Reported cases South of the River!

Parvovirus is a highly contagious and deadly viral infection that affects dogs, especially puppies and unvaccinated dogs.

The virus primarily targets the gastrointestinal system, causing severe vomiting, diarrhoea (bloody),dehydration and lethargy, with a mortality rate of 90%.

The virus is spread by both people and infected dogs via infected clothing/ shoes, contaminated surfaces or animal faeces.

Treatment for infected dogs can vary but often needing 24/7 care at an emergency referral centre, with costs ranging up to $10 000.

VACCINE is crucial in the prevention of this devastating disease. Vaccinations reduces the spread of the virus within the community and therefore decreasing infections.

Its going to be hot today!

As temperatures rise, itโ€™s crucial to take extra precautions to keep our dogs safe and comfortable. Here are some essential tips to protect your furry friends from the heat:

Stay Hydrated: Always ensure your dog has access to fresh water. Dehydration can happen quickly in hot weather, so keep their water bowls topped up!

Smart Walks: Walk your dog in the early morning or late evening when itโ€™s cooler. Be mindful of hot pavementโ€”it can burn your dogโ€™s paws, so always check the ground before stepping out.

Never Leave Them in a Hot Car: Even with the windows cracked, a parked car can turn into a dangerous heat trap. Never leave your dog inside.

Limit Exercise: Avoid vigorous play or exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Instead, opt for indoor activities to keep them cool.

Watch for Heat Exhaustion: Be on the lookout for signs of overheating, such as excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy. If you notice these symptoms, seek advice from your vet immediately.

Letโ€™s keep our four-legged friends safe and make this summer enjoyable for everyone!

Meet Luna, our 19-month-old sweet little Cavoodle with those irresistible eyes! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿพ This week Luna came in to see us for an ear infection. Letโ€™s talk about ear infections in dogs and why it's so important to get them treated early!

๐Ÿ‘‚ Why Do Dogs Get Ear Infections?

Moisture & Allergies: Dogs with floppy ears, like Luna, are more prone to ear infections because moisture can get trapped in their ears. Allergies can also contribute, making them more susceptible.

Bacteria & Yeast: Bacteria and yeast love warm, moist environments, and the inside of a dog's ear is a perfect breeding ground. This can lead to infections if not treated properly.

Signs to Watch For: If your dog is shaking their head, scratching at their ears, or showing signs of discomfort, it could be an ear infection. You might also notice a foul odor or discharge from the ear.

Treatment Is Key: Ear infections can cause pain and discomfort, but the good news is that they are treatable! Early treatment is essential to avoid more serious complications like hearing loss.

Weโ€™re taking great care of Luna, and sheโ€™s already on her way to feeling better! ๐Ÿถโค๏ธ If you notice any signs of ear trouble with your dog, donโ€™t waitโ€”get them checked out right away!

Meet Pearl, our sweet 5-year-old Pug X Chihuahua, who came to visit us for an a**l gland expression today! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’•

Did you know that expressing your dog's a**l glands is an important part of their health and comfort? Hereโ€™s why:

๐Ÿ” Why Do Dogs Need A**l Glands Expressed?

Prevent Discomfort: A**l glands can become full, impacted, or infected, causing discomfort and sometimes pain. Regular expression helps keep them healthy and prevents issues.

Relieve Itching & Scooting: If a dog's a**l glands are full or irritated, they may scoot on the ground or lick their rear end excessively. Expressing them can bring quick relief!

Avoid Infections: If the glands aren't expressed regularly, they can become infected, leading to more serious issues, including abscesses. Regular care helps prevent this.

Odor Control: Full a**l glands can produce a strong, unpleasant odor. Expressing them keeps your dog fresh and comfortable!

