The colder months have hit which is why it's important to give our senior pets some extra attention. Each year we offer a seniors package for both small and large animals tailored to target clinical ageing signs of our pets. These tailored tests can pick up early signs of arthritis, cushings disease and any abnormal lumps and bumps. Our seniors equine package is available for booking online with AFTERPAY available. 💦🌦☂️

This June and July we celebrate our senior pets! One of our most popular packages is back for two months and ends on the 30th July.
🐾As our pets age its important to stay on top of their changing health needs. Just like older humans, dog and cats can suffer from diseases associated with old age. Thankfully many of these issues are avoidable or treatable.
🐾For pets aged 7 years + (*Large breed dogs ie Great Dane are considered senior at 5 years +)

Shop and save online with our two day In-Sandout Sale. Due to the ongoing dry conditions in Perth and the shorter supply of hay we are continuing to see a large number of colic cases.
🏜 In-sandout is a pellet supplement containing psyllium husk and magnesium sulphate.
🌾Psyllium husk are used as a sand accumulation management tool that is used in feed. Some horses are resistant to the taste and texture of too much psyllium; therefore, combining the psyllium husk and magnesium sulphate in an easy to feed palatable pellet is the perfect option.

UTERINE PROLAPSE IN A COW!
It takes a village! This large uterine prolapse needed all hands on deck to be replaced late one evening, with Dr Codie, Dr Max, Dr Jess and nursing student Jacynta attending the call.

A uterine prolapse can happen after a difficult calving, and are an emergency; needing replacement as quick as possible to prevent infection.

For this girl, the placenta was removed and the uterus was cleaned. Sugar was placed on the uterus to reduce some of the swelling, and an epidural and quick sedation was administered to help get it back in. After a fair bit of muscle-work from all the vets and the farmers, sutures were placed to help prevent the uterus prolapsing again. She was kept on antibiotics and anti-inflammatories after surgery, and her and baby were up and drinking the next morning.

Thank god there's a shower back at the clinic for the vets!

Meet Gary the Cryptorchid!

Garry is a very rambunctious dude who came in for his routine castrate, but was found to have only had one testicle! The other one was found by ultrasound to be in his abdomen. Undescended testicles are more likely to form tumours and are at higher risk of torsion injuries.

Surgery was performed by Dr Codie to remove both testicles, with an abdominal incision made under a general anaesthetic to remove the undescended testicle, and a routine incision made through the sc***um to remove the external one. Anaesthetics in goats are always tricky, but Dr Brydie monitored Garry closely and he was the perfect patient throughout the procedure and recovered well!

We love our goats at West Coast Vets!

A common summer issue that affects horses is Haebronema infections. 🪰

Haebronema is a parasite that is spread by flies that lay eggs in sensitive areas. The most commonly affected areas include the p***s and eyelids.

These lesions can be severe and frequently require surgery to fix them due to their location and sensitivity on the horse.

Keep an eye out on your horse's especially this time of year when flies are prominent. If you have concerns and would like a consult please phone our team on 9393 3373
