🌷🌹🌼Spring time🌼🌹🌷

For some dogs, Spring time means allergies.🐾
Our dogs love a good scratch, but how do you know when it's a sign of an underlying allergy?

An allergy could be caused by bacterial and/or yeast infections, parasites, or can even be caused by something in their food or the surrounding environment.
Imagine not being able to tell someone that you are itchy!
Keep an eye out for one or more of the following symptoms:
- Redness
- Hair loss
- Regularly chewing, scratching, licking and/or biting
- Sores
- Scooting
- Darkened areas of the skin and more.

Remember that an allergy can't be fixed, it can only be managed!🐾

You know your dog better than anyone else, but if you see one or more of the following symptoms then we’d highly recommend getting in touch with us asap!🐾

🐾 MICROCHIPPING 🐾

Did you know that all dogs and cats in NSW (other than exempt cats and dogs), must be legally microchipped by the age of 12 weeks, or before being given away or sold?🐶🐱

Microchipping is the first step in registering your pet and enables their safe return home if they ever become lost.
Did you know, microchips can only be implanted by a certified professional?
This is to prevent the risk of infection, as well as to ensure they are correctly placed and located.
Once the microchip has been inserted, it is scanned to ensure it can be read by the microchip reader. The owner is then provided with their own copy of the microchip certificate to take to the council when they register the pet.🐾

Remember microchip implantation does NOT include council registration, which must be paid directly to the council.

Does your pet need microchipping?
Give us a call to book an appointment.

🐾WORMING REMINDER🐾

Are your pets up to date with worming?

🐈🦷 PROZYM DENTAL PRODUCTS 🦷🐕

Here at Wollondilly Animal Hospital we recommend Prozym dental products to keep your pet's mouth happy and healthy.
All of the Prozym products contain RF2. RF2 is a unique ingredient that assists in removing the biofilm which is created by bacteria in the mouth. Biofilm is the first stage in the formation of dental plaque, so by utilising these RF2 products, it can help reduce the likeliness of serious dental disease.

- Prozym dental sticks for dogs have a unique star shape and texture to ensure a longer chewing time, to help fight the build up of plaque and tartar.

- Prozym solution is a water additive for your pet's drinking water that is to be added daily to help freshen the breath and keep a healthy mouth. This product is for both cats and dogs.🐱🐶

- Prozym dental toothpaste kit for dogs and cats is a palatable poultry flavoured toothpaste with a soft bristled finger toothbrush. Brushing your pets teeth daily gives their mouth the best chance at avoiding serious dental disease.
⚠️NOTE: NEVER use human toothpaste on your pets!⚠️

‼🐾MYTHS BUSTED🐾‼️

Myth #1- Crates are inhumane and a cruel form of punishment!
NOT TRUE!
A crate can be a positive, safe space where your furry friend can learn to relax, recharge and settle down when they are feeling overstimulated or when life is a bit overwhelming.
Crates are also a great training tool for bedtime routines and toilet training!🐾

Myth #2- My dog will be uncomfortable and think I no longer love them!
NOT TRUE!
Your pet's crate should be nothing less than a sanctuary!
If your dog is scared by loud noises or just needs a break from lots of people and/other pets, the crate will be a safe haven for your dog. They will be very grateful for this space and will love you even more for providing it! 🐾

Myth #3- It is unnecessary to teach crate training as I will never used it!
NOT TRUE!
Let us set the scene: your doggo needs to have a day stay visit with your vet, instead of going home straight away with you (their loving owners).
Sounds a bit stressful, right?
It will be even more stressful for them when they haven't been taught to settle in a smaller space (e.g. a crate), compared to a doggo that has been crate trained. Those crate trained will generally be curled up and relaxed, therefore creating a happier and much more calm environment. 🐾
Will your doggo ever need to go into a boarding kennel?
Crate training will be their best friend! Wouldn't it be nice to know that they feel comfortable whilst they wait for your return!🐾

Crates are friends, not foe!🐕❤️

🐾 DON'T BE A SILLY SAUSAGE! KEEP YOUR PET'S MICROCHIP DETAILS UP TO DATE! 🐾

Did you know that all dogs and cats in NSW (other than exempt cats and dogs), must be legally microchipped by the age of 12 weeks, or before being given away or sold?🐶🐱

Microchipping is the first step in registering your pet and enables their safe return home if they ever become lost.
It is so important to keep your details up to date with the NSW Pet Registry, to ensure that your pet arrives back home safely if they ever escape. 🐾

🐈🦷🐾 NATIONAL PET DENTAL HEALTH MONTH 🐾🦷🐕

Here at Wollondilly Animal Hospital dental month is EVERY MONTH!
Your pet's oral hygiene (like us humans) is soooo important! Ensuring adequate dental hygiene in our pets can decrease the severity of periodontal disease.

What is periodontal disease?
Great question!
Periodontal disease starts with infection and inflammation of the gums (aka gingivitis). If this is left untreated, infection will often spread deeper into the tooth destroying the bone, therefore leading to extractions or the tooth falling out eventually.
Dental disease is one of the most common medical conditions seen by veterinarians, and if left untreated, can be quite painful. Over 80% of dogs and 70% of cats over the age of three have some sort of active dental disease.
Biofilm is the first stage in the formation of dental plaque. Plaque then chemically bonds to the tooth, forming Tartar.
Your pet's teeth may need to be treated and thoroughly cleaned with high speed dental tools and equipment whilst under a general anaesthesia. (See an example of one our patients below)

If you think that your pet is experiencing dental health issues, call your vet ASAP.

Our Story

Welcome to Wollondilly Animal Hospital!

Our practice opened in 2005, a few years after our sister clinic in The Oaks (Burragorang Veterinary Clinic). Dr Rhys Erskine saw a need for high quality veterinary services and wanted to bring this to the Wollondilly Shire. Our team are fortunate to have made many life long friendships with our clients and their furry friends, and hope to continue this with both new and existing clients.
