Here’s Disney, just waiting to find his princess, or his prince, or an entire family of animated royalty. See more of this regal man in the comments.

Disney was a stray, so we don’t have any background information on him. We think he’s a German Shepherd x about 18 months old. He weighs 29.5kg.

“Staff have noticed Disney can be a bit strong on a lead when walking, so a harness and training would benefit for owners when going for a walk,” staff say. “They also said he can tilt his head when staff have a conversation with him, like he is listening to us.”

Disney would make a good candidate for a beginner obedience training class, which would also provide a great opportunity to bond with his new human(s).

The year 2024 may well be the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese lunar calendar, but here at the Dogs’ Homes it might as well have been the Year of the Puppies. And it’s nowhere near over yet.

These three are Staffy-Bull Mastiff x pups born on 16 June. Jordan is the only girl. They weigh between 5-6kg now, but their Bull Mastiff side means they should grow up to be good-sized adults.

As ever, we highly recommend puppy preschool for all our pups. It’s a great way for your pup and you to get some quality bonding time together while learning the obedience basics, and getting the positive socialisation experiences that are so vital to a dog’s development.

If your local vet centre has puppy classes, it also means they will associate going to the vet with good times and happy memories, so you may well get dragged through the door by your dog on visits, rather than it being the other way around.

🌈 A decade is a long time in anyone’s life, and close to a lifetime for our beloved dogs. Sara writes to us about her decade with Alfie, and a love that will last forever:

“Ten years ago we adopted Bob, a fawn and white Whippet, from the Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania,” she writes.

“Volunteer and foster carer ‘Helping’ Hans had helped my dog Lacey meet an array of suitable friends for her. And all of them were wonderful, but Lacey showed no interest in them. Just as we were leaving, out came Maryanne with Bob, the most striking Whippet I had ever seen.

“We popped him in the play yard and they bounced around having loads of fun. We then went to a private stall and he wrapped himself over my lap and cuddled in tight, chewing on my button. I knew I had found the most amazing dog.

“We went down to the office to sign the paperwork and quickly adopted him. The staff asked us if we would be keeping the name Bob. I laughed and said, ‘what a strange name for a Whippet’. We renamed him Alfie. Later we would realise just how much the name suited him, as he would have many Bob moments.

“Alfie spent years keeping Myer in business by chewing my sheets. He also travelled Australia and spent a lot of time in both Cairns and Sydney. He even got to travel in his own private jet!

“He was there for the bad and the worst, being the best company a Whippy could be through major health concerns, never leaving my side. He was also there for the best of times. Alfie was so excited to be part of my wedding that he peed on my dress.

“He was incredibly beautiful when both of our children came along, always gentle and loving. There was nowhere you could go without Alf being there and promptly hugging you, or circling to sit at your side then flopping his head on your lap. Alf made life so darn special.

“We lost our dear boy recently. We had 10 beautiful years. I wanted to let everyone at the Dogs’ Homes know what an amazing boy he was and that we are so very grateful he was brought into our lives. Every day was filled with hugs and he will be missed for eternity.

“Thanks for all that you do. Being adopted by these dogs makes life so full and makes us so loved.”

— Thank you, Sara, for your moving words. Alfie remains part of the Dogs’ Homes Family forever. He’s just moved to our Rainbow Bridge Chapter where he has plenty of new fur siblings. ❤

🔊 Online expressions of interest have opened 🐾

Jenny has come off her rural Block and into our arms after breaking up with Ben Affleck AGAIN! She’s been recovering from this heartbreak in foster care. See more of her in the comments.

She’s a Great Dane-Bull Mastiff x who will be a year old on 21 September. Jenny is such a big girl she was too long to properly fit on our scales, so all we can say is that she weighs at least 52kg and probably quite a bit more. Her photos are a bit deceiving when it comes to her size.

We’re told she knows sit and stay and mostly comes when called. She was previously an outside dog who has been picking up her toilet training quite well in foster care. “She’s a lovely dog who just wants to be around you and near you,” her carer says.

Jenny rarely spent any time off the rural property she grew up on. “She has had limited socialisation but is willing to learn and take things in,” our foster care co-ordinator said. “Jenny has come such a long way with us, from not walking on lead to loving a walk and checking all the good smells out. She will need an owner who is willing to be patient with her and go at her pace. She won’t suit a home with younger kids. She has a great sit and loves her treats, which might be the way to her heart.”

She happily lived with other enormous dogs in her past life so she might like a gigantic friend in her new home.

What a wonderful multi-coloured spotty coat Lumis has! And her eyes seem to look deep into your soul.

She’s a Staffy x who is about 16 months old and weights 19.5kg. We’re told she hasn’t had any training, including toilet training, but staff note she hasn’t soiled her bedding since she’s been in our care. A beginner training class would be ideal for her.

