Dog Grooming, styling, washing, clipping services About me, Debbie. I am a former registered breeder and former dog exhibitor.

My love for dogs extends to when I was a child, being given a Basset Hound. I fell in love with this breed and as an adult, began to show and then later breed. I have had a few breeds over the years, and have handled may different breeds for others, having an extensive understanding of canine body language and respect for them all. I now enjoy the quieter side of life with my pet Cavaliers whom ar

e very much part of the family. I like to get to know your pooches and form a bond with them, one of trust and faith. When you leave your beloved dog with me, you will know it's in good capable hands, and enjoy a stress free pampering.

Long Hot Summer

With summer on its way and some days already getting into the 30’s, We’ve certainly been feeling the heat, but remember that our pets do too.

Unlike us, cats & dogs can not remove excess clothing or sweat to cool themselves down – instead, they must pant to reduce their body temperature. Unfortunately, this method of heat loss is less efficient than sweating & uses more energy. This increased energy load can sometimes lead to even more heat production.

Our pets are therefore prone to a condition called Heatstroke. This occurs when an animal’s ability to lose heat is overcome & their internal body temperature begins to rise. This can be affected by a number of factors, such as: ambient temperature, humidity, presence of shade, obesity, age, breed etc.

The most common situations that animals are seen for Heatstroke are:

1. When an animal is left outdoors in hot/humid conditions without adequate shade.
2. When exercised in hot/humid weather.
3. When left in a car – even on a relatively cool day (21 degrees) studies have proven that the temperature within a vehicle may increase by an average of 22°C within one hour regardless of outside temperature.

Initially the animal appears distressed, and will pant excessively and become restless. As their body temperature increases, they may drool large amounts of saliva from the nose and/or mouth & may become unsteady on their feet. You may notice the gums turning blue/purple or bright red in colour, which is due to inadequate oxygen.

What to Do ❓

• Remove your pet from the environment where the hyperthermia occurred.
• Move your pet to shaded and cool environment, and direct a fan on them.
• If possible, determine re**al temperature and record it (normal 38-39.5°C)
• Begin to cool the body by placing cool, wet towels over the back of the neck, in the armpits, and in the groin region (remember to change the towels every few minutes or they may act to retain heat further). You may also wet the ear flaps and paws with cool water. Directing a fan on these wetted areas will help to speed evaporative cooling. Contact your local vet without delay.

What NOT to Do ❓

• Do not use cold water or ice for cooling.
• Do not overcool the pet.
• Do not attempt to force water into your pet’s mouth, but you may have fresh cool water ready to offer should your pet be alert and show an interest in drinking.
• Do not leave your pet unattended for any length of time.

Rapid cooling is extremely important. While ice or cold water may seem logical, its use is not advised.

Cooling the innermost structures of the body will actually be delayed, as ice or cold water will cause superficial blood vessels to shrink, effectively forming an insulating layer of tissue to hold the heat inside. Tap water is more suitable for effective cooling. Simple cooling of the body temperature does not, however, address the accompanying potentially fatal events so animals should be seen promptly by a veterinarian.

Remember to keep yourselves & your pets cool this summer with plenty of shade, lots of water & contact Vets if you have any issues.
