How to Tackle Caterpillars in the Garden 👇🏼

Nobody likes caterpillars in the garden, but these unwelcome guests are inevitable this time of year…

Even the experts will have to deal with these pesky critters. Just look at some of the damage we’ve seen this spring!!

To cope, gardeners may use chemical pesticides to control infestations.

Chemical pesticides are effective in dealing with pest problems, but they also:

👉🏼 Harm beneficial insects like bees, butterflies and ladybirds.
👉🏼 Reduce biodiversity in your garden.
👉🏼 Cause irritation to skin and eyes.
👉🏼 Leaves long-lasting residue on crops & in the environment.

Instead, we recommend these effective but natural methods for dealing with caterpillars...

✅ Where possible, hand-pick caterpillars off your crop.

Following the pattern of existing damage will help point out where they’re hiding. Because you haven’t used any harmful pest control products, you can squish them, feed them to chickens, throw them into spider webs, or even feed them to fish.

✅ Encourage predators.

One of the best ways to keep your garden caterpillar-free is to make it a good home for predators. Plant bird-attracting natives where possible, add a bird bath/feeder to your garden and watch nature tackle your pest problem.

✅ Use a natural pesticide.

Neem oil is an excellent natural treatment and can be used regularly as a preventative. It’s practical, affordable and safe for beneficials. We also recommend keeping a bottle of Pyrethrum on hand for more severe infestations. Finally, an insecticidal soap like Pure Castile will come in handy for caterpillars and a range of other pests.

We stock everything you need, in-store and online.

At Aquaponics WA and Hydroponic Xpress, we stock a range of products designed to help you tackle pest problems, such as caterpillars, aphids, spider mites, and more. For more information about our sustainable pest control solutions, visit us online or in-store for expert advice.

17/09/2024

When setting up a hydro system, swapping grow channels for more affordable PVC pipe is tempting. This might be cost-effective in the short term, but there are many reasons we'd recommend splurging on grow channels instead.

One major concern with using PVC pipe is that it's not always food-grade which means it may contain harmful chemicals that can leach into nutrient solutions and contaminate your plants.

Grow channels on the other hand are specifically designed for hydroponic use and are made from food-safe materials ensuring no nasties make their way into your final crop.

Another concern with PVC pipe, particuarly for NFT systems, is that the round base offered by PVC can cause nutrient solution to pool unevenly.

This creates areas where the nutrient solution is too deep or shallow for optimal root health.

By contrast, dedicated grow channels offer a flat base, ensureing consistent water flow and proper nutrient distribution, essential in maintaining a uniform, thin nutrient film.

Unlike PVC pip, grow channels also come with additional features, like light UV-blocking lids to inhibit fungal growth and built-in plant sites for easy set-up and harvesting.

While a simple strip of PVC pipe might seem cheaper initially, the long-term benefits of grow channels, including better plant health and easier maintenance, often outweight the initial cost difference.

To learn more about setting up an efficient and effective hydroponic system, call 1800 640 222 or chat with one of our friendly team members in-store.

Are grow channels really worth the investment, or can you get away with cheap PVC pipe instead?

Fungus Gnats wreaking havoc on your potted plants?

Gnat Nil is a pumice based barrier pest control method. It prevents eggs from hatching beneath the gnat barrier, and deters pests from laying, as fungus gnats prefer to lay their eggs in moist soil or coco coir.

Gnat Nil is an all natural, chemical free and non toxic pest control solution that is safe to use.

Simply apply a 1-2 cm layer to cover the surface of your growing container/pot, and watch your Fungus Gnat problems disappear.

11/07/2024

Deep Water Culture (DWC) is a simple yet effective hydroponic growing method. It uses floating rafts or individual buckets where plants grow in net pots filled with media, their roots stretching into nutrient-rich water below.

In DWC, an airstone connected to an air pump oxygenates the nutrient solution, promoting healthy root development. This method is easy to set up and maintain, making it ideal for beginners and small-scale growers.

One advantage of DWC is that each reservoir is managed independently, reducing the risk of disease spread. However, as you scale up, maintaining individual reservoirs can become time-consuming.

Recirculating Deep Water Culture (RDWC) connects multiple smaller reservoirs to one central reservoir. This system automates nutrient distribution, allowing growers to adjust the solution in one place for all plants.

RDWC is more complex to set up but saves time for larger operations. It produces consistent results across all plants, but increases the risk of widespread issues if one plant becomes diseased.

The Kratky method is a passive form of DWC, requiring no pumps or electricity. As plants consume the nutrient solution, an air gap forms naturally, oxygenating the roots.

Kratky is incredibly low-maintenance and perfect for small herbs or leafy greens. However, it's less suitable for larger plants or long-term crops that have higher nutrient and oxygen demands.

Each method has its pros and cons, varying in setup complexity, maintenance needs, and scalability. Your choice depends on your experience level, the types of plants you're growing, and the size of your operation.

Ready to start your hydroponic journey? Visit Aquaponics WA and Hydroponic Xpress to find the perfect system for your growing needs. Our experts are ready to help you choose between DWC, RDWC, Kratky, or other hydroponic methods.

You’ve never seen coriander like this before!

This is a new variety we’re growing called Thai Coriander (other names include Perennial Coriander, Mexican Coriander/Culantro or Ngo G*i).

This perennial herb has a very similar flavour to regular coriander, although many have described it as more pungent. It’s intense, earthy floral taste might be described as ‘soapy’ to some, but we love it.

