🌟 Tips for Keeping Your Pet Safe on Valentine's Day 🌟
Valentine's Day is often a sweet occasion, with many of us celebrating the day of love with chocolates, lollies and flowers. However foods containing chocolate or xylitol, along with some flower species can be dangerous and even potentially fatal for our pets.
Chocolate 🍫
Chocolate is toxic to both dogs and cats and can result in significant illness. Chocolate is toxic because it contains a chemical called theobromine, as well as caffeine. Theobromine is the predominant toxin in chocolate and is very similar to caffeine. Dogs and cats cannot metabolise theobromine and caffeine as well as people can, and this makes them more sensitive to the chemicals’ effects.
Xylitol 🍬
Xylitol is a sweetener that is most commonly found in food products but can be found in other consumer goods such as medications, sunscreen, makeup and toothpaste.
Consumption can be dangerous for your dog, causing low blood sugar and liver injury.
Flowers 💐
Many popular bouquet flowers can lead to serious symptoms in dogs and cats, such as seizures, breathing problems and liver failure.
Flowers that are toxic to pets include: tulips, azaleas, birds of paradise, lillies, carnations, chrysanthemums, daffodils and rhododendrons.
Flowers that are safe for pets include: Roses, orchids, daisies, sunflowers and snapdragons.
❗️If you suspect that your pet has ingested chocolate, xylitol or toxic flowers please seek immediate veterinary attention. ☎
