This week we are sadly saying farewell to Nurse Vanessa 👋🏼

Ness joined the team in 2021, dedicated to providing the best standard of care to our patients! We will dearly miss her cheeky smile, empathy, and beautiful handwritten sympathy cards 🐾 🌈

It’s been a pleasure working with Vanessa & we wish her all the best in her new role❤️

TICK ALERT!
A paralysis tick has been found and confirmed on a pet in our local area. This is most likely due to the increased rain events making the conditions live-able for them currently. They most likely are coming here from Toowoomba areas via wildlife.
Please be diligent at giving your pets monthly flea and tick treatment on the day of the month required, a yearly injectable flea and tick needle is also available for easy administration and peace of mind. Tick treatments can take 72 hours to have high enough levels so daily tick checking is also suggested. This involves placing your fingers on your pets fur and stroking backwards towards the head. Concentrating on the head especially ears and chin, but ticks can lodge anywhere on the body.
Signs of tick envenomation are difficulties walking or paralysis, weakness, vomiting, struggling to breathe or rapid breath rate, change in voice/bark/meow, just a bit not themselves may be the earliest sign.
Foals, calves and other small ruminants can be affected by paralysis ticks as well showing similar signs.
If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us via email at [email protected] or call us at 07 46932233.

1 out of 2 emergencies yesterday in our clinic. We were presented with a 13 week old cattle dog puppy who had eaten rat bait 🐀❗️and this affected the patient quite quickly - showing signs of troubled breathing, limping, lethargy and pale gums.
With luck a grey hound was booked in for surgery on the very same day and we were able to do a blood transfusion - with owner consent🩸taking blood from the jugular vein as pictured and it was transferred into a blood bag.

With constant care around the clock on our little patient. The puppy was able to be reunited and sent home with her family, who were over the moon with her recovery 🐶🩺🤍

Christmas Countdown 30 DAYS 🥳🎄🎁

It is not long till the best day of the year is here! So you know what that means... Christmas competition time 😝

This year we are going to be placing names in a bucket for whoever purchases a dog and/or cat preventative within the December month, that is including tick treatment. This will then be drawn on the 23rd December for both dog and cat prizes.

It is important our pets are treated with preventatives to avoid nasty critters. With spring ending and summer on the way, paralysis tick activity becomes more active, as pet owners embark on more outdoor adventures, increasing exposure to their pets.

5 Common places ticks hide on dogs and cats
- Under the collar
- Private areas
- Inside/outside of ears
- Between the toes
- Near the eyelids

There will also be a competition for BEST coloring for children, prizes to be won!! We will have a few different templates to choose from - collect from our clinic. This will also be drawn on the 23rd December, so be sure to hand them in before this date! 🤩

Tips for warm weather (Pet Edition) ☀️

Owning a pet is one of life’s great joys but with that also comes responsibility. As we all know the summer months can get quite heated! We want to stay as hydrated and as cool as possible, same goes for our fur babies. They can feel the heat much more than humans 🐶🐱

Here are a few tips:

* Give pets extra water - this may include multiple water bowls around the house hold or this may involve a small pool for them to swim in with YOUR supervision
* Fill an empty container or drink bottle with water and freeze it
* Do not overdo outdoor exercise - would recommend exercise for yours pets in the early mornings or late afternoons, as it is cooler
* Stop often for shaded breaks - this will help give yourself and your pet a must needed break away from the sun. Believe it or not, our pets can get sunburns too 🌳
* Protect paws from hot surfaces - just like humans, we wouldn’t want to be walking on hot surfaces barefoot, so let’s be mindful of our pets paws too
* DO NOT leave your pet in the car alone!! Even with the windows down, a car can quickly become a furnace 🔥
* Pets with long coats can be clipped to increase comfort to the hot weather
* If you have an outdoor cat, try to keep them inside between 10am-2pm when it is hottest and be sure to provide them with cooling techniques (ice packs, air-con etc)
* For heat stressed birds, gently spray water from a spray bottle onto the bird or use a cool damp sponge under the wings, feet and beak. Be sure they have plenty of access to fresh water 💦

❗️Heatstroke❗️
Heat stroke is a very serious, life threatening condition. It can cause damage to the pets internal organs and can become rapidly fatal where urgent treatment is required.

Signs of heatstroke in dogs and cats are 🐕🐈‍⬛
* Panting
* Vomiting
* Warm + dry skin
* Collapsing
* Increased heart rate
* Breathing distress
* Muscle tremors
* Drooling and salivating
This list goes on…

So please be mindful this summer as temperatures will increase. Let’s do our part as pet owners to provide and care for our fur babies in these warmer months 🐾🩺

If your pet is suffering from a life threatening heatstroke, please bring your pet into the clinic and our wonderful team of Vets and Nurses will respond immediately ☺️

Did you know we stock a year-long flea and paralysis tick protection with just ONE injection for dogs ONLY 😮

It provides treatment and prevention of flea infestations and controls flea allergy dermatitis for 12 months (1 year) as well as paralysis and brown dog ticks for 12 months.
A single injection will control flea infestations on the dog within 2 days and will show full effect on ticks within 3 days - it should be administered at least 3 days before the dog is exposed to the paralysis tick.
However, this injection can not be used in puppies younger than 6 months or breeding, pregnant and lactating dogs, so please continue to use appropriate worming your Veterinarian has recommended.

When your dog is administered with the yearly injection, we will be offering 6 months free of worming!!

If you would like to know more about the yearly injection, contact us on our clinic number 07 4693 2233 or head to the clinic for a chat. 😄🐾🐶
