I saw this article today, and it follows up from my recent posts about stress signals shown by our dogs.
No one wants their dog to feel worried, and it can be confronting to realise your dog is stressed - I've been
there and it was really confronting for me when I recognised my dog was worried about certain things.
And it made me stressed as well.

If this is your experience and you need help, don't be a stranger... reach out.

Some dogs are more susceptible to stress. When dogs feel anxious, their bodies release excess norepinephrine, the fight or flight hormone. This flood of norepinephrine can result in physical symptoms. The more you know the triggers, the better you can eliminate stressors.

Separation Anxiety Dog Guardians Wanted!
My daily work is helping my clients teach their dogs that being left alone is safe. I am blown away by the dedication and determination, the care and love that my clients give their dogs. After doing this work for eight years, I know that owning a “separation-doggy” can be a lonely place, and the journey to success can be an emotional roller-coaster. When I started out, I was devastated to learn that people felt guilty or embarrassed that their dog had separation struggles.

Supporting my clients is vital ... if I can support my clients through the training process, then I can help more dogs get better.

I have studied with international experts to learn how to resolve separation struggles for dogs. I am doing research for my own purposes and want to talk people and delve deeper into their experience with their separation-anxiety dog.

If you are the guardian of a dog with separation struggles, I’d love to interview you for 10-15 mins for my research purposes only.

PM me. It will take 10-15mins on the phone.

LIP LICKING - are they anticipating a piece of roast chicken? Or are they worried because you are getting ready to leave?
Next time do something your dog doesn't like, watch carefully & if they flick out their tongue they're likely telling you they're worried.

Panting can be confusing because your dog may pant from excitement or after a fun play session - both positive experiences. But they might also pant when worried at the vet.
This dog also has a stiff body posture and is staring ahead, which when paired with panting indicates they are uncomfortable.

STRESS SIGNALS #1. PANTING

Panting after a play or when it's hot, is how our dogs cool themselves off.

But if our dog starts to pant even though it isn't hot, they haven't just finished a big play session or been for a long walk it is likely a stress response.
Worry or stress can occur for lots of different reasons, separation struggle, worried about another dog or a person, the list is long...
Panting is often accompanied by other signs such as pacing, yawning, salivation or drooling.

If your dog starts to pant while you're getting ready to leave, they are likely showing an early sign of worry about being left alone. Look at your dog, are there other stress signs such as pacing or vocalising? Does it happen regularly?

To understand as best we can, we need to look at everything going on for our dog in any given circumstance. Panting after a play at the park is how they cool off.

Panting that escalates into other stress responses, needs to be addressed. If you notice these responses GIVE YOURSELF A HUGE PAT ON THE BACK, because that is STEP 1 on the path to calmer life for you & your dog.

If you're not sure, you want to learn more, ask...

Changes in the home - moving, people leaving/arriving, holidays - can be challenging for our dogs. And sometimes these changes can trigger Separation Struggles for our dogs.

Helping our dogs learn to be calm, to settle, in the new place so that they get lots of rest is super important. Sleep allows our dogs to think better!

I'm Jenny and join along as I help my dogs Macy & Tansy with new environments. First up, boundary training for lots of deep rest.

If your dog needs help to settle with new stimulation, pop a comment below or send a messgae to learn more.

PUPPY HOME ALONE - FROM STRUGGLE TO SOLUTION

I was contacted by a very upset puppy parent because their gorgeous 10wk old Cavoodle howled & screamed anytime my client moved out of sight. If she had a shower, the puppy screamed the house down. Getting out of the house was not even attempted!

This is so distressing on so many levels - for the puppy (obviously), for the human (definitely), and for the neighbours who are getting antsy listening to this racket.

SOLUTION: Build puppy's confidence & independence, set appropriate departure training exercises, have regular check in with the client to support both of them through this tricky process.
HERE IS THEIR GOOGLE REVIEW.

Tomorrow at 4pm, please join myself and LickiMat Expert Trainer Colleen O'Dea to hear our live discussion. I will be talking about how a LickiMat can help build independence in our pups and adult dogs.

This is different from the normal strategy of "give enrichment to your dog then leave the house."
And the wonderful Colleen will be answering FAQs/comments I hear from my clients. So tune in at 4pm Thursday!

Here's a video of Tansy at the vet this morning enjoying her LM...just to get your attention! 😘

Teaching a pup that "it's OK to be alone" starts while they are still with the litter. I am a huge fan of Puppy Culture, where the amazing Jane Messineo Lindquist shares amazing information for dog breeders and puppy owners. Her latest blog post, how independence training can/should be introduced before the puppy goes to it's forever home, is below. Love it! 🥰🐶

I would like to wish everyone and their dog a very happy new year. And to acknowledge all the great training, the persistence, patience & progress I have been lucky enough to witness with my clients over the last year. It's so important to recognise when we have done something we set out to do, something we wanted to create. Yeah!

Personally I have: been jogging regularly 5kms (and feel so much better for it)🏃‍♀️🙂. I started to show Tansy in conformation shows and we even placed a few times - all this was very new to me. 🐶👏. Macy & I are working on scent training which she loves.

And in my business I have a new Puppy Home Alone program designed to help puppies that find this difficult, to break the steps down so they learn it's OK to be alone early on. 🐶🥰.

Take a moment to think about all the great things you've done this year before you immediately start planning for 2023. Because you're all awesome.

See you in 2023. 🥂💓🎉🎊

I'm very excited to have completed an interview about Separation Anxiety in dogs and the myths surrounding it, with Lissa Christopher at SMH! (Myth # 1 is "there's nothing you can do". The truth is: dogs can & do get better!)
It will be published mid-January. It's great that this devastating condition is getting some prominence - it's far more common than you might realise. Stay tuned & I will let you know when it's published. 🙂👏
As always a big shout out to my wonderful clients who do the work. 😍
