Please be careful with all your animals tonight - and consider fireworks if you were planning them.
Unfortunately, many animals are terrified by firework displays, and these can indirectly pose risks to animal safety by causing them to take flight and try to escape the loud noises. Dogs and horses in particular often try to run away when frightened by fireworks, and may injure themselves. Many of these animals can end up several kilometres from home. Dogs have been known to jump through plate glass windows to escape loud noises, and easily jump over, or dig their way under fences that would normally contain them.
You should prepare your dog by:
1. Take your dog out for exercise before the fireworks start e.g. a reasonably long walk, then after a couple of hours you can feed them a meal. A tired and well-fed dog may be less anxious during the night. If you can, stay home to be with your pet.
2. Let your dog be with you, remain calm and perform your normal activities. Avoid fussing over your pet excessively as this may encourage anxious behaviour. Try to engage them in normal activities such as playing. Reward your dog for their calm behaviour, rewards include giving treats and their favourite toy.
3. Keep your dog indoors if possible, close the blinds/curtains to and create a comfortable hiding place. An example of a hiding place can be a cardboard box (crate if your dog is crate trained) with blankets inside. Cover the box with another blanket and put on some soft music or the TV to help mask the noise outside.
4. Distract your dog with games and food. Do not force these on your dog if they want to hide instead.
5. Do not punish your dog if they show signs of fear and distress.
6. Dogs who panic can choke themselves on a collar or lead, so never tie up your dog during these times and never use a choke chain to restrain your dog.
7. Make sure your dog is microchipped and that your contact details are up to date on the microchip register. Also ensure they are wearing an ID tag with your up to date contact details, so they can be easily returned if they do escape.
8. Direct supervision is important to help prevent injury or escape. If you cannot supervise your dog on the night consider making alternative arrangements so your dog will be supervised by a responsible person your dog knows.

At the Gisborne Veterinary Clinic, we embrace a calm approach when caring for our patients.
Calm handling promotes considerate, gentle handling techniques in a calm environment. This leads to a reduction in pet anxiety, fear and stress, and an experience that is rewarding and safer for pets, owners and staff.
For some pets, pre appointment medication is required to further reduce anxiety levels.
This, together with calm gentle handling ensures our patients have the best experience possible when visiting the clinic.

Contact us to discuss ways to tailor a calm visit for your pet.

General tips to reduce stress prior to arrival:

- Cats love quiet and cleanliness so have cats in a secure clean carrier with a familiar blanket that smells like home. Leave the carrier out a few days before the appointment. Cover the carrier with a towel for travel and arrival and keep the carriers off the floor at the clinic. Put the carrier on the seat next to you or hold the carrier on your lap securely.

- Dogs that are anxious may benefit from waiting in the car with you when you arrive, rather than in the waiting room. Ask reception when making your booking if this would be helpful for your pet.
- Dogs that are anxious at the clinic can be trained with short frequent social visits, with lots of rewards to help them create a positive association. Feel free to simply drop in with your dog any time you are going past. A weigh on the scales (treats available) or just a walk into reception and out. You don't need a consult to pop in for a social visit to help your dog become comfortable with the smells and noises of the clinic.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