Thai Coriander can be used in the same application as regular coriander, but as it’s stronger, we recommend using a smaller amount. It’s foliage is also hardier than it’s traditional counterpart, so it holds up better to cooking in applications like stir frys, soups, noodles and currys where coriander is best used to garnish, or fresh in salsas and salads.

We’re growing ours in premium hydroponic grade perlite and feeding regularly with our custom formulated nutrient blend, Ag-Grow Grow and Bloom. Both of these products are available in-store and online for purchase with free click and collect available for WA based customers.

So, what do you think? Have you ever heard of Thai Coriander before?

Have you ever wondered why hydroponic plant nutrients so often come in two, or even three parts instead of just one?

We promise it’s not a marketing ploy to make you buy more bottles - keeping your A+B nutrients separate means your plants can uptake as much of the good stuff as possible.

Here’s why...

Typically, your part A nutrient will contain Nitrogen, Calcium and a few other macronutrients designed to support plant structure and growth.

On the other hand, your part B nutrient will typically feature phosphorus, potassium and other micronutrients like magnesium and iron. These nutrients support overall plant health.

Together, these two parts create a complete and robust nutrient profile, ensuring your plants get everything they need to grow.

Unfortunately, when certain nutrients are mixed together, they can react and become unusable.

For example, combining calcium and sulphur directly can create calcium sulphate, a compound that your plants can’t uptake.

So, as tempting as it might be, avoid mixing your part A + B nutrients together and always adhere to the dosage instructions provided by your nutrient supplier.

At Aquaponics WA & Hydroponic Xpress, we exclusively use our in-house formulated Ag-Grow Grow and Bloom A+B nutrients. At only $24.47 for a 1L bottle, it's an unbeatable value!

At Aquaponics WA and Hydroponic Xpress, we believe in using natural methods to control pests in our systems and greenhouses.

A favourite technique of ours is a regular release of predatory mites. Let's dive in to how these tiny heros can help keep your garden happy and thriving!

First up, what are predatory bugs?

Well, predatory bugs are insects that feed on other insects. Unlike chemical pest control methods, a regular release of predatory mites is eco-friendly and safe for pollinators, people and pets.

Okay, so what pests do predatory bugs treat?

Different predatory bugs target different pests, so the bug you need will depend on the pest you have. In saying that, predatory bugs can tackle problems with aphids, whitefly, thrips and even spider mite.

How often do I need to release predatory bugs?

It depends on the severity of the pest infestation you're dealing with and the size of your garden. At Aquaponics WA and Hydroponic Xpress, we do a regular release every 3-6 months.

When there are no more pests for your predatory bugs to eat, they'll naturally die off or migrate to other areas of your garden in search of food. They will never themselves become pests to your garden.

Incorporating predatory bugs into your pest management strategy is a safe and effective way to tackle pest problems while maintaining massive harvests.

If you'd like more information about ways you can keep your garden pest free without the use of harmful chemicals, give us a call on 1800 640 222 or check out our newsletter to read more. Everything is linked in our bio.

We recently got our hands on a competing brand of expanded clay (LECA) growing media, and we were truly surprised by the stark differences between the two brands.

Here, we’ve included a side-by-side comparison of the two products. The first photo is the expanded clay we stock in store. It’s German quality, Liaflor expanded clay.

The second photo is our competitor's product (we won’t name who).

Apart from being aesthetically very different, we thought we’d take this opportunity to highlight the benefits of using a high-quality grow media over a cheaper alternative.

The biggest difference between the two is durability. We’ve been using and reusing clay for as long as we’ve been open. In fact, some of the LECA you see in our displays has been there for more than 30 years.

By comparison, you’ll be lucky to get more than a couple of uses out of this cheaper brand of LECA, which has already started to break down and disintegrate as it’s been handled.

A few other factors that are worth talking about in terms of the quality of your expanded clay grow media:

👉🏼 High Quality expanded clay is manufactured to be uniform in size which maintains even water distribution and air pockets within the growing media.

👉🏼 When it comes to expanded clay, cheaper options are often not pH stable which makes them prone to inconsistent pH levels. This can result in toxicities and deficiencies in your plants.

👉🏼 Reputable LECA manufacturers like Liaflor prioritise cleanliness and sterility during the manufacturing process ensuring the clay you buy is free from contaminants, pests and diseases. Cheaper LECA may not adhere to these same standards, increasing the risk of introducing unwanted pathogens into your system.

At Aquaponics WA and Hydroponic Xpress, a 50L bag of expanded clay will set you back $51.25 - a worthy investment for increased performance, consistency and long-term value for your plants.

Aquaponics is an innovative and most importantly, sustainable way to grow plants and raise fish simultaneously.

The term Aquaponics combines two well-known farming methods; Aquaculture which is the process of breeding and harvesting fish in a closed loop and hydroponics, which is the process of growing plants without soil.

There are so many reasons to love aquaponics.

Not only does it use only a fraction of the water you would need to grow the same fish and vegetables traditionally, but it often utilises vertical farming to take up a fraction of the space, too.

In an aquaponic system, nothing goes to waste.

Faecal matter from your fish is converted to nutrients for plants and in return, plant roots help to filter the water, keeping it clean for the fish.

It’s a closed-loop, symbiotic relationship that’s good for the environment and for your dinner plate afterwards.

Aquaponics is a fantastic way to grow your own food, whether you’re an experienced gardener or you’re just starting out.

It’s eco-friendly, efficient and rewarding. What’s more, it’s a great way to teach your kids about living more sustainably.

Interested in learning more about Aquaponics? Give us a call on 1800 640 222 or visit us in store. We’re here to answer all your questions and get you started on your Aquaponic journey.
