgery patient didn’t require her blood during their procedure and was then spun down and separated into packed red cells and plasma, being safely stored in our blood bank awaiting the next patient in need.

We love seeing articles helping to spread awareness about animal blood donation, especially cats 😻

Our hospitalised cats also require blood transfusions from time to time, however, unlike dogs their blood is unable to be stored in our blood bank due to the short shelf life, therefore leaves us needing more readily available donors to come in and save lives when we need it most.

Meet Peggy, or as she’s affectionately called by her mum, Peggy 3 Leggy 🙊

Peggy is a tripawd, but that doesn’t hold her back! She is one of our newest cat blood donors here at WAVES 😻

Peggy is a special donor, as she has type B blood.

Why does this make Peggy special? This is because majority of Australia’s cat colony have type A blood, however, with exotic breeds becoming more popular their blood types can differ and we are seeing more cats with type B blood. This makes Peggy invaluable for our exotic patients who need blood transfusions as part of their life saving treatment.

Meet the beautiful Miya ☀️

Miya is the newest member of the WAVES blood bank! She was a little nervous at first, but with her mum there holding her paw throughout the process and of course lots of yummy treats she made it through her first blood donation with ease.

Miya is quite the clever cookie too, she can shake, hi five, roll over and beg. In her down time she loves nothing more than going to the beach, hanging out at cafes with her mum and playing with her cat sister Mali 🐱

Meet Freddie 🧡

Beautiful Freddie visited us a couple of weeks ago for his initial donor assessment.
He of course passed with flying colours, however, he was a little bit wary of the cold alcohol swabs used to clean his skin for the donation.
His mum worked with him at home to help show him that it’s not so scary and this past week he made his very first blood donation! Woohoo!

Freddie’s blood was recently used to save a young puppies life in hospital! On behalf of the little recipient and their family, thank you both so very much, we couldn’t do it without you!

Meet gentle giant Colin 💚

He may look a little familiar and that’s because he’s related to one of our beautiful donors Raffy!

Colin wanted to be a hero too so donated here with us at WAVES a couple of weeks ago. He was an absolute superstar and happily sat there during his donation, accepting hand fed treats and lots of scruffy ear pats!
