Nova is a beautiful 8 month old Siberian husky looking for a permanent home and is located in Port Macquarie. She's a classic cheeky girl, knows basic commands - sit, stay, down, shake, speak - and is obviously highly intelligent. She is still learning and would definitely benefit from some professional training. She is fully vaccinated. Her devoted owners are looking to rehome her due to a change in their living arrangements.
Nova needs a good sized back yard to run around in and expend some of her high energy, she needs secure fencing (preferably colourbond) and lockable gates as added security. She deserves a good and loving home where she will be an integral part of the family. Preferably an experienced husky owner or large breed owner with no pocket pets. She is not suited to being at home all day alone, so someone who works from home could be ideal.
For more information on Nova, in the first instance please contact Wendy on 0418 233 633. NOVA HAS NOW FOUND HER NEW HOME.

Spring has arrived and has given us a few extra things to think about! First, snakes are definitely out and about and already been spotted. The safest way to prevent snake bite is to call a professional snake handler as quickly as possible after seeing the snake. Better to be safe than sorry!
Second, TICK season is also upon us in a big way. It seems that the deadly paralysis ticks don't clock off for their winter break like they used to - our pets need yearly protection to keep them safe. Pet owners need to check their pets every day. This includes running fingertips through the pet's body, checking inside the ears and between the toes.
Protect your pet all year round by using products specifically aimed at killing and repelling ticks.
Third, it is not uncommon for pet owners to leave their dogs in the car while running quick errands. Now is a good time to start being aware that in the heat of summer dogs should not be left in the car - even for a minute! Canine fatalities have been known to occur in just 6 minutes - and that's with the widows partially wound down. The maximum inside-car temperature reaches a high level very quickly. As the temperature increases, the animal can become stressed and start to dehydrate. We will keep harping on this topic throughout the summer months!!

MICROCHIP REMINDER!
Port Macquarie Animal Shelter has reported a significant increase in animals that are not microchipped coming into the shelter over the past few months. It is extremely important to ensure your animals are microchipped and your personal information is up to date. Microchipping helps lessen the burden on animal shelters or vets by identifying lost pets and reuniting them with their owners and is a LEGAL REQUIREMENT under the Companion Animals Act.
The Port Macquarie Animal Shelter offers a microchipping service at a minimal cost of $20 and all your information will then be added to the NSW database. This service is available by appointment Monday to Friday. Contact the shelter on 6583 3488.

Most of us enjoy some chocolate at Easter, but sadly so do our dogs! With Easter celebrations only 10 days away, it is timely to remind all dog owners about the dangers of letting dogs share your Easter bunny. Easter is the busiest time of the year for veterinarians dealing with dogs that have ingested chocolate. We know how inquisitive dogs can be, and how they can't resist foods that may be lying around. It is the theobromine (mostly) and caffeine in chocolate that results in the common signs of chocolate toxicity in dogs - vomiting, diarrhoea, panting, tremors, seizures, high heart rates, abnormal heart rhythm, coma and possible death.
If your dog ingests chocolate it is best to call your vet for advice. If you dog shows any of the signs above, take it to your vet or emergency vet immediately. It's simple really: Keep all chocolate locked away and from areas dogs are able to get to, and make sure everyone in the house is aware and diligent in keeping their chocolate away from their pets. Happy Easter everyone from Midcoast Dog Rescue.

Is your dog micro-chipped? Does your dog wear a collar with his name and your up-to-date contact details on a tag?
It is amazing how many dogs in the Port Macquarie/Hastings area and beyond are NOT micro-chipped - even though it is illegal for your dog not to be micro-chipped.
It is also amazing how many owners forget to change details with the registry when they move from one house address to another.
Just remember if your dog gets out from its yard, it is a lot quicker and easier to get your pet safely back to you, without having to rely on the kindness of strangers and the local vets or council pound.

