With the scorching temperatures rolling in, it’s time to keep our furry friends cool and safe! 🐾 Here's how you can help your pets beat the heat and what to watch out for:

Top Tips for Keeping Pets Cool
🧊 Hydration is Key: Always have fresh, cool water available for your pets. Add ice cubes to their bowl for extra cooling!
🌳 Shade & Shelter: Keep your pets in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Never leave them outside in direct sunlight or locked in a car.
🐾 Limit Exercise: Walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when it’s cooler. Avoid hot pavement—it can burn their paws!
💦 Cool Treats: Freeze treats, or try pet-safe ice blocks to help them chill out.
🚿 Misty Moments: Use a damp cloth or a misting spray to gently cool them down.

Signs of Heat Stroke in Pets

🚨 URGENT: Betty's Story – Keep Sultanas and Grapes Away from Your Pup! 🚨

This is Betty, a sweet 10-year-old Staffy, who recently had a scary experience after eating a few sultanas. 🐶❤️ What seemed harmless turned into an urgent trip to the vet when her family learned that sultanas are highly toxic to dogs and can cause serious kidney damage—even in small amounts.

If your dog, like Betty, gets into sultanas, grapes, or anything containing them, don’t wait! Here’s what to do:
1️⃣ Call your vet immediately – time is critical.
2️⃣ Follow their advice – they may recommend inducing vomiting or bringing your dog in for emergency treatment.
3️⃣ Keep these foods out of reach – prevention is the best medicine!

Symptoms of grape or sultana toxicity can include:
⚠️ Vomiting or diarrhea
⚠️ Lethargy or weakness
⚠️ Loss of appetite
⚠️ Abdominal pain

Meet Bert, our sweet 8.5-year-old Dachshund! 🐾 This week, Bert came into the clinic after accidentally ingesting chocolate 🍫 — a big no-no for our furry friends! 😱

Thankfully, Bert is in great hands, and we're keeping a close eye on him. Chocolate can be dangerous to dogs, so if your pup ever gets into it, don't wait — contact your vet immediately! 🏥

We’re so relieved that Bert is doing okay so far, but we’ll be monitoring him carefully over the next few days. 💙 Here’s a reminder to all pet parents: Keep all chocolate and other toxic foods out of reach of your pets!

Reported cases South of the River!

Parvovirus is a highly contagious and deadly viral infection that affects dogs, especially puppies and unvaccinated dogs.

The virus primarily targets the gastrointestinal system, causing severe vomiting, diarrhoea (bloody),dehydration and lethargy, with a mortality rate of 90%.

The virus is spread by both people and infected dogs via infected clothing/ shoes, contaminated surfaces or animal faeces.

Treatment for infected dogs can vary but often needing 24/7 care at an emergency referral centre, with costs ranging up to $10 000.

VACCINE is crucial in the prevention of this devastating disease. Vaccinations reduces the spread of the virus within the community and therefore decreasing infections.

Meet sweet little Dino. Here he is enjoying some cuddles and getting his blood sugar levels checked. Feline diabetes can occur in 1:100 to 1:500 cats. The 2 most common signs noted by owners are weight loss and increased thirst and urination. Treatment of feline diabetes involves dietary management and regular insulin injections that are generally well tolerated by the patient.

🐾 Meet Cookie! 🐾 Cookie, our sweet 6-year-old Bull Arab, came in today for an anal gland expression and was originally booked for sedation. But with the amazing teamwork of Dr. Teri, Nurse Tanisha, and Cookie’s love for a cream cheese-filled lick mat, we were able to work through the procedure without sedation using our fear-free handling methods! 🌈💪 We’re so proud of Cookie for her bravery and so grateful to our team for their gentle approach that helps pets stay calm and happy during treatments. Great job, Cookie! 🥰👏

At Hammond Park Vet Clinic, our staff are committed to making each visit as fear free as possible. Kruz was so happy nibbling on treats that he didn't even notice his pedicure was in progress!
