Over a quarter of Australia's butterflies use native grasses as their host-plants – and at least 26 species use 'Tussock Grasses'.

Tussock Grasses (Poa species) are a large group of native 'clumping' grasses that come in different sizes and shades of green. Some species support only a single butterfly – whilst others are used by many. Two of the most used are 'Slender Tussock Grass' and 'Large Tussock Grass'.

Few native grasslands remain and even these are hanging-on in remnant patches. Can you help bring them back? They make great additions to gardens, verges, habitat corridors, parklands, regeneration projects...

Last night Dr Vanessa, Nurse Emily and Nurse Sharron attended the official 2024 Parrot Trust of Australia Conservation Dinner and Fund-Raiser Auction as apart of this weekends International Parrots 2024 Convention. A fantastic and fascinating evening with guest speaker Dr Neiva Guedes (President of the Hyacinth Macaw Institute/Coordinator of the Hyacinth Macaw Project and Urben Bird Project- Macaws In The City Brazil) and MC Stephanie Tisdell. Dr Neiva gave an insightful presentation on the important role this beautiful species has on its environment and the amazing work the project has achieved with preservation of Hyacinth Macaws in the wild. Thank you to the Parrot Society of Australia Inc. for hosting this wonderful event, we are very excited to be apart of this weekends convention!

To all our valued clients

Please find attached our clinic advice during the current highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza outbreak in Australia. We are fortunate in Qld to have some planning time before the virus is seen in outbreak proportions as has already been the case in ACT, VIC and NSW. Outdoor birds are at risk of contracting the virus from wild birds in the form of inhaled feather dust and ingestion of faecal, reproductive or oral secretions. We have included some precautions you may wish to put in place to minimise your bird(s) exposure to Avian Influenza.

If your bird lives outside and is required to visit the clinic for an appointment we will conduct the consultation in full personal protective gear and in an isolation space (contained, but separate to the clinic). We have taken these measures on advice from the Department of Primary Industries and The Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists, in response to the current situation in our southern neighbour states.

Sincerely
Dr Vanessa Harkess and The Exotics Vet Team

Rosie and Bobby the Eclectus Parrots visited Dr Vanessa for a comprehensive health check and microchip implant. 🦜

Did you know that Eclectus Parrots are one of a few parrots with a trait called sexual dimorphism? Meaning that the males and the females can easily be differentiated between by their colouring!

Can you guess who the female Rosie is and who the male Bobby is?

💚 🦜[Blog post] - Wrong Turns on the Path to Parrot Bonding: A Guide to Getting it Right! ➡️➡️➡️

"Throughout the years, breeders and handraisers have developed various methods to help birds adjust to their new environments and bond with their caregivers and families. While some techniques are effective, others may not yield the desired results and could have a negative impact on a bird's well-being and our relationship with them in the future. In this guide, we will discuss these methods, explaining why they are ineffective or inappropriate, and offer alternative approaches to ensure you establish a lasting relationship built on trust and respect with your parrot."

In this article, our Behaviour Consultant, Jasmine, delves into the murky waters of the advice surrounding bonding with our companion parrots and helps to breakdown some of the common recommendations providing simple advice on the do's and don'ts!

❓Why is the Size of Treats You Offer Your Bird Important❓

🥜Offering appropriately sized treats for your birds is crucial because it ensures your bird can consume the treats quickly, allowing for more repetitions of the behaviour and more frequent reinforcement during training. This helps build strong desired behaviours without the risk of overfeeding.

Additionally, using appropriately sized treats helps maintain a balanced diet and prevents your bird from filling up on treat foods instead of their regular food.🥦

📏The guide below demonstrates the appropriate size treats for extra small to large birds, using a pine nut as a size reference. It's important to choose treats that your bird finds reinforcing to ensure effective training.

We appreciate any donations but are specifically in need of smaller items such tea towels, hand towels, toggle mats and bathmats that have no holes or lose strings that our patients may get caught in.

Donations can be dropped off to the clinic at 22 Ashmole Road Redcliffe.