Pearl is all set and feeling much better after her visit. Remember, if you notice your dog scooting or licking excessively, it might be time to have those glands checked! ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ’–

Meet Mali, our adorable 6-month-old Miniature Dachshund, who is in for her spey today! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ’•

Speying (spaying) offers many wonderful benefits, and weโ€™re so happy to provide Mali with the care she needs. Here are some great reasons why speying is so beneficial:

โœจ Health Benefits: Spaying eliminates the risk of ovarian and uterine cancers and greatly reduces the risk of breast cancer.
๐Ÿถ Prevents Unwanted Litters: Helps reduce the number of unwanted puppies, contributing to the pet overpopulation problem.
โค๏ธ Improves Behaviour: Spaying can decrease certain behaviors like roaming, aggression, and marking, making for a happier, more manageable pet.
๐Ÿ”’ Longer Life: Spayed pets often live longer, healthier lives, as they're less likely to develop certain health issues.
๐Ÿ˜Š Less Stress: Spaying can reduce the instinct to go into heat, which means fewer mood swings and a happier, more comfortable pup!

We can't wait to see Mali bouncing around with her happy, healthy self once she's recovered! ๐Ÿ’–

๐Ÿพ Meet Mosh! ๐Ÿพ

This lovely lady is Mosh, a 12.5-year-old Beagle cross who has stolen all our hearts at the clinic. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’– Mosh is a seasoned visitor, always showing her incredible patience and sweet nature during her visits.

This week, Mosh came in for her ACTH stimulation test, a diagnostic tool we use to monitor adrenal gland function. This test is especially important for pets managing conditions like Cushingโ€™s disease or Addisonโ€™s disease, as it helps us evaluate how well their adrenal glands respond to stimulation. ๐Ÿฉบ

Whatโ€™s involved in an ACTH Stim Test?
1๏ธโƒฃ Initial blood sample: We measure baseline cortisol levels.
2๏ธโƒฃ ACTH administration: A synthetic hormone is given to stimulate the adrenal glands.
3๏ธโƒฃ Second blood sample: After an hour, we recheck cortisol levels to assess the glands' response.

This information guides us in adjusting Moshโ€™s treatment plan to keep her feeling her best. With her calm and cooperative demeanor, Mosh makes our job so much easier! ๐Ÿฅฐ

If your pet is on long-term medication for adrenal conditions or showing symptoms like excessive thirst, appetite changes, or lethargy, talk to us about whether this test could help. Regular monitoring is key to ensuring their health and happiness.

Letโ€™s hear it for Mosh, our superstar of the week! ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿพ Meet Kaleesi ๐Ÿพ

This gorgeous 6-year-old Bulldog visited us recently for a routine vaccination, but during her examination, the vet noticed something concerning: Kaleesi had a purulent vaginal discharge and a fever (pyrexia).

A bedside ultrasound confirmed our suspicions โ€“ her uterus was fluid-distended, indicating pyometra, a serious and potentially life-threatening condition in unspayed female dogs.

Kaleesi was promptly admitted for surgery, where our team performed an ovariohysterectomy to remove her pus-filled uterus. She was also started on intravenous antibiotics to aid her recovery.

Weโ€™re happy to report that Kaleesi is on the mend and receiving lots of TLC from her family!

โš ๏ธ What is pyometra?
Pyometra is an infection of the uterus that can develop in unspayed dogs and cats, especially as they age. Symptoms can include:
โœ”๏ธ Vaginal discharge
โœ”๏ธ Lethargy
โœ”๏ธ Increased thirst
โœ”๏ธ Fever

If left untreated, it can be fatal.

๐Ÿ’‰ Spaying your pet not only prevents unwanted litters but can also protect them from serious conditions like pyometra. If you have questions about spaying or notice any unusual symptoms in your pet, donโ€™t wait โ€“ book a vet checkup right away.

Sending love and healing vibes to Kaleesi! ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿถ

๐Ÿพ Meet Molly! ๐Ÿพ

Molly is an adorable 8-month-old Poodle mix who recently visited us because sheโ€™d been sneezing a lot. ๐Ÿคง

After a thorough examination, weโ€™re working to figure out whatโ€™s causing her sneezesโ€”whether itโ€™s allergies, a foreign object, or something else. Molly has been such a brave and sweet girl throughout the process! ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿฉ

Sneezing in pets can happen for many reasons, so if your furry friend starts sneezing more than usual, itโ€™s always a good idea to get them checked out.

Wishing Molly a speedy recovery so she can get back to doing all her favorite thingsโ€”sneeze-free! ๐Ÿถโœจ