“Lumis is a little camera shy so it is hard to capture her good side,” staff say. Hey, you did all right! “She loves cuddles and support from her humans. She hasn't had a lot of experience of the world so takes some time to get used to new things.

“She loves treats and talking to her people. She hasn't met many dogs but seems to be more comfortable around smaller or calm dogs.”

As mentioned, Lumis hasn’t had much in the way of life experience. She will need a family who understand that slow and steady wins the doggy care race. Tender loving care combined with time and patience, and gentle introductions to new sights, smells and sounds, will be just the ticket.

If your internet connection has suddenly slowed to a crawl, we have the answer: Leo has broken it. He’s the most gloriously magnificent creature on the entire planet, and you can see more of him in the comments.

Channelling both the Ewoks of Endor and the fishy star of Jaws, he’s a Pug-Shih Tzu x who was born in February and weighs 6kg. We’re told he knows stay and is toilet trained. He’s been spending time in foster care where he’s only had one “accident”. He’s an excitable young lad who, like many small dogs, wants to jump up to say hi, and his carer has been working on that.

“Leo is going well,” they say. “He’s so eager to please so I’m hoping that he soon learns not to jump up. He seems to only jump when excited or entering a room.” He’s been sharing his space with a Great Dane x and has followed Atlas’s lead on the household routine.

“He really loves soft toys and he sleeps through the night in a crate with the door open. He’s been my little shadow, making sure he’s following right under my feet!”

Leo will need ongoing training and socialisation with people and other dogs. A beginner class would be ideal for him. We would recommend Leo go to a home with children aged at least 14 years old as he hasn’t had a lot of experience with kids.

Well, aren’t these quite the cutesy trio? They also come in colours to suit almost every decor.

Cappy, Stark and Austin are Staffy x boys who are about eight weeks old. They weigh between 5-6kg now but at their age they are growing every day.

We highly recommend puppy preschool to anyone who adopts a pup from us. It’s a great way for your dog (and you!) learn the “boot camp basics” of obedience training in a fun, controlled environment. It also provides lots of positive socialisation experiences that are so vital to a pup’s development. Talk about a two-pronged attack!

Additionally, if your preferred vet centre offers puppy classes, your dog will be inclined to view the destination as a happy one, resulting in much less moaning, groaning and gnashing of teeth come check-up day.

Sweet Alfie has been spending most of his time in foster care lately. Shelter living has proven tutu much for him, so he’s done a Billy Elliott and decided to devote himself to dance.

Well, we may be overstretching the truth there. But who could blame us for getting gimmicky, since Alfie’s been with us for almost half his life?

And although he’s much happier in foster care than at our Hobart Home, what he really needs is a forever family to take this good-natured, fun-loving fellow into their hearts and hearth.

Alfie is a Border Collie-Kelpie-Smithfield x who weighs 27kg and was a year old in May. He’s spent time with three different foster carers, and as a result the list of things he knows obedience-wise includes sit, drop, stay and shake. He’s also toilet trained.

He mostly comes when called but can be distracted by other dogs and wildlife, so there’s more work to be done there, although his concentration is improving all the time thanks to the dedication of our foster carers.

“He’s a very sweet and happy dog. He loves looking over the window and nope, he does not jump!” carer Eva says. “Alfie spent time socialising with other dogs, going for long bushwalks and working on his training.

“He behaves really well when playing with other dogs — he needs to keep socialising with other dogs. He sometimes does a typical herding behaviour and some other times he is very submissive. He is becoming very good at reading other dogs’ behaviour. I am so proud of him!”

Alfie’s adoption price is $430. Every dog is desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, treated for fleas and worms, and has had a standard health check. Each dog has also been behaviourally assessed.

If you are interested in meeting Alfie, please use the link below to submit an expression of interest. Please include as much detail as you can about the life you could provide for a new dog. Staff from our Hobart Home will contact those suitable to chat and arrange an appointment.

**Update: Perdita has been adopted on 6.09.24**

Perdita may be named after the heroine of 101 Dalmatians, but she’s giving off deep Flying Nun vibes with those ears. See more of her, and her ears, in the comments.

She’s a Beagle x who will be four months tomorrow (4 September)! Hip-hip, hooray! She weighs just 6kg right now but still has plenty of growth ahead of her.

“Perdita is a really sweet girl,” staff say. She’s been spending some time in foster care where it was noted she had experience with other dogs, cats, older children, and even a horse! Of course.

As we say with all puppies, Perdita is the perfect age to start her obedience journey. Puppy preschool is a great way to set her on that path, and to continue the socialisation experiences she’s had in care.

And if your local vet does puppy classes, your dog will thing it’s the most fun place ever, and drag you through the door on vaccination day rather than it being the other way around.

