🌼🐾Springtime Alert: Skin Allergies and Ear Infections in Dogs🐾🌼

As we welcome spring and summer, many dog owners may notice their furry friends experiencing skin allergies and ear infections more frequently. Understanding the connection between seasonal allergens and these common health issues is vital for keeping our pets happy and healthy

🌱 What Causes Skin Allergies?
In spring and summer, our environment is filled with pollen from blooming flowers, grasses, and trees. These allergens can trigger reactions in sensitive dogs, leading to itchy, inflamed skin. Common signs of skin allergies include excessive scratching, biting or licking at the skin, redness, and rashes.

Additionally, skin allergies can often lead to ear infections. When dogs scratch at their skin or shake their heads due to itching, bacteria and yeast from their skin can enter the ears, causing infections. Symptoms of ear infections may include shaking of the head, scratching at ears, a foul odor, or discharge.

Preventive Measures:
1. Grooming: Regular bathing and grooming can help reduce allergens and remove them from the coat. Consider hypoallergenic shampoos to soothe irritated skin.

2. Consult Your Vet: if you notice your dog is excessively scratching or has recurring ear infections, consult your veterinarian. They may recommend allergy testing or medications to alleviate symptoms.

3. Limit Exposure: If you have a particularly sensitive pet you should keep your dog indoors during peak pollen times and wipe their paws after walks to reduce pollen exposure.

Remember, early detection and preventative treatment are key, monitor your pet for any changes in behavior or skin condition, and seek veterinary advice if needed. Your dog deserves to enjoy spring and summer free from discomfort!

Holiday treats for your pets? Let’s talk about options!

As the festive season approaches, many pet owners are tempted to treat their furry companions with the cute colourful festive shaped rawhide chews. However, we want to highlight some important concerns regarding these popular dog treats and why they may not be the best choice for your pet’s health.

🧵 How Rawhide Is Made:
Rawhide is typically sourced from the skin of cattle and undergoes a chemical processing journey that involves soaking, bleaching, dying, drying and gluing into pretty shapes, it may seem visually appealing, but this process strips the rawhide of natural nutrients and can leave behind chemicals that can be unhealthy for dogs.

One of the most significant dangers of rawhide is the potential for digestive blockages. When dogs chew and swallow pieces of rawhide that are too large or tough, it can lead to severe intestinal blockages.

These blockages may cause:
- Intense abdominal pain
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy
- Changes in bowel movements

This holiday season, consider providing your pets with safer chew or treat options that are both healthy and digestible, such as:

- Pigs Ears and other natural dried treat products.
- Dental chews
- strong rubber toys
-licki mats/yogi pots
-Fresh carrots
-liver treats
-blocks of ice with treats frozen inside (perfect in the hot weather!)

By opting for these alternatives, you’ll not only keep your furry family member safe but also ensure they enjoy a happy and healthy holiday season. Remember all treats should be given in moderation ❤️🐾

☀️ Protect Your Pets from Heatstroke!☀️

As we head into the warmer seasons and the temperatures rise, it's important to keep a close eye on our furry friends. Heatstroke can be a serious threat to pets during warmer months, and we want you to be informed about how to keep them safe!

🌡️ Signs of Heatstroke in Pets:
- Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
- Drooling, especially with thick saliva
- Increased heart rate
- Weakness or lethargy
- Vomiting or diarrhoea
- Unsteady on their feet or inability to stand
- Unconsciousness in severe cases

🩺 What to Do if You Suspect Heatstroke:

1. Move to a Cooler Area: Get your pet indoors or into the shade as quickly as possible.

2. Cool Them Down: Offer cool (not cold) water, cooling mats, a paddle pool of water, bring them into an air conditioned space or allow them to lay on the cool tiles/floor.

It’s important that you don’t cover your pets in wet towels or blankets as these do not allow for air flow and therefore can trap heat and exacerbate the problem.

3.Visit the Vet: Even if your pet seems to recover, it’s essential to consult your veterinarian for further evaluation and treatment.

💧 Prevention tips:
- Always have plenty of fresh water available for your pets.
- Avoid walks or vigorous play during the hottest parts of the day.
- Provide shaded areas for outdoor pets and limit their exposure to the sun.
-Sunscreen, a pet friendly sunscreen on pets wont prevent heatstroke but on areas prone to burning it can help prevent the formation of nasty skin cancers just like it does in humans!

Your pets rely on you to keep them safe and comfortable!

Stay safe and cool! 🐾☀️

🐾 Important Update for Pet Owners in South Australia🐾

We want to make sure our community is informed and safe in light of recent developments. Parvovirus has been confirmed in South Australia in particular Adelaide regions such as Andrew’s farm, Elizabeth Grove, Elizabeth South and Seaton. We are taking necessary precautions to protect all our patients and their furry friends.

📍 If your dog is showing clinical signs of parvovirus, please be understanding with our staff and remain in your vehicle when you arrive at our clinic. Give us a call and our team will come to assist you in your vehicle and may recommend a parvo test before proceeding.

⚠️ Unfortunately, we are unable to isolate parvo patients at our clinic. If a positive diagnosis is confirmed, we will refer you on to a clinic that can safely manage your pet’s care!

💉If your dog is not yet up to date on their C5 vaccination or is to young or unable to recieve the vaccination for other health reasons we recommend for their safety and that of others that you do not take them into public spaces until they are fully vaccinated to prevent them contracting or spreading Parvovirus.

The health and safety of your pets, along with our own, is our top priority. Thank you for understanding and respecting these protocols as we work together to keep our furry families safe!

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our team on 88537273 Stay safe, and give your pets some extra love today!
