💙 Happy Father’s Day! 💙

Today we’re celebrating all the amazing dads out there. Human and animal alike!

One of the best examples of fatherhood in the animal kingdom comes from our Southern Cassowaries 🪶. After mum lays the eggs, it’s dad who takes full responsibility, incubating them for around 50 days, and then raising and protecting the chicks for up to nine months.

As a critically endangered species, every cassowary chick is precious, and it’s thanks to the dads that they get the best possible start in life.

From our family at Billabong Zoo to yours — Happy Father’s Day! 💙

September 7 — National Threatened Species Day 🐾
Today marks the anniversary of the passing of the last known Tasmanian Tiger, also called the Thylacine, which died at Hobart Zoo on this day in 1936.
This powerful day of remembrance has become an opportunity for zoos and wildlife organisations across the country to shine a spotlight on animals that are at risk of extinction, and the urgent need to protect them.

Here at Billabong Zoo, we are proud to care for a wide range of vulnerable, endangered and critically endangered species, and to play an active role in educating the public and supporting conservation efforts both here in Australia and around the globe.

🐨 Our flagship species is the Koala, and our zoo maintains one of the largest breeding populations in New South Wales
We have supported successful breeding programs for decades and work closely with other zoos to protect this iconic species through genetics sharing and habitat education

🌿 But our conservation reach goes further
As you walk through the zoo you will find:

🦘 Yellow footed Rock Wallabies and Lumholtz Tree Kangaroos
🦁 All three of our big cat species including Snow Leopards, Lions and Cheetahs
🦜 Critically threatened birds such as the Glossy Black Cockatoo, Orange bellied Parrot and Bush Stone Curlew
🐧 Little Penguins, facing pressures from pollution and habitat loss
🐾 Mammals like Southern Hairy nosed Wombats and Spotted tailed Quolls
🦤 The majestic Southern Cassowary, vital for rainforest seed dispersal
🐢 Reptiles from around the world, including Indian Star Tortoises vulnerable to illegal pet trade
🦎 And the Fijian Crested Iguana, one of the rarest lizards on Earth

We are one of a select few zoos in Australia part of the Fijian Crested Iguana breeding program, and we proudly support overseas projects that include habitat restoration, invasive species removal, and local school education in Fiji to ensure a future for this misunderstood species.

🧠 Our keepers work passionately to share this knowledge
Whether during scheduled talks or encounters, they help patrons understand how ecosystems function, what makes these animals so well adapted to survive, and why we must act now to secure their future

🐊 One of the most inspiring examples we share is during our saltwater crocodile presentation, where guests learn how croc species in Australia were once almost wiped out. Thanks to out of the box conservation strategies, they have now made a full recovery — a reminder that when science, government, community and zoos work together, change is possible

🧬 We must not forget our primates
Billabong Zoo is home to five species including Golden Lion Tamarins, which are critically endangered in their native Brazil, along with Pygmy Marmosets, Cotton top Tamarins, Common Marmosets and Black headed Spider Monkeys, all of which face serious challenges from habitat fragmentation and the pet trade

🌱 And beyond our walls, there is even more being done
Zoos across the country contribute to breed to release programs, helping endangered animals get back into the wild. These include programs for Eastern Bettongs, Western Swamp Tortoises, Regent Honeyeaters and more.
Through partnerships, research and a shared vision, we can help restore wild populations to healthy levels

🫶 Every visit, every talk and every donation helps
Whether you are buying a ticket to the zoo or joining one of our educational programs, you are helping us fight extinction
So today, we reflect, we remember the thylacine, and we recommit ourselves to doing everything we can to make sure no other species shares its fate

📺 Billabong Zoo on NBN News Tonight! 🎥
We had reporter Kendra and cameraman Andrew from NBN News at the zoo today with our keeper Nick learning about a variety of native non venomous and venomous snake species including our Common Death Adder, filming a feature on snake safety. Make sure you tune in to tonight’s bulletin to see the story!

🐍 Snake Season in Australia
As the weather warms, snakes come out of brumation (a winter dormancy period). They’re now on the move, searching for food and mates, which means more encounters with people.

Australia is home to the world’s 10 most venomous land snakes. While fatalities are rare, our snakes have evolved incredibly potent venom for catching prey.

The Inland Taipan (world’s most venomous snake) lives in remote areas with little human contact.

The Eastern Brown Snake, however, is common in our region and is the snake involved in most of Australia’s 3–5 snakebite fatalities each year.

⚠️ Snake Safety Tips
Most bites occur after a snake has been seen, often when people try to catch or kill it. Prevention is key:

1️⃣ If very close (within 1m): Stand still. Sudden movements can startle a defensive strike.
2️⃣ If a few metres away: Step back and give the snake space to make a calm decision of which direction it would like to travel.
3️⃣ At home: If a snake is in your garden or backyard you can make the decisionof leavingit be, and applying cautionwhen in thise areas. But if children or pets are around, or it enters your house calling a licensed reptile relocator is often the better option for all involved.
4️⃣ Protect yourself outdoors: Thick boots and long pants (denim or heavy cotton) provide real protection, as most venomous snakes have teeth/ fangs only 2–5mm long.

🩹 First Aid for Snakebite
If the worst happens:

✔️ Apply a compression immobilisation bandage immediately (found in most first aid kits). Keep yourself still and calm.
✔️ Snakebite kits that loop to your belt are excellent for always having one on hand.
✔️ Aim for firm, even pressure (like with a sprained ankle). Bandages with indicator markings help ensure it’s not too tight or loose.
✔️ Once applied, mark the bite site and note the time of the bite and time of bandage application. This information helps doctors decide if antivenom is required as they assess your symptoms.
✔️ Remember: not every bite from a venomous snake will be an invenimation. Some are what is referred to as a “dry bites.” Reguardless, allways apply the appropriate first aid and seek medical attention.
❌ Do not try to catch the snake or bring it to hospital this is how many people end up bitten more times than just one. Medical personnel aren't trained to identify wildlife and have good processes in place for assessing and treading patients whom have received bites from animals.

Call an ambulance or have someone take you straight to hospital. Medical staff have the tools to diagnose and treat snakebite safely.

Snakes aren’t out to get us, they’re simply going abouttheir day. With awareness, prevention, and the right first aid knowledge, we can all stay safe this snake season.
