Could Bandit be the thief of your heart? This handsome man has plenty of appeal. “Bandit loves water!” staff exclaim. “He would love a beach or water-based lifestyle. He even loves to play with his water bowl!” As a working dog breed, Bandit will need plenty of exercise and mental enrichment for his agile body and equally agile mind.

🎉 Celebrating 75 years of caring for Tasmanian dogs 🐾 Today marks something truly special for Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania, 75 years since a remarkable woman changed the future for hundreds of thousands of dogs across our state.

In 1950, English-born Gladys Rawson arrived in Tasmania and was confronted by something she simply couldn’t ignore: the number of stray, neglected and unwanted dogs roaming our towns and rural communities. Many being injured on our roads.

She saw dogs who had no one — and she decided to become someone.

Inspired by the National Canine Defence League in the UK, Miss Rawson gathered supporters, rallied councils, and fought through setback after setback.

On 15 November 1950, the organisation that would become Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania was officially founded — the moment Tasmania’s dogs finally had a champion dedicated solely to their welfare.

From those humble early days — mixing concrete by hand, turning old Austin car parts into makeshift kennels, and borrowing tiny pockets of land — grew a statewide network of Homes in Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie. All built for one purpose: to be a safe place for every dog who needed one.

Today, 75 years later, Miss Rawson’s vision lives on in every wagging tail, every reunion, every adoption, every life saved.

Her legacy stretches across generations — hundreds of thousands of Tasmanian dogs who have been cared for, protected and given a second chance.

To all who have supported us — volunteers, donors, staff, councils, adopters and advocates — thank you for helping us continue what Gladys started.

Tasmania’s dogs are safer, loved and protected because of you.

Here’s to 75 years… and to many more ahead, with countless more paws finding safety and love. 💙🐾

“I cannot be sure what’s going on in Misty’s mind, but I can say she just wants to breathe the same oxygen as you and lick your face,” her foster carer jokes. There are worse things to cope with in life. And doesn’t Misty look happy? That might be because she doesn’t know that the dreaded D-word lurks in her future. Yes, this slightly mountainous woman needs to go on a diet so she can live a long, happy and healthy life with her new family.

Oscar’s no grouch! In fact, we can safely say he’s sweeter than Mr Snuffleupagus. He’s a Bulldog-Staffy x who is showing signs of toilet training and seems crate trained as well. He’s also learned how to use a doggy door and will sit for cheese. This guy is some kind of canine child prodigy! He’s also gotten on brilliantly with his foster care "sibling".

The classic ’80s hit "I Ran", by A Flock of Seagulls, refers to meeting a girl with auburn hair and tawny eyes. Our Tawny has neither but in our view she’s a chart topper anyway. She’s a German Shorthaired Pointer-Huntaway x who has been in foster care in a rural setting with other dogs, cats, chickens and even a horse. “Tawny has been enjoying exploring the property, and enjoying dog play and human interaction,” staff say.

Nero may have fiddled while Rome burned, but our Nera isn’t fiddling around: she’s deadly serious when it comes to finding a new home. She came to us as a stray, so her history is a mystery, but we think she’s a Spaniel-Kelpie x. She’s been in foster care where she was a very good girl. “Nera is an energetic dog who always enjoys a play and cuddle,” staff say.

Considering this Tassie spring has been spectacularly underwhelming — apart from the overwhelming howling gales — Storm could be a fitting name for this pretty girl. We suspect she could calm the stormiest of hearts. She’s a Rottweiler-Poodle-Labrador x who needs to go to a home with another dog for confidence building. "She loves being around people and looks to them for reassurance," staff say.

🐾 A big win for Tassie renters — and their pets! Tasmanian renters will soon have the right to keep their beloved pets at home, thanks to landmark tenancy reforms that end blanket “no pets” policies.

Just like any other member of a household — child, adult, or pet — tenants share a responsibility to care for and respect their home. This reform doesn’t change that; it simply recognises pets as part of the family who belong in a home, not excluded from one.

We know how much pets matter. They offer companionship, comfort, and joy. Especially in times of stress and loneliness. For older Tasmanians, they bring purpose and routine; for children, they teach empathy and responsibility; and for people living alone, they provide connection and love. Every Tasmanian, regardless of age, income, or housing status, should have the chance to experience the unconditional companionship of a pet.
