With the weather getting hotter earlier l, ticks are coming out early and in larger numbers then other years. Please examine your dogs regularly and keep them on a strict tick and flea treatment (recommend Nexguard spectra). Symptoms can be lethargic, itchy, not eating, coughing/ dry reaching, loss of movement in tail or rear end, rapid breathing.

Congratulations to George and his mum Jackie for graduating our puppy preschool class. George is a very energetic sh*tzhu x puppy and have learnt so much in the past 4 weeks. Jackie has put in a lot of effort and it has shown through her ability to now recall George off objects that she doesn’t want him to have as well as being able to do basic skills like sit, down, mat and loose leash walks. George is a very intelligent little man and I believe with the guidance of his mum Jackie he is going to be a great little pup. Congratulations to you both, you deserve it.

As it’s getting into the hotter months of the year please remember to keep a close eye on your pets and make sure they have fresh water and lots of shade. Those dogs that are obese, old or short nosed like pugs are more prone to over heating issues. There are steps you can take to help your dogs through these hot periods for example only walking in the cooler evenings or early mornings as well as having appropriate cooling devices if being crated or left inside where there’s not much air flow. Please remember to never leave your pet in a vehicle during these condition as even a short period can be fatal.

Tip Tuesday: Don't free feed your dog (don't let your dog snack on their food whenever they like) if you want to use food in training.

It actually isn't healthy for dogs to snack during the day, they are designed to have 1-2 larger meals a day and eat in one sitting (except for puppies or dogs with specific medical issues).

From a training point of view though, having a bowl full of food out for your dog and then trying to get them to work for food in training isn't always very effective. It is like if you had a money tree in your living room and your boss asked you to go into work and do a job that you didn't feel like doing in that moment. The pay cheque isn't going to excite you because you have all the money that you need.

Dogs are the same. Why work for treats when they can just walk to their bowl and snack when they are hungry?

If you are trying to use food in training, stop free feeding your dog and change them to set meals where you offer their food for 10 minutes and what isn't eaten is picked up. Your dog will eat if they are hungry.

Even better is to feed your dog their food through training sessions and puzzle/enrichment toys for additional mental stimulation.

Over the next couple of days please keep an eye on your dogs, if possible keep them inside in the cool. Those who are puppies, elderly or have health issues like obesity are at more of a risk. Stay safe and have a good weekend.