Snake bite awareness for dog and cat owners: There are 23 species of snakes found around the NSW Mid North Coast region. Species such as Brown snakes, Black snakes, Rough scaled snakes, to name a few, are highly venomous.

Signs and symptoms: Trembling, Salivation, Vomiting, Agitation, Difficulty breathing, Weakness or paralysis, Pale Gums, Dilated pupils, Blood in urine, Collapse.

If you think your pet has been bitten by a snake, keep calm and quiet, and contact your nearest veterinary clinic immediately.
The chances of recovery are much greater if your pet is treated early.

DO NOT TRY TO CATCH OR KILL THE SNAKE.
(It's illegal and the most common cause of snake bites!)

Midcoast Dog Rescue urges pet owners not to make their pets wait in HOT CARS!!
MDR keeps harping on this topic - it is not uncommon for pet owners to leave their dogs in the car while running quick errands. In the heat of summer, this can cause discomfort, heatstroke and even death. Canine fatalities have been known to occur in just 6 minutes - and that's with the windows partially wound down - the maximum inside-car temperature reaches a high level very quickly. As the temperature increases, the animal can become very stressed and start to dehydrate.
The only way to avoid this is to NOT leave them in the car - even for a minute!

05/12/2021

CHRISTMAS can be a DANGEROUS time for your pet! Please avoid the following...
Ham or fat from the roast marrow bones - these can cause Pancreatitis due to the high fat content.
Chocolate - very palatable but can be fatal. As little as 50g can poison a small dog...this includes chocolate decorations/coins!
Cooked bones - can splinter and become caught in the intestine. Only feed RAW, FLAT bones - always under supervision.
Onions and Garlic - can trigger anaemia in dogs.
Sultanas/Grapes - can cause severe kidney issues in dogs and cats.
NO Christmas pudding, cakes or mince pies!
Macadamia nuts - taste lovely but are very dangerous.
TOYS - some toys can be torn up and swallowed.

01/12/2021

Booming pet ownership during the pandemic has prompted a MDR pre-Christmas warning for people to understand the costs of buying or adopting a new family friend.
Pet prices and upkeep costs keep climbing and pets should never be given as a surprise gift.
Dog owners spend an average $3200 a year on food, veterinary services and healthcare products.
Adoption fees usually cover microchipping, desexing, vaccinations, tick and flea treatment and other healthcare the dog will have received in the shelter.
New owners should have given a lot of thought about being ready to welcome a new pet into their lives, including the upfront and ongoing costs, their lifestyle and living situation and the kind of pet most suited to their family.
If you rent your home, you should ensure you have written permission from the real estate agent (or owner) to keep the pet before you adopt or buy.

We cannot emphasise enough how important it is to keep your pets safe during tick season. TICKS KILL!! the cost of keeping your pets safe far outweighs the expense of having your dog or cat on a drip at the vet clinic with no guarantee that your pet will survive.

It is also very important that your pet wears a collar with phone numbers and animal's name on it. Pease also ensure your pets' microchip number is registered and your personal details are current.

21/09/2021

It is important that your animals are fully vaccinated at this time of year. Tick season is ramping up and Kennel Cough is running rampant here in Port Macquarie. Dogs must be protected from heartworm (yearly SR12 Proheart injection works best), be dosed every 3 months for intestinal worms, plus C3/C5 vaccinations (when due) for distemper, hepatitis and parvovirus. Most veterinary clinics send their clients vaccination reminder notices, but if any doubt it is best to check in with your vet.

Our beautiful German shepherd Laika is still looking for her permanent home. 4 years old, de-sexed, fully vaccinated. Some separation anxiety issues so she needs a home where there is someone home most of the time. She needs to be included in the family, not locked out in the yard. Would be happy with another dog her size, but definitely no small dogs or cats. Must have secure high fencing (preferably colourbond) because if she gets out of her yard, she will take off, Adoption fee applies. For more info, please email [email protected].
