Home euthanasia is something I am very passionate about providing for our much loved pets.

Saying goodbye to a beloved companion is hard enough, but the sterile environment of a surgery can make the pain all the more acute. Vets say people are using a home service in greater numbers and owners say it's making all the difference.

The pet food that has poisoned many dogs in Gippsland recently contained the meat from animals that had eaten a poisonous plant found in Northern Australia.

An eastern Victoria pet food supplier linked to a cluster of dog deaths expands its voluntary meat recall to include horse meat.

Would you like your dog to be a blood donor and save lives?

https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2247845125320394&id=350339295070996

We are recruiting new doggy donors for our community blood bank! If you think your brave boy or girl might be a potential life-saver, please read on!

πŸ₯πŸ”¬ WHY DOES CARE NEED A BLOOD BANK?

Just like human emergency rooms, CARE sees numerous trauma cases, as well as pets with bleeding disorders and cancer. Many of these animals are in need of lifesaving blood transfusions. Regular blood donations by healthy donors means that we can maintain an adequate supply of blood products and save more lives. Our program veterinarians are members of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) and the American Association of Veterinary Blood Banks, and we work to maintain the highest standards of care for both our donors and recipients.

β€οΈπŸ’‰ WHY USE VOLUNTEER DONORS?

We promote the use of volunteer donors because we strongly believe that saving the life of one dog should not occur at the expense or wellbeing of another. Our blood donors live in loving, private homes within the community.

πŸ‘©πŸ»β€βš•οΈπŸ’¬ IS MY DOG ELIGIBLE TO BE A DONOR?

In order to enrol in our donor program, your dog must meet the following eligibility criteria:

- Aged between 2 and 6 years.
- Weight of 25kg or more.
- A calm, friendly demeanour.
- Known history of good health.
- Has never had a blood transfusion.
- Fully vaccinated.
- Regularly wormed.
- Desexed.
- Able to participate in regular donations at CARE (up to 4 times per year).

If you answered yes to each of the above, your dog may be a candidate to join our community blood bank program!

**Dementia in pets**

Did you know that older animals can get dementia, just like people?

Some of the signs you might see include:

- Sleep disturbances
- Generalised anxiety
- Inappropriate vocalisation (howling, barking or whining)
- Repetitive behaviour, such as pacing
- Staring at walls
- Fewer social interactions
- Disorientation and getting lost

Have a read of the article below and take your dog to the vet if you suspect this might be happening to rule out other causes and talk about ways of managing it.

Dogs are living longer these days thanks to better veterinary care. But there's a downside that's taking many dog owners by surprise.

Children and loss of a pet

It can be hard to talk to children about death. It is something many people struggle with when facing the loss of a pet. Children are often very matter of fact about these things though, and often cope better than we do as adults. It is important to use simple but clear language about death, as using phrases like 'put to sleep' are confusing and can make kids scared of going to sleep and never waking up.

Play School has recently aired a new episode called 'Beginnings and Endings' which talks about birth and death. Have a read of the article about it below and check out the program on iview.

For the first time in 53 years, the ABC show Play School openly discusses the issue of death and what happens when someone's grandpa or pet fish dies.

It appears the page may have been hacked and a strange post put up about star signs of all things! I only just realised and removed it. Apologies everyone.

Hills Pet Food Recall

There has been a recall on certain batches of Hills canned dog foods due to vitamin D levels being too high. This can lead to several issues including problems with the kidneys. If your pet eats any of the foods listed on their website as being a problem, check the batch number and return it to your stockist.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition is voluntarily recalling select canned dog food products due to potentially elevated levels of vitamin D.Β

Does your pet hate fireworks? With New Year's eve fast approaching, it can be a scary time for many animals. Have a look at these handy hints from the Pet Behaviour Vet:

It's that dreaded time of the year again: New Year's Eve!🀩πŸ₯³πŸŽ‰ (also known as 'the apocalypse' by many of my patients!).

I was originally going to keep this infographic succinct... but couldn't help myself as there is just way too much good information to share! I did manage to keep it to 6 main points though.

Please leave any questions in the comments below and I'll do my best to answer them!

Have a happy New Year!
