Canine Exercise Talk for Pet People

Pet People this is for you!!

Bring with you a comfy chair or cushion and be ready for a great discussion on how to set your dog/s up for success with breed specific exercise and genetic fulfillment. Two much loved topics which I feel does not reach pet people enough.

I am going to talk about differences in muscle tissue fibre types and how this relates to various breeds for example: hunting breeds such as hounds, herding breeds, guarding breeds or retrieving breeds of dogs. I will also include how we go about exercise requirements for each breed type including biomechanics.

You will begin to look at exercise requirements from a completely different perspective for breed types.

We will also discuss growth and development phases and all life stages and how to adapt your plan for the future.

We will talk about how you go about incorporating genetic fulfillment for your dog within this plan. For your dog and importantly your breed of dog. Often young dogs get rehomed or pet people struggle with so called behavioral issues. Often these are actually just a reflection of a lack of understanding of just how important genetic fulfillment is for your dog.

So come join in on this great opportunity to share in this talk as I do encourage open discussion.

When you have a brilliant day watching the dogs you groom win in the ring.

Congratulations to Dr Sam Chu and Rosamontana Quicksilver aka Logan on winning Best In Breed in Working Dogs

And congratulations to Liz Walmsley and Wendy Wouters on the win for Ch.Bellegum Gingerlicious winning Best in Group and Best Exhibit in Show and Best Intermediate in Show. What a little pocket rocket Ginger is and I am having the best time honing my skills on this breed under the tutelage of Liz Walmsley.

Such a brilliant day working with my buddy Sheree Blake prepping the Australian Terriers from Terraochre Australian Terriers and Dianne Craig Stokes .

These little stunners are heading off to Adelaide and then Melbourne shows. Nearly three weeks on the road seeing the sights and competing.

Along on the journey are Neridah Sharrett and Stan Honnery with their Aussie Terriers and Bull Terriers.

Have a wonderful and successful time.

Black dogs are so tricky to photograph. More so if they have black eyes as well which is a shame as I have some lovely black coated dogs. However … I think I might have snagged it this time.

The gorgeous Portuguese Waterdog trimmed into a soft “very not true to breed style” but with a face and coat like that it was a fun groom.

This post by Lauren Fonte at The Holistic Hound Dog Training is worth the read.

Lauren explains why puppies and how long puppies go through normal “fear periods”

These phases also apply to the grooming side of a dogs life and it really good reason for making sure your pup is introduced to grooming early and then with very regular appointments.

It is normal for there to be fear periods for a pup BUT this is when we need to step up and have them pop in for weekly quick visits, short baths and blow drys, or just hang out. This is not the time to leave them until they are 12 months old before starting grooming.

Puppy’s will grow into dogs who will need grooming for the rest of their lives - this is a chance to make it a positive experience in their furry lives.

Some times you just need an “Emotional Support Terrier” to get you through the scaries of being groomed.

Luckily I have just the required “EST” Irish terrier from Terriers in Allis, for Tippy from RM Smith Stockfeeds.

Brave farm dog he maybe but brave in the bath he is not 😂😂😂 but he is learning quickly.

Have had such a brilliant time working these coats under the mentoring of Liz Walmsley. So lucky to combine my love of this breed with the chance to learn. Even better has been watching these fabulous boys achieve in the ring.

I had a bit of fun on the weekend and jumped back into the competition ring.

Toby and I came second in the Terrier class. Congratulations to Niaryn Blackley for placing first (plus best in group)and Sheree Blake for third. Well done to Rhiannon Mills for taking on her first Hand-stripping comp and placing first ! Well done

I am always so grateful to compete with a wonderfully supportive group of groomers and I love the camaraderie that we have in the ring.

Many many thanks to Dianne Craig Stokes for loaning me the wonderful Toby Tainquest Heads U Win.

Such a lovely boy who took the very long day in his stride and is a brilliant example of the Australian Terrier breed.

Thanks also to Dog Groomers Association of Western Australia for running events that allow us to grow as groomers.

Mmmm spring has sprung …those lovely warm days are happening, bees are humming flowers are blooming ….and fleas are making a comeback (not that they ever really go away).

It’s about now I like to remind everyone….

Please treat your four legged friends for fleas.

It doesn’t matter if you, “Only mix with dogs from nice homes” or “Don’t walk in dog parks” … your dogs or cats are all at risk of fleas.

So be an awesome pet owner and preventatively treat your pets for fleas.

There is a $20 charge for dogs or cats coming into the salon with fleas.

This is Harry….

Harry decided to go on an adventure ….under the pool decking ….and he got himself a little bit stuck …okay let’s be honest it was a LOT stuck.

So stuck under the decking ….his mum had to call the fire brigade (cos his dad was away)

Harry’s dad is going to be making a donation to the Fire brigade….which is going to sting a bit …cos Harry’s dad is a Bush Firey 😂😂

But the good news is Harry was able to get cleaned up with a refreshing bath and deep conditioning treatment and let’s be honest a hot bath fixes everything

Hi everyone - we are back to work tomorrow. That holiday sure went too fast with lots of adventures …mostly resulting in Murray sleeping somewhere.

Just a reminder : - if you have a temperature or are showing symptoms or have been to a hotspot …..please stay home and contact us - we will reschedule your appointment.

As per usual we have our QR code and check-in, sanitiser.

In the meantime, take a moment to check that you have shampoo and grooming supplies up to-date in case we go into the dreaded lockdown/quarantine. If you need anything let us know as we have stock available including brushes, shampoos, nail files and that brilliant detangler and fly repellent.

Although this year looks like it could be a bit a tricky one, Sylvia and I can’t wait to see all our furry clients and their owners.

Well that’s it for 2021!

I can say thank heavens for family that keep this little adventure ticking over when baths have tantrums.

Thank-you to our wonderful customers (especially those who know our coffee orders off by heart) and their furry companions that make this the best job I have ever had.
