Ear infections are one of the most common problems we see in dogs!

👂 Frequent head shaking or ear scratching
👂 Redness or swelling in the ear
👂 A bad odor or dark discharge
👂 Sensitivity when you touch their ears

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s best to schedule a check-up.

Ear infections can be painful and may worsen without treatment. So thankfully, here at Curtis Street Vets we are blessed with the most up-to-date technology like our IDEXX InVue machine which can look at ear cytology with amazing accuracy.
This advanced tool allows us to examine ear samples on-site, providing fast, clear images of bacteria, yeast, or mites — so we can pinpoint the problem and start the right treatment right away.

📅 Call us today on (07 5549 0624) or book online for an ear exam — your dog will thank you with extra tail wags! 🐕✨

Heat Stress & BOAS: Why Flat-Faced Dogs Struggle in the Heat ☀️

As the weather warms up, you might notice your furry friend puffing and panting a little harder than usual — especially if they’re one of our adorable “squishy-faced” breeds like Pugs, French Bulldogs, British Bulldogs, or Boston Terriers. 🐶💨

These breeds have those irresistibly cute smooshy faces — but behind that charm is a condition called Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS).

Because their muzzles are shorter, there’s less room in their mouths and throats for their tongue and soft palate, which means their airways can become narrow and obstructed. Think of it like trying to breathe through a straw on a hot day — not fun! 🥵

You might notice:
🐾 Heavy panting
🐾 Exercise or heat intolerance
🐾 Loud snoring (sometimes louder than a freight train!)
🐾 Noisy breathing even at rest

The good news? There’s a surgical option that can make a huge difference.
BOAS surgery can involve shortening the soft palate, widening the nostrils, and removing the tonsils — all to help your pet breathe more freely, stay cooler, and enjoy life to the fullest.

BOAS is a progressive condition, meaning it often worsens with age if left untreated. Surgery can greatly improve quality of life, but the earlier it’s addressed, the better the results.

👇 Meet Hugo!
This handsome boy is 12 months post-op and thriving. He can now walk longer, cool down faster, and (to his family’s delight) snore far less! 😴💙

Our experienced vets perform BOAS surgery regularly right here in our clinic, and we’re always happy to chat about whether it might be right for your pup.

📞 Give us a call on (07) 5549 0624 to book a consultation or find out more.

Let’s help your flat-faced friend breathe easy this summer! ☀️🐾

----- Paralysis Ticks and a Preventaive Injection for Dogs -----

Paralysis Ticks and Fleas-

In the last few weeks we have seen a significant surge in tick paralysis in our furry friends in all of SEQ. In the last few weeks, we have seen 2-3 Tick Paralysis patients each week! In Australia, especially QLD and NSW paralysis ticks pose a major threat, which are able to cause serious life-threatening harm to our beloved dogs with just one bite.

Ensuring the safety of our dogs from paralysis ticks is vital throughout any season of the year, especially living in Queensland! This may seem daunting if you have to remember giving them a tablet every month, however here at Curtis St Vets we are here to help.

With our lives being busy and time seeming to slip away, let us take monthly chews off your to-do-list and let our experineced and compassionate Vets give 12 months of protection with just one injection.

This injection is a conveniant solution to Paralysis Ticks and Fleas and to learn more please call us on, (07 5549 0624).

I Rat Bait I

In Australia most rat baits are anticoagulants working to prevent production of clotting factors. As the body stores are reduced over 3-5 days, clinical clotting defects occur. Pets can be poisoned by rat bait from direct ingestion or if they have eaten a rat that has ingested rat bait.

Signs of rat bait poisoning (occur after 3-5 days after ingestion)
1. Diarrhoea (sometimes with blood)
2. Unexplained bleeding
3. Pale gums and tongue
4. Lethargy
5. Coughing or difficulty breathing

I Ticks I

Ticks are a small insect (around 3-5 mm long) of the arachnid family. There are many species of tick but the one of most concern is the paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus).
The paralysis tick can be found along the Eastern Coast of Australia. They can be found from as far as North Queensland to Victoria! Other common types of ticks you may find on your pet are bush ticks or brown dog ticks.

Such a small insect can cause vomiting, difficulty breathing, drooling, and changes in their bark or meow. Loss of coordination and balance and weakness, especially in the hind legs and paralysis.
