Summer Scaries - Episode 5: Fireworks 🎆

Over the summer period, there are several holidays where fireworks displays may be held by local councils - including Christmas, New Year’s Eve/Day, and Australia Day. Keep an eye on council websites so you know when to expect noise in your area.

While fireworks are fun for us, many pets find the loud, unpredictable sounds extremely distressing. Sadly, these nights are some of the most common times we see:
⚠️ Pets injuring themselves in panic
⚠️ Dogs and cats escaping yards or homes while trying to flee the noise

How can you help your pet cope with fireworks?

🐾 Medication (when needed)
For pets with severe or known anxiety, situational anxiety medications can be very helpful. There are now liquid and tablet options available.
👉 Speak with your vet early and make sure you have enough medication before public holidays - don’t wait until the last minute.

🏠 Create a safe space
Set your pet up in a quiet, secure room where they can’t hurt themselves.
❗ Avoid leaving them outside - frightened pets can perform impressive (and dangerous) escape attempts when panicked.

🧠 Distraction & enrichment
Try:
• Playtime
• High-value treats
• Frozen lick mats or stuffed Kongs
These can help redirect focus and reduce stress.

🧥 Pressure therapy
A Thunder Jacket or similar compression garment can help calm some pets. These lightweight designs are suitable for summer and work by gently applying pressure - like a full-body hug.

⏰ Preparation is key
Don’t wait until the fireworks start.
✔️ Give medication early (as advised by your vet)
✔️ Set up enrichment and safe spaces beforehand

Once a pet is already highly stressed, distractions are far less effective.

🎆 A little preparation can make a huge difference to your pet’s comfort and safety this summer. If you’re unsure what options are best for your pet, chat with your vet - we’re here to help!

⭐️ PATIENT OF THE DAY ⭐️

Meet Ollie the Cavoodle 😍
This handsome little guy saw Dr Jason and Vet Nurses Bethany and Bruna today for a dental procedure, and he was such a sweet boy while in hospital 💕
Ollie is so well behaved and a total ladies man, he stole the hearts of all the nurses (and Dr Jason!) and everyone just wanted to cuddle him all day, which Ollie was VERY happy about 🥰

Summer Scaries - Episode 4: Toxic Foods 🍗

Christmas is a wonderful time for family, food and celebrations - but it’s also one of the busiest times of year for emergency vet visits. Many of these visits are due to pets getting into foods they shouldn’t.

The most common ways pets get into trouble at Christmas:
🎁 Food wrapped and left under the tree (chocolate stockings are a big one!)
🍗 Well-meaning family members sneaking food under the table
🍽️ Food left unattended on benches or tables - even “just for a minute”

Most pet owners know the basics, but Christmas often means visitors, kids, or family members who don’t have pets. Make it clear early on:
👉 Your pets already have their own treats - they don’t need human food scraps.

💬 “I feel bad eating in front of the dog, he wants some ham!”
We get it - those puppy eyes are powerful! Try these safer alternatives:

✅ Keep a packet of dog-safe treats easily accessible so guests can give those instead
✅ Prepare frozen lick mats or stuffed Kongs to keep your dog occupied during meals
✅ This helps them feel included - without risking an emergency vet visit

🚫 Common Christmas foods that are toxic or dangerous for pets:
❌ Grapes, sultanas & fruit cake – toxic, cause kidney failure
❌ Garlic and Onion - toxic, cause anaemia
❌ Chocolate – toxic, causes heart damage
❌ Cooked bones (any kind) – can splinter and cause blockages or perforations
❌ Ham – very high in salt and fat, causes pancreatitis
❌ Corn cobs – can cause life-threatening intestinal blockages

🎄 A little planning goes a long way. Keeping festive foods out of reach and educating guests can help ensure your pets enjoy a safe, happy Christmas too.

⭐️ (Almost but not quite) PATIENT OF THE DAY ⭐️
Lizzy the Domestic Medium Hair Kitty saw Dr Maddy and Vet Nurse Bethany today for a lump to be removed from her face.
As adorable as she is, Lizzy is a feisty little lady and her family warned us she may put up a fight.
Someone must have given Lizzy the heads up that Santa 🎅 is watching, because she communicated her unhappiness but didn’t try to eat us 😆 she even let us give her pats after surgery - to an extent (clearly from the photo you can tell she had some big feelings to communicate)

🧑‍⚕️😻 Meet The Team Tuesday - Jen 😻👩‍⚕️
I was born and raised in Pemberton, surrounded by a very large family with farming roots spanning from livestock to horticulture. Growing up in a small community shaped my love for animals, nature, and quiet moments - values that still define me today. I later attended Perth College as a boarder before officially making the move to Perth when I was 18.

In my early twenties, I travelled extensively across the globe, eventually settling in the UK on a working holiday visa before returning home at 24. A few years later, at 27, I became a qualified veterinary nurse through South Metro TAFE and have now been practicing for six years. For the past three of those years, I’ve been incredibly thankful to be part of the Your Pet’s Vet family.

Alongside nursing, I am completing a Bachelor of Science at Murdoch University, majoring in Forensic Biology and Toxicology, and I’m now in my final year. My passion for science and commitment to continued learning bring an extra layer of curiosity to my work in the clinic.

When I’m not studying or caring for patients, you’ll often find Jarryd and I wandering along our beloved Beaufort Street café strip, relaxing with the wildlife at Hyde Park, or planning our next adventure together — Norway is next on our list! ✈️

At home, we have three beautiful rescue furchildren:
🩷 Maisey-Rose - 8 years old, gentle as a petal
🖤 Brennan - 6 years old, forever up to mischief
🤎 Dorathy - 4 years old, sass queen of the household

Each of them fills our life with love, purpose, and laughter, and they’re a big part of why I do what I do every day.