🔊 Sweetheart Stella is back with us as her adoption didn't work out. We're sure her forever people are out there somewhere! 🐾

Hearing the name Stella always makes the adoptions reporter think of Ned Flanders ripping off his shirt in The Simpsons’ musical version of A Streetcar Named Desire. “Stelllllaaaaa!” See more of her in the comments.

We are sadly lacking in information about Stella, which is why we’re rabbiting on about ancient TV episodes. We think she’s a Bulldog-Staffy x about four years old. She weighs 24kg. She knows sit but we’re not sure where she is with other obedience training.

“Stella loves a belly rub,” staff say. “She is very sweet and cuddly, and has a beautiful smile.” She does indeed!

Since we’re not sure about Stella’s training levels, we’d recommend a beginner obedience class. It’s a great way to bond with your new family member in a fun and positive environment.

George, George, George of the jungle, strong as he can be … and here’s your complementary earworm for the day. Watch out for that tree! See more of him in the comments.

Our George is a Kelpie-Beagle-German Shepherd x who weighs 28kg and was one year old in July. We’re told he knows sit and stay, comes when called, and is toilet trained. He’s used to sleeping in a crate inside.

“This young boy is looking for a home where he can enjoy some fun and continue with his training, as can get excited as all young teenagers can,” staff say.

With his high energy levels, George would be better suited to a home with older children until he gets some training on board. He hasn’t had much to do with other dogs.

Here’s Red, ably fulfilling the role of Aussie icon. Isn’t he a looker? See more of this handsome lad in the comments.

He’s a Kelpie who weighs 28kg and was four years old in March. We’re told he knows sit but his recall is not great and he’s not toilet trained, so he’ll need work there.

“Red would suit an ‘Aussie lifestyle’ on the land where he can live his working dog dreams and maybe have another Kelpie mate,” staff say.

He’s been a working sheepdog in his time and loves rounding them up. If there are sheep at his new home he will need work on his recall. A beginner training class might be needed.

As a working dog, Red will need plenty of exercise and stimulation for his agile mind and body.

UPDATE: Tilly has been Adopted 1.9.24 💜🐾

Since we’re a family friendly page, what the adoptions reporter exclaimed at the sight of Tilly must forever remain a secret. See more of her magnificent gloriousness in the comments.

She’s a Chihuahua who weighs 5kg and was 14 years old in June. We don’t have much more information on this stunning older lady.

“Tilly is a very special girl who is looking for a lap to curl up on,” staff said. “Due to her age, we think a quiet retirement home without kids to annoy her is best.

“Her beautiful hair will need regular grooming. She has had multiple teeth removed while she’s been with us,” staff added. That explains her slightly lopsided face — she’s still getting used to the shape of her new mouth, and her hearing isn’t what it once was. “Tilly is still happy to have a trot around but is past the stage of runs and hikes.”

Pippy is one heck of a good-lookin’ boy. See video of him doing a lovely sit in the comments.

We don’t know a lot about Pippy, including where he is with his training (apart from his sit). He’s a Staffy x who weighs 23.5kg and is about two or three years old.

“This lovable dog may start off a bit nervous and shy, but with patience and positive reinforcement, he blossoms into the most loyal and affectionate friend,” staff say.

“Pippy is a sensitive boy who takes his time to warm up to new people and environments. His behaviour can sometimes be a little conflicted due to his minimal exposure to new surroundings and people in the past. However, with each passing day, Pippy is making great progress, slowly gaining confidence and learning to trust.” Pip-pip hooray!

UPDATE: Opal has been adopted 31/08/2024 🐾❤

The name bestowed on this stray girl at our Hobart Home is quite fitting: “Opal would do well in a house in Coober Pedy,” was the joke. She certainly is a pinker shade of pale.

We think Opal is a Bull Terrier x about six months old. She weighs 13kg.
Although we know next to nothing about Opal, we can say with certainty that she is cute as a button!

Another thing we know for sure: Opal is deaf. We would recommend prospective owners do their research into deaf dogs, who can be trained using hand signals.

Due to her colouring, she needs to be kept out of the sun during peak UV hours (therefore the Coober Pedy joke). She will need to wear dog-friendly, zinc-free sunscreen outside.

🐾 Precious young girl
🐾 Deafness no barrier
🐾 Cute as a button
🐾 Mysterious past
🐾 Sunscreen a must

Every dog is desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, treated for fleas and worms, and has had a standard health check. Each dog has also been behaviourally assessed.

To visit the dogs at our Hobart Home, please click on the link below to schedule an appointment. Appointments allow us to regulate the number of people in the adoption area, minimising stress for the dogs. Kindly be aware that as dogs are adopted throughout the day, we cannot guarantee the presence of a specific dog during your visit. Additionally, it is mandatory for all family members, including other dogs, to participate in a meet and greet with the dog prior to adoption. If you plan to adopt on the day of your visit, please bring everyone along and mention it in your booking.
