***PARVOVIRUS WARNING*** KOONDOOLA LOCAL AREA
We know of a second confirmed case this week of Canine Parvovirus infection and illness in a second dog from the Koondoola local area. This deadly virus can survive in public areas such as local parks, which is likely how these cases have been transmitted . The disease can infect dogs of all ages, but those that are unvaccinated or lapsed in their vaccines are at very high risk of deadly illness.
PLEASE, PLEASE , PLEASE get your dog's vaccine updated now, regardless of their age.

Little friend "Willie" gets all the love from our team for being the happiest and best dressed patient this week at MalagaVet! Willie is a diabetic, so he gets twice daily insulin injections from his loving owner who is devoted to him. We can't possibly imagine how much he means to his family, but he is a special patient who always comes in with a spring in his step and a smile on his face. Have a lovely Christmas - Willie and family!

STOP DUMPING STRAYS IN HOT WEATHER!

Don't abandon innocent cats and kittens to suffer and die in the heat!! Today we took in this mother cat and kittens who had been locked inside the wooden carrier and left in local bush-land, unable to escape😔 Thankfully a person out walking found them and didn't leave them there. On a day like today they would have died of heat exhaustion.

Our nurses fed, watered and bathed them and they have had a vet exam and treatment they needed at Malaga today. All are resting in safety now.

Did you know that there are shelters and rescues offer a safe haven for stray cats? No matter how difficult your situation, dumping animals is never the right answer and in some cases simply cruel.

Let's work together to end this heartless act and neuter pet cats to reduce stray cat numbers! Share this post to spread awareness!

How is your preparation going for the Christmas break?
Arrangement for pets can add another dimension of stress and another list of things to organise when getting ready to take a break. Here's a handy checklist for pets to help you with the fur-family's needs:

Fur-baby needs:
1) Food for the duration of your holiday, including any prescribed diets
2) Medications/supplements - ensure you have enough to get you to the New Year.
3) Vaccines - are they up to date? A quick call to us to check before drop off date will save you some stress at the boarding kennel or cattery
4) Traveling with your pets? Do they need medication for car sickness or anxiety? Call us for more information and an appointment to prescribe suitable medication
5) Contact numbers - pet sitters will need to know our number in case of any problems while you're away.

Cut off for special orders of medication/diets is Friday 20th December. We will have limited ability to order Monday 23rd December but best to order early to avoid disappointment or back-orders. Call us on 92483420

Veterinary nurses are the heartbeat of the veterinary practice. From providing critical care to animals in need, to offering unwavering support to pet owners, their roles are pivotal in ensuring the highest standard of care for your pets.

In a small private practice like MalagaVet our team is like a family to us. Long term members that you might know like Chris and Lisa are the rock solid foundation we've built on. Newer team members like Lauren, Andrew, Jordarna and Taylah are learning the craft from their more experienced colleagues. All of our nurses are passionate about helping your pets as healthy as they can be, and giving you comfort that your pets are in loving hands from the moment you step through the front door. So from the bottom of my heart to my nurses, thank you so much for your dedication to the animals and it is a pleasure to spend my working life with such wonderful, caring people.

Bones - to give or not to give....that is the question....
This is a topic that can evoke heated discussions as to should you or shouldn't you feed bones to pets?
Our job is to let you know the potential risks of feeding bones in the cases we actually see and treat.
Recently our patient Dudley (the big fella looking at me!) was lucky that the 4cm long piece of bone he swallowed was able to be removed, along with 10cm of intestine that had become necrotic. Thankfully, he has made a full recovery from this major surgery. His dedicated owner had pet insurance which helped immensely to cover the cost of his intensive care.
Not all patients are as fortunate, so please just think carefully before feeding bones to your pets. And yes - get pet insurance!

Super Senior Pet of the week - Introducing 19 year old Ollie ! Doesn't he look amazing for such an old gentleman cat ?!

Likes: People. He'll plonk himself down right in the middle of any gathering, big or small.
Dislikes: Whistling. He once came in from another room just to scratch me in the face to make me stop. (He's now gone mostly deaf, though, so he probably wouldn't be bothered anymore.)
Favourite Food: Canned tuna. Or possibly cake. We can't have either without him pestering us for some.
Favourite Pastime: Sleeping on my desk while I work.
Favourite Toy: Probably the laser pointer.
Naughtiest habit: We can't have plants in the house – he'll eat them.
