For our fourth day of National Animal Poison Prevention Week, let’s talk about rat bait! 🐭

Rat bait is often used to control rodent populations, but it can be extremely toxic to pets if ingested. Many rat poisons contain anticoagulants, which prevent blood from clotting and can lead to internal bleeding. Signs that your pet may have ingested rat bait include lethargy, coughing, or difficulty breathing.

To keep your pets safe, always store rat bait in secure locations that are out of reach. If you suspect your pet has ingested rat bait, contact your vet immediately for guidance and treatment. Let’s keep our furry friends safe from these hidden dangers!

For our third day of National Animal Poison Prevention Week, let’s discuss xylitol! 🍬

Xylitol is a sugar substitute commonly found in peanut butter, sugar-free gum, lollies, and some baked goods. It is highly toxic to dogs and can cause a rapid insulin release, leading to hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar). Signs of xylitol poisoning include vomiting, loss of coordination, seizures, and in severe cases, liver failure.

To prevent this, always check labels and keep products containing xylitol out of reach of pets. If you think your pet has ingested something with xylitol, contact your vet immediately. Let’s keep our furry friends safe!

For our 2nd day of National Animal Poison Prevention Week, let’s discuss household plants! 🌿

Many common plants can be toxic to pets. For example, lilies, azaleas, and poinsettias are particularly harmful to cats and dogs. Signs of plant poisoning can include vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, and in severe cases, organ failure.

To prevent this, research any plants you bring into your home and opt for pet-safe options. If you suspect your pet has ingested a toxic plant, contact your vet immediately. Let’s keep our homes safe for our furry companions!

For our first day of National Animal Poison Prevention Week, let’s talk about chocolate! 🍫

Chocolate is a common treat that can be very dangerous for pets. It contains theobromine, which can be toxic to dogs and cats. Signs of chocolate poisoning include vomiting, diarrhoea, rapid breathing, increased heart rate, and seizures.

To prevent this, always keep chocolate out of reach and educate family and friends about the dangers of sharing human treats with pets. If you suspect your pet has ingested chocolate, contact your vet immediately. Stay safe, everyone!

🐶Canine Bloat🐶

What is GDV?
Canine bloat, or gastric dilation and volvulus (GDV), is a life-threatening condition primarily affecting large, deep-chested dogs. It involves a gas-filled stomach that twists, requiring emergency surgery for correction.

What causes this condition?
The exact cause is unknown, but it often occurs in large breed dogs that eat or drink quickly and then exercise. Sometimes it only leads to gastric dilation (bloat), but in other cases, the gas-filled stomach twists, blocking both the entrance and exit.

Is GDV serious?
Yes. This is probably the most serious non-traumatic conditions seen in dogs. Immediate veterinary attention is required. Any dog over 10kg can get this, although it seems large, deep chested breeds are more prone.

Additional facts about GDV:
The distended stomach pushes the posterior rib cage so that the dog appears swollen or bloated. This is most obvious on the left side and gentle tapping of swelling just behind the last rib often produces hollow, drum like sounds. The enlarged stomach presses on the diaphragm and breathing becomes laboured. Ultimately, the dog collapses and the huge size of the abdomen can be seen as the dog lies on its side.

What can be done?
Veterinary assistance must be sought immediately to relieve pressure on the stomach and internal organs. The vet may first try to pass a stomach tube; if that fails due to twisting, a large needle may be used to release pressure. Once stabilized, major abdominal surgery is needed to reposition the stomach, which may be delayed until the patient can undergo anaesthesia.

Can the condition be prevented?
Gastropexy (surgical attachment of the stomach to the body wall) is the most effective means of prevention. Careful attention to diet, feeding and exercise regimens may help to prevent gastric dilation.
