Zoonosis: What Is It & Why Should You Know About It?

Today, while chatting with a new member of our community, they asked me: "What exactly is a Zoonosis?".
As someone with a background in the veterinary industry, it's a term I'm quite familiar with, especially when working with rescues and foster animals. But it's not as commonly talked about outside of that world, so let's break it down!

A zoonosis (plural: zoonoses) is an infectious disease that can be transmitted between animals and humans — and vice versa. In other words, certain diseases can jump from animals to humans and sometimes from humans to animals. 🐾➡️👤

You might be surprised to learn that some of these diseases are more common than you think!
Here are a few examples:
Tetanus
Giardia
Hydatid tapeworms
Salmonella
Ringworm
Sarcoptic mange

Whether you're working with pets, fostering animals, or simply interacting with wildlife, it's important to understand how these diseases spread and how to protect both yourself and your furry friends.

For more information on zoonotic diseases, check out this great resource from Animal Health Australia: https://animalhealthaustralia.com.au/zoonotic-disease/

Learning about zoonotic diseases can sound a bit scary, but the good news is that with some simple practices, you can greatly reduce the risk of transmission between you and your pets.
Here’s some tips to help prevent transmission:
🐾Always wash your hands thoroughly after handing any species of animal. Use warm water and soap. Scrub and dry on a disposable towel if possible, or
wash towels regularly in warm water.
🐾Do not allow pets to sleep on your bed.
🐾Wash animals’ bedding regularly and line dry if possible.
🐾Do not allow animals to lick your face. If this occurs, rinse the area well.
🐾Do not kiss your animal! There are other ways to express your love and affection
🐾Clear up all animal faeces from your garden or litter tray regularly. Wear disposable gloves for this task.
🐾Vacuum your carpets and floors regularly.
🐾Good Hygiene: Disinfect cleanable surfaces and bedding with a suitable product recommended for your animals breed and species.
🐾Worm your animals appropriately according to species requirement.
🐾Have gloves and sanitiser in your car if handling wildlife.

Stay informed, stay safe, and always keep your pets' wellness in mind!

Kitten season is HERE now! Desexing your cat could make a big impact to our community, reducing unwanted kittens and stray cats in our community. Don't forget to connect with George Town Councils Desexing program or if you already have a cat with kittens talk to Just Cats Tasmania about when you can desex your cat before she falls pregnant again.

This is a great reminder for bird owners to stay vigilant about biosecurity measures to keep their birds safe from disease. By taking these steps, owners can minimize the risk of spreading illness within their flock and to other birds. Keeping a clean and controlled environment is key, along with having a solid plan for quarantine and early detection.

To sum up:

🐔Clean water and well-maintained feeders kept inside sheds.
🐔Regularly clean poultry sheds, yards, aviaries, and equipment.
🐔Limit contact between your birds and wild birds.
🐔Wash your hands before and after handling birds or eggs.
🐔Establish a quarantine area for sick birds.
🐔Connect with a vet for care or transport guidance.
🐔Conduct daily health checks for early signs of illness.
🐔Use appropriate PPE to reduce disease spread.

It’s essential to stay informed about diseases like avian influenza and to be proactive in reporting any signs. Protecting your birds requires attention to both their environment and health.

Although there are currently no known outbreaks of high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) in Tasmania, poultry owners should remain vigilant.
Having simple biosecurity measures in place to protect your birds from disease. Make sure you:
🐔 Provide clean water.
🐔 Keep feeders and water inside sheds away from wild birds.
🐔 Keep poultry sheds, yards and aviaries clean, including equipment.
🐔 Restrict contact between your birds and wild birds.
🐔 Always wash your hands before and after handling birds and eggs.

🌟 Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming over 13 families to our Pet Food Pantry! 🌟

Not only did we provide essential food supplies, but we also connected with owners on health and wellbeing outcomes for their pets.
🤩Three of our visitors were directed to the council’s desexing program, ensuring better care for their furry companions.
🤩Connected with owners around allergy supports and nutritional needs
🤩Beds, toys, shampoos and flea treatment was warmly embraced.

A special thank you to George Town Neighbourhood House for supporting this program and to Dr. Martina McPeace© from Hint of Thyme Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture for Animals, who joined us for a valuable community conversation on "We Are What We Eat."
